I'm pleased for you Andy, long may you have positive results.

  • ๐Ÿง€๐Ÿ˜‰x

  • Loved this podcast ๐Ÿ˜Š I follow Clint religiously, the man is an inspiration. I am very close to giving this programme a trial, however It's the oil that I struggle with. I love pure virgin olive oil. I tried to work without it when preparing my food, and it was not great. Everything seems so dry without it. But I guess I need to weigh up the pain factor - for me I have inflammation in my ankle/feet area, meaning so hard to walk. I shall make a decision after my Rheumo visit this Tuesday ! Stay well stay blessed all.

  • Oh, Hessie5, yes, . . . ๐Ÿ‘

    No worries . . .

I, too, once loved my olive oil โ€” the more 'virginal' the better . . . ๐Ÿ˜‚

Oh well, I guess the illusion of it all fell away โ€” as the benefits it was supposed to impart was 'not to be' โ€” at least for me. ๐Ÿ˜ณ ๐Ÿ™ƒ

If this helps at all, if you're not aware of it already, there are ways to cook without oil. [I've been learning ever since parting with the "beloved greasy spoon". ๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿ˜‰ ]

For example, we learned to stir fry with either broth ๐Ÿต or just plain water ๐Ÿ’ง๐Ÿ’ฆ . (And, surprisingly, no dryness or lack of flavour. ๐Ÿ˜ณ ๐Ÿ‘ )

    _____

Dr. Michael Klaper talks about stir frying with seasoned vegetable broth at minute 8:20:

Olive Oil Is Not Healthy - Michael Klaper MD :

    ( doctorklaper.com/videos/oli... )

    .

    .

And, if you're interested in salad dressing (without oil), making it with blenderised veg, fruits, avocado, nuts, etc. is a tasty option.

    Yumm . . . ๐Ÿ˜‹

    .

  • This brief Steam Saute and Cooking Without Oil video gives a quick demo on how to use water in place of oil:

    .

    .

  • Merely supplemental info:

The young lady's reference to Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn's work, may be of interest for those of us dealing with heart/ cardiovascular ๐Ÿ’” issues as well.

Here's reinforcing concepts โ€” straight from Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn himself โ€” as to why some of us (already plagued with illness ๐Ÿ˜ณ ๐Ÿ™ƒ ) may wish to be 'aware of' where oils are concerned:

    .

No Oil -- Not Even Olive Oil! - Caldwell Esselstyn MD:

    .

    .

  • If you're familiar with Dr. John McDougall, he has a few tips on Cooking Without Oil (touching on: browning veg & baking & sautรฉing without oil): drmcdougall.com/misc/2007nl... ๐Ÿ‘

Merely trying each method a time or 2, it becomes 2nd nature โ€” without a thought. Very easy & very tasty. ๐Ÿ˜‹

    .

  • And, of course, Dr. McDougall has a few things to say about oil as well:

  • We're such flexible, malleable creatures that we adapt (our behavioral habits & tastebuds) in no time . . . ๐Ÿ‘

In hindsight โ€” when I/we reflect back after having some distance from it, we have a chuckle & wonder 'what all the fuss was about'โ‰๏ธ ๐Ÿ˜‚

Yet, whilst in 'the midst of it' (in the present moment) it's an 'unpleasantness/ inconvenience' โ€” even a 'struggle' ๐Ÿ˜– โ€” to be overcome. ๐Ÿ‘ (And, the light-hearted, good-natured humour of it all is nowhere to be found. ๐Ÿ˜• )

    .

  • Yes, indeed. Couldn't agree with you more, Hessie5. ๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ‘

We each weigh in balance โš– what makes sense for us in the moment & proceed accordingly. ๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ™

    _____

[Personally, I got kinda used to being able to freely use my 'hands, feet, limbs, mind . . .' over the years. ๐Ÿค— With the cascading failure of each, I kinda missed 'em. ๐Ÿ˜‰ (And, as the accompanying debilitating pain 'lost its charm' โ€” 'something had to give' . . . ๐Ÿ˜ณ ) Far, far easier (for me) to start fiddling with what I put in my mouth โ€” than the never-ending pain, debilitation, & other little bodily 'surprises' that visited (& took up residence) . . . ๐Ÿ˜ณ ๐Ÿ˜ฑ ]

Fully realise it's 'easier said than done' for many of us & how it's a struggle to find an approach that suits each of us.

Such personal decisions, such personal individual experiences . . .

We all 'learn as we go'. We each have such unique journeys & walk away with such unique interpretations, opinions, perspectives from our experiences. ๐Ÿ˜ณ ๐Ÿ™ƒ

    Pretty amazing, dazzling, & baffling . . . ๐Ÿค— ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜ณ

Have no doubt you'll choose what's best for you, Hessie5.

    Wishing you the very best. ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ€ ๐ŸŒบ ๐ŸŒž

  • Hmmm I shall trial go a week ๐Ÿ˜Š

  • I react to olive oil and any oil in fact. It's my Achilles heal. One teaspoon gives me a reaction that lasts a week.

  • I Cook a lot of foods all without oil. I am lucky I can eat tomatoes which are nightshade foods and I cook a mean curry. I add chopped onions to a pan and add a little water. Then I add my mushrooms, variety of beans. Sweet corn, peas, tinned chopped tomatoes and my new favourite soy pieces. Whilst these are cooking away I make my curry sauce out of passatta, mild chilli(teaspoon), 2 tablespoons of med curry powder, touch of cinnamon, ginger and grate a few cloves of garlic. When it's nearly done I add 2or3 tims of new potatoes. It's lovely and no oil in anything.

  • Oh my goodness, glenb, that curry sounds delicious!! ๐Ÿ˜‹

Please, when you make it, would you kindly consider taking a picture ๐Ÿ“ธ of? And, if possible sharing it with us in a post?! ๐Ÿ™

  • I'm really not sure I can be bothered with this given I just deleted a long reply somehow but suffice to say, leaky gut theory has been around for over 25 years and does have some validity in my opinion. Dr Tom O Bryan's research is convincing but why is it nigh on impossible to find an opposing argument anywhere?

Clearly our friend wants/needs the Paddison cult connection, that's his affair. However, bona fide researchers and academics submit their work for peer review and want it cited and to share it with the world to the benefit of all, rather than to make loads of dollars. Others make loads of dollars working with Pharma. I'd like to read a balanced account of leaky gut so I'll go to Google Scholar to see what I can find. One thing I am certain about is that I would find a life of vegetables extremely tedious! Can you go back to all your bad habits once your gut has healed??? Somehow I doubt it.

  • Yes everyone of us make our own decisions concerning our treatment route. There certainly is no proven one and only opimal way to go. So much still to learn about the disease and so many players at work. Success stories are not often easy to hear for those who are suffering and have not found a good enough solution, but for many they may give new hope in trying to takle their illness and hope is always a good thing๐Ÿ˜Š

  • There are a lot of people such as one lady called Ida who has a Facebook page called kitchen fairytale I think and she healed her gut on PP and now eats lots of things I cannot yet or maybe never will. I think it depends on the severity and length of time you have had leaky gut?

  • Thank you kindly, glenb. ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ‘

  • I couldn't agree more. I prefer real evidence though and it takes decades for things to be proven. 30 years ago Omega oils were thought of as a fad. Now we know they're essential for brain health apart from anything else.

  • On, a darker ๐ŸŒš (& paradoxically lighter(?) ๐ŸŒ side as well), Andy raises the serious concern, about falling.

What do we do when we fall ๐Ÿ & are incapable or readily getting back up ๐ŸŒท ?

What if we fall in the road ๐Ÿ›ฃ with an on-coming car ๐Ÿš— & because of mobility difficulties โ™ฟ๏ธ are unable to get out of the way ๐Ÿƒ promptly?

Perhaps having a loving supportive companion ๐Ÿข to lend a hand is a godsend:

"Success stories are not often easy to hear for those who are suffering and have not found a good enough solution, but for many they may give new hope in trying to tackle their illness and hope is always a good thing."

    .

    ______

For those with a spark of hope (& iron-clad determination), dietary/ lifestyle approaches are yet another option to explore.

Blessedly, for some (many?) of us, those explorations are life-changing. ๐Ÿ™ ๐ŸŒบ ๐Ÿ€ ๐ŸŒž

They make the difference between mobility & immobility, thinking & brain fog, relief & pain, willingness to go on & willingness to end it all . . .

  • Now I finally understand why fish oil is not good for you. Ray Peat explains this to the point.

  • ๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ™

๐Ÿ’ก ๐Ÿค” ". . . In the 1940s, some of the toxic effects of fish oil (such as testicular degeneration, softening of the brain, muscle damage, and spontaneous cancer) were found to result from an induced vitamin E deficiency. Unfortunately, there isn't much reason to think that just supplementing vitamin E will provide general protection against the unsaturated fats. The half-life of fats in human adipose tissue is about 600 days, meaning that significant amounts of previously consumed oils will still be present up to four years after they have been removed from the diet. [4]According to Draper, et al., [5] . . . "

    .

๐Ÿ’ก ๐Ÿค” ". . . Commercial advertising (including medical conferences sponsored by pharmaceutical companies) and commercially sponsored research are creating some false impressions about the role of unsaturated oils in the diet. Like the man who poisoned himself with the "Eskimo diet," many people focus so intently on avoiding one problem that they create other problems. Since I have discussed the association of unsaturated fats with aging, lipofuscin, and estrogen elsewhere, I will outline some of the other problems associated with the oils, especially as they relate to hormones. . . . "

    .

๐Ÿ’ก ๐Ÿค” ". . . Fish oil or safflower oil, though, can't be stored long at room temperature, and at 98 degrees F, the spontaneous oxidation is very fast. . . . "

    .

๐Ÿ’ก ๐Ÿค” ". . . Unsaturated Fats Are Essentially Involved In Heart Damage: The toxicity of unsaturated oils for the heart is well established, [24, 25, 26] though not well known by the public. In 1962, it was found that unsaturated fatty acids are directly toxic to mitochondria. [27] Since stress increases the amount of free fatty acids circulating in the blood (as well as lipid peroxides), and since lack of oxygen increases the intracellular concentration of free fatty acids, stored unsaturated fats would seem to represent a special danger to the stressed organism. . . . • Dr. Monica Aggarwal's personal experience with RA (as well as her practice as a physician), re-affirms what Andy has kindly shared with us. ๐Ÿ‘

If you're interested in Dr. Aggarwal's insights, you may find these video/ audio references useful: Cardiologist, Dr. Monica Aggarwal, Reduces Her RA Inflammation via Plant-Based Nutrition, Diet, Lifestyle: healthunlocked.com/nras/pos... ๐Ÿค“

Essentially, Dr. Aggarwal's & Clint Paddison's practices are 'in synch' โ€” with perhaps slight 'variations on a theme' pacing/ implementation-wise. (The core concepts are the same/ similar.) ๐Ÿ‘

Per usual, we each sort out what works best for us over time & proceed in a way most comfortable for our unique bodies, lifestyles, circumstances. ๐Ÿค”

Fortunately, Andy figured out โ€” over time โ€” what works well for himself, & he generously shares that journey of 'figuring out' with all of us. ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ‘

    (Much appreciation, kind sir. ๐Ÿ™ ๐ŸŒบ ๐Ÿ€ ๐ŸŒž )

  • Thanks for posting this, Kai. Clint's podcasts are so long, I rarely find time to watch them in one go, but they are always inspiring. And I finally got round to watching this one. Well done, Andy!

  • Ditto, Em13. ๐Ÿ‘ I, too, listen to them in 'chunks' (while doing 'mindless/ mundane tasks' โ€” food prep, errands, etc. ๐Ÿ˜€ ).

(Some are so 'dense with info' I've had to stop to take notes! ๐Ÿ“ ๐Ÿ˜ณ I've even referred back to the podcast 'transcripts' ๐Ÿ“– to refresh memory on forgotten details. ๐Ÿ™ƒ ๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿ˜‚ )

Tickled that Andy is yet another NRASer doing well. ๐Ÿค—

[May we all improve โ€” whatever paths work for us. ๐Ÿ™ ]

Oh . . . Andy has a brief, 16-minute presentation ( From Wheelchair to Bikram Yoga (in 10 Months): healthunlocked.com/nras/pos... ), that he gave at 'Oxford Vegan Festival' ๐ŸŽˆ .

    (Deeply moving & informative โ€” rounds out podcast beautifully. ๐ŸŒบ ๐Ÿ™ )

Hope you & your beloveds are doing well, dear lady. Take good care. ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ€ ๐ŸŒบ ๐ŸŒž

  • 'Oxford Vegan Festival' presentation, Andy's Diet and Arthritis:

    .

  • Thanks, Kai. I will check out that presentation.

It is sad that there is so much negativity here around people succeeding with natural solutions. We should all just be glad that something is working for someone. We can always skip a topic if we are not interested without needing to resort to rudeness.

  • Couldn't agree with you more, Em13. ๐Ÿ™

Couldn't agree with you more. ๐Ÿ˜Œ

You'd think the (infinite) Internet/ forum 'space' would be expansive enough for everyone to 'go about their business' & pursue what interests them in peace โ˜ฎ. ๐Ÿ™

[The need to crash another's tiny spot (& p!ss ๐Ÿ’ฆ in the communal pool ๐ŸŠ ) seems odd. ๐Ÿ˜ฏ ๐Ÿ˜ณ ๐Ÿ˜‚ Ironic, too, as we all swim in the very same waters. ๐Ÿค” ๐Ÿ˜„ ]

    Oh well . . . ยฏ\_(ใƒ„)_/ยฏ

    .

It's been going on for as long as I remember. Don't expect it'll ever change. ๐Ÿ˜ณ ๐Ÿ™ƒ ๐Ÿ˜ Guess, we just have a good 'rinse off' ๐Ÿšฟ & go about our business . . . โ˜บ๏ธ๐Ÿšฟ

    .

  • Oh, if you don't mind my asking, Em13: if you know of other free RA/Autoimmune forum(s) where like-minded individuals can comfortably discuss our processes, would you mind PMing them to me? ๐Ÿค” ๐Ÿ™

(I'd appreciate it. ๐Ÿ™ Am interested in engaging with others equally seeking, learning, & communing โ€” not re-hashing basics (or unable to get beyond the fundamentals). [Same ole' circular go-nowhere-time-wasting-flat-earth discussions aren't a good use of (anyone's) time . . . ๐Ÿ˜ณ ๐Ÿ™ƒ ๐Ÿ˜‚ ]

There are 2 other HU RA forums, but they seem relatively 'quiet/ inactive':

    โ€ข 'American RA Warriors': healthunlocked.com/ra-warriors

    โ€ข 'Arthritis Action': healthunlocked.com/arthriti...
