Explains how/ why we have difficulty changing & maintaining new dietary/ lifestyle habits. Time & persistence help us overcome 'The Pleasure Trap'.

The Pleasure Trap: Douglas Lisle at TEDxFremont:
. . . Why does the great male shrike kill bugs and poke them on thorns? Why is it so hard for humans to make the right choices? Douglas Lisle shows us how the answers are related. One of psychology's most innovative and curious minds, Lisle is the Director of Research for TrueNorth Health Center and coauthor of The Pleasure Trap. . . . healthpromoting.com/learnin... ; douglisle.com

An eye-opener as to why so many of us have difficulty overcoming our junk-food addictions -- especially when we 'know better' as to what we should be eating. Explains why we have such difficulty beginning a dietary/ lifestyle process & maintaining it over time. (Beware The Pleasure Trap . . . 😉 ): m.youtube.com/watch?v=nxf4k...

by Douglas Lisle, Ph.D. . . .There is a hidden force that has turned many smart, savvy people into unwitting saboteurs of their own wellbeing. When trying to make positive changes in diet and lifestyle, well-intentioned determination is, surprisingly, rarely enough. People who are chronically overweight, sick and ailing, or junk-food junkies are not that way because they're lazy, undisciplined, or stuck with bad genes. They are victims of a dilemma that harkens back to our prehistoric past...the Pleasure Trap.
Dr. Doug Lisle, a former lecturer in psychology at Stanford University and currently the psychologist for The McDougall Program explains a recent revolution in motivational psychology that can help people break free from the self-destructive rut. A new understanding of why we do what we do has yielded a dramatic new path toward lasting and positive change. His new book, The Pleasure Trap: Mastering the Hidden Force that Undermines Health and Happiness has been critically acclaimed. . . .
Social Disapproval as a Vegan | Doug Lisle, Ph.D: . . . A common problem people face when they first go vegan is the social disapproval they get from their family and friends. Most people's instincts is to dispute back and to justify their stance but there are some psychological approaches one can take to not only avoid an argument but to even help those who are genuinely interested. Dr. Lisle explains the evolutionary and psychological reasons being this phenomenon.
I think junk food addiction is a bit far fetched, particularly for those here who understand that a good diet is one way they can help themselves. Possibly more fitting for members on a weight loss forum, the ones who eat takeaway food often, or those I see having an 11am 'snack' at McDonalds. Making it seem as though we're reliant on such food is a bit offensive. I have fish & chips maybe once a month & enjoy it, a Chinese or Thai 2 or 3 times a year. I don't think it makes such a difference to afford myself such a pleasurable easy meal once in a while.

Trinette (from post: Sally, 'The Galloping Grandma') touches on the difficulties (at ~minute 13) that Dr. Lisle discusses 😳 : healthunlocked.com/cure-art... . (Scroll towards bottom of page for Trinette's experience.)
She captures the essence of what so many of us have experienced (ridicule, put downs, disbelief, negativity . . .) which confirms precisely what Dr. Lisle has described & forewarned us about.
Fortunately, with the loving support of our nearest & dearest, we're able to by-pass the negativity & get on with the task at hand — improving our lives. 🙏 🍀 🌺 🌞
I'm sorry but I don't understand any of your posts here. I don't have time to spend all day reading all these links and watching all the videos. I would love to read your own words, your own ideas, get a sense of 'you'.....
I don't know what all the little pictures are either!
If you click on my profile: healthunlocked.com/user/kai..., you'll be able to read all my own words, ideas, experience, etc. (I've shared extensively over the past 2 years here & elsewhere.) Perhaps from that, you'd get a sense of me. 😌
Fully agree, MrsSW. 👍 My posts, references, links aren't everyones' cup of tea. ☕️ Folks who haven't time to spend all day reading all the links or watching all the videos certainly aren't expected to — especially if the topics aren't of interest. ☺️
This shared information is for people who are seriously interested in such topics & are seeking (free) substantive information & references that have helped people like myself — people actively seeking dietary & lifestyle information. (It's all explained on my profile page.)
Hope this clarifies, MrsSW. Best wishes to you. 🙏 🍀 🌺 🌞

Although SPT's focus is on 'losing weight', the concepts appear to overlap with Dr. Lisles' 'Pleasure Trap' principles 🤔 noted above. 😳 (Sp o o o o o ky . . . .👻 )
That is, shifting our dietary habits onto foods that are favourable to our conditions (whatever dietary path we assess is best for ourselves as unique individuals). 👍
(Truly fascinating 🤓, mind-blowing stuff. 😳💨 )
Illustrates (to me) that we can overcome whatever our food addictions/ issues may be (that is if we have any particular food 'addictions'/ issues).
And, that we can guide/ habituate/ 'train' our tastebuds 👅 to more favourable foods 🥗 that may help our conditions. 🤗 👍
Good news all round 🌀 ♻️ — whether trying to lose weight 💀 , gain weight 🌝 , or break 💔 poor habits or 'unfavourable' addictions. 🙏 🍀 🌺 🌞
" . . . to the degree of your arrogance will be the degree of your suffering."
— Gloria Scott*
.
Wondering if what Gloria Scott has said may also be applicable for those of us with "food addictions" as well? 😳 🤔
[Gloria Scott was a drug/ addiction counsellor & her statement was in the context of treating drug/ alcohol 'addicts'. (Another type of "Pleasure Trap"? 🤔 )]
Perhaps it's applicable to the difficulties we have in weaning off highly addictive foods that we love 😋 💓 & just can't bear to part with? 🤔
Hmmm . . .
Can't help but notice the parallels ⏸ / overlaps 🔀 in various types of 'addictions' to include "food addictions" . . . 😳
Merely thinking aloud . . . 🤔 💭 💬
Observing 👁 👁 similarities . . . 😳 😯
I take GS's expression to mean: the more stubbornly, recalcitrantly, intransigently we cling to our old ways, old habits, old beliefs, etc., the more difficult a time we have — the more suffering we endure . . . 🤔 🤔
"View an interview given by Dr. Alan Goldhamer as part of the iThrive! online documentary series: "Rising from the Depths of Diabetes and Obesity", in November 2017.
There is a health epidemic spreading across America, 71% of the population is currently overweight or obese. Discover how modifications to the diet, such as adding chemicals to the food to artificially stimulate dopamine production in the brain, encourages indulgence and is leading to the development of conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and autoimmune diseases.
Dietary excess is the root cause of these conditions, therefore healing them requires a fundamental shift in diet, returning to nature's way of eating whole foods, free of artificial additives, like salt, oil, and sugar."

If you’re already familiar with Clint Paddison’s (CP) experience & the PP (Paddison Program) process, this may be a useful summary/ refresher. 👍👍
Or, merely nice to share with:
• Loved ones who are genuinely interested in trying to understand ‘what we’re doing’ 🤔
• Fellow autoimmuners who may be interested in exploring such approaches 🕵️♀️🔎
• Our rheumatologist 👩⚕️ (if we’re blessed with a rheum. or other medics 👨⚕️ ) who’s actually interested in hearing & learning about such a process

If the workshop isn’t in your future, there’s abundant information 👨💻 📚 📑 freely accessible online to explore 🕵️♀️🔎 & learn from at your own pace. 😌
Aside: Merely supplemental thoughts 🤔💭💭 for individuals interested in such ‘thinking aloud’.
.
The personal experience CP convey’s may be considered merely an ‘anecdotal’ example of 1 person’s unique Autoimmune/ RA experience. Yet, he’s been able to reverse his (documented) aggressive/ debilitating RA condition and continues to maintain good health (by using his ownPP process) for years!! 😳
(If remembering correctly, it’s been over 5 years, maybe even closer to a decade(?) for himself?! 😯 🤯 )
And, what makes it even more compelling, he’s been able to share his process with many, many of us autoimmuners/ RA-ers who are also doing better — even *remarkably* well!! 😯 😳
(Are we ALL just mere ‘flukes’, 1-offs, or just ‘lucky’? 🤷♀️ 🤦♂️ 🙃 )
.
How many autoimmuners are we aware of who are the ‘exception to the rule’ — who are doing better over time rather than worse over time?!* 🤔 😳
CP has ‘bucked the trend’ & those of us implementing such processes are also ‘bucking the trend’ — even though we’ve been called (labeled, categorised, . . . ) as mere ‘anecdotes’, flukes, 1-offs, or just ‘lucky’ . . . ☺️ 😬 🙃
[*My layman’s understanding is: with autoimmune disease, the ‘typical’ trend is downward decline 📉 over time 😔 😞 — not upward improvement 📈 over time. 😳 ]
