13 Bite-Size Thoughts for Autoimmuners -- Newly Diagnosed (or Not)

13 Bite-Size Thoughts for Autoimmuners -- Newly Diagnosed (or Not)

.

13 Bite-Size Thoughts for Autoimmuners -- Newly Diagnosed (or Not)

.

Originally under heading: First piece of advice to anyone newly diagnosed with RA --broken into 13 bite-size bits 😉, which was originally under 'American RA Warriors' post "What would be your first piece of advice to someone newly diagnosed with RA?" ( healthunlocked.com/ra-warri... ).

.

Here's a revival of an old post/ reply that got deleted throughout my HU account (long story, see below if interested*):

Hope this posts is useful to any newbie (or old-bie) seeking a boost, a spirit lift 👻, spark of hope 💥 , or just a few shared thoughts 🤔.

.

Use whatever works for you & chuck out the rest 🗑. 👍

.

🙏 ☺️ 🍀 🌺

.

____________

.

All in good time, dear lady. All in good time . . . 🙏 👍

I know. It's all overwhelming . . . especially when we're feeling our very worst . . . rock bottom. 😩 😖

All we can do is hunker-down in 'survival mode' to 'get through.' ğŸ˜ž Totally understandable. 👍

In due time, when we begin feeling a bit better 😐 -- seeing glimmers of hope ☺️ -- we can incrementally begin. Take all the time you need . . . at your own pace . . .

In meantime, soak in all the love 💗 & support 👐 of your beloveds (especially the 4-leggeds 🐶 🐱 🐰 🐹 🦄 , who seem to understand best). 😉 They (all) help sustain us through low times. 👍 🙏

.

Supplementally, maybe some of the following will resonate with you, ----- :

.

First piece of advice to anyone newly diagnosed with RA --broken into 13 bite-size bits 😉

.

✅ Grasp the significance of appropriate foods (diet 🍃 ) & lifestyle (exercise/ movement 💃🏻🏃 ) to help influence the course of disease progression (by reducing inflammation 🌡) & increasing bodily healing -- for some (many?) of us.

.

✅ Meds 💊 💉 aren't the 'be-all & end-all ' -- for each & every one of us -- especially if we've ridden the 'med-merry-go-round' ğŸŽ , 'Ferris wheel' ğŸŽ¡, and 'rollercoaster' ğŸŽ¢ . . .

.

✅ It's not an either/ or 'false dichotomy' of 'approaches' (meds 💊 vs. dietary 🍃 ). The 2 aren't 'mutually exclusive'. As individuals, we can successfully use both a dietary/ lifestyle approach (techniques) and meds 'as needed' -- judiciously.

.

✅ Both med & dietary/ lifestyle approaches are 'trial & error', 'hit & miss' processes. Currently, there's no other way -- as each of us reacts uniquely/ individually to each 'introduced' element. There's no "1-size-fits-all" 'certainty' or 'definitives'. It's the 'land of ambiguities' -- probabilities, likelihood's -- if's, and's, & but's . . . 😉

.

✅ Be proactive 🗣💬 & fully immersed/ involved in understanding how to manage your life-long autoimmune disease. Once you get over the initial 'shock/ trauma' 😧 of the diagnosis & begin the on-going 'grieving process' 😩 , you can 'get your bearings' in due time. Be active 🤓, not passive 🙄 in learning & understanding 🤔 how your unique body works.

.

✅ Seek 'realistic hope'. 🙏 Follow autoimmuners/ 👥 physicians 👤👤 who are improving/ healing. 🤗 [Avoid negative nellies 😠, naysayers 😏 , & pooh pooh-ers 😒 like the plague! They'll only spiral you downward 🌀 in wallowing & drowning misery!! 😫 😩 😥 😔 ğŸ˜ž] An occasional 'pity party' 😩 😭 is perfectly understandable -- but you needn't attend every 'open invitation'. 😉 (Don't get 'stuck' in 'O woe is me'. 😓)

.

✅ Surround yourself with loving support of trusted family, friends, co-workers 💑 who understand & support you on your journey -- whether to help you when you need a hand or attend appointments with you. 😊 (And if no one can attend appointments with you, request physician's permission to audio tape meeting, so you can catch all the details you may missed during your note-taking. 📝 Also, your loved ones may want to listen to the meeting, as well, to pick up on points you overlook.)

.

✅ Understand -- at times (by default) -- your having to simply, gently, kindly educate those around you who have little (to no) understanding of autoimmune illness: healthunlocked.com/nras/pos... ♿️ You'll get further being patient & kind 🙂 with well-meaning, yet ill-informed individuals -- than getting flustered 😤 , peevish 😠, or defensive 😕 about their perceived 'rudeness' or 'meanness'. Often they're, merely un-informed. 😐 And, what they may say in a kind-intentioned spirit -- may be misperceived by you.

.

✅ Understand you needn't 'wait for' a formal autoimmune 'diagnosis' before implementing a 'dietary/ lifestyle' approach to help bring down inflammation, slow down/ avert disease progression. (You don't need to 'await' the 'pope's blessing' before doing the 'right' thing. 😉 )

.

✅ Don't be dissuaded or waylaid by naysayers 😏 , & pooh pooh-ers 😒. Remember, if/ when stone throwers 😡 start pelting their little barbs at you ( vimeo.com/5453316 ):

.

✅ Learn to laugh at yourself 😄 & life's 'little cruelties'! The disease is ridiculous/ outrageous in what it does to our body 🙃 & mind 😜 ! And we'd better learn to laugh at & accept these lapses. If we didn't laugh 😂, we'd cry 😥.

.

✅ Initially, this may seem unfair, brutal, unspeakably cruel ('why me⁉️ oh gawd, why me⁉️' 😭 ) -- but in deep, profound moments 😌, you may come to see the journey as 'a blessed curse.' 🙏 You'll learn more 🤓, see more 😳, come to feel & understand 😌 more than you ever imagined. It will change you to your core. 🤗 👍

.

✅ Oh, and whenever anyone -- especially a medical professional says to you "try not to worry" or "let's just wait & see" that is your red flag signal 🚩 🚩 to get your ' 🌙🌙 in gear'!!! 😳 Do your research, learn as much as you reasonably can. Because it is your long-term life on the line -- not any well-meaning, kind-hearted, trusted, respected, authoritative, good-natured physician. You are the only one fully vested in your well-being & have to 'live with' each & every decision made. You must take full ownership/ responsibility of working with your medical team toward finding workable solutions. [In rear-view mirror hindsight/ afterthoughts, blaming medical professionals for their shortcomings, shortsightedness, blind spots, ignorance, heel-dragging, missteps, etc. does you no good. It wastes your precious energy.] Anything that side-tracks you is mere 'noise' -- a waste of time. Keep laser focus on goal of improving/ healing.

.

Keep your eyes on the prize of getting well.

.

( 🔩 everything else.) 😉

.

Be well! 🙏

.

Kind regards,

Kai

.

Hang in there, luv. 👍 Hang in there . . . 🙏 🍀 🌺

How Maya, another young mother of 2 little ones, manages her RA:

• Maya was diagnosed with RA 6 years ago

• She started Methotrexate & went off it to conceive

• After 3 months she got pregnant & was able to breastfeed with few symptoms

• During her 2nd pregnancy she had to take prednisone because the symptoms returned heavily

• She found PP & started it after pregnancy

• She charts her progress to keep track

• Once on PP, flares went from every 7 to 10 days, to every 20 days & finally to no flares at all

• Bikram yoga played a major part in her recovery

• She takes probiotic supplements, which help a lot

• She’s no longer on any medications & is back in control of her situation

Pareto principle — 80/20 rule ( en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Par... ):

The Pareto principle (also known as the 80/20 rule, the law of the vital few, or the principle of factor sparsity) states that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes.

[CONCEPTS applicable to RA/ Autoimmuners & their physicians — not just cancer patients & their physicians]

• physicians medical care (stateside at least)

• physician-patient relationship

• throwing everything at the disease

• drawbacks of 'standard care'

• phase 3 clinical trials

• conservative physicians/ groups not wanting to be 'blamed'

• base rate of success

• "do no harm" (cardinal rule) vs risk-taking (by patients willingness to take chances)

• patients decisions (not physicians) vs physicians malpractice/ loss of license (physicians between a rock & a hard place)

• aside: Dr. BW's wife has RA

• statistical analysis, "null hypothesis" testing framework, scientific method, stats, effect size

• *meaningful* impact on patient population

• nature of statistical analysis of medical research

• population effects, epidemiological, median survival, 2-year survival parameter, "noise" in trial, yada yada yada

• null hypothesis testing is counterproductive

• "Perils of Evidence Based Medicine" paper

• problem of variance, statisticians . . .

• lobbying FDA, NIH to abandon null hypothesis testing framework

• effect size

• rigid adherence to a statistical system without paying attention to what the disease is, survival, variance, etc.

• use common sense, not abandoning traditional medicine

• vaccine analogy

• logical approach, not 'cultish' with approach to science

• plot distributions of outcomes

• look at overlap, tails, . . . 'common sense' vs. 'statistical analysis'

• blah blah blah

Surviving Terminal Brain Cancer — Jun 12, 2017

In 1995, Dr. Ben Williams was diagnosed with a deadly brain tumor called glioblastoma multiforme, which is generally terminal. He added his own regimen to the standard treatment, and twenty-two years later, he's still alive. Tune in to learn about what he did to extend his life.

.

[Guessing this confirms much of what we're learning . . . 😳 ]

.

_____

Dr. Ben Williams (professor of psychology): virtualtrials.com/williams.cfm

.

_____

"Perils of Evidence Based Medicine" 2010: virtualtrials.com/pdf/ebm.pdf

ABSTRACT Evidenced-based medicine views random-assignment clinical trials as the gold standard of evidence. Because patient populations are heterogeneous, large numbers of patients must be studied in order to achieve statistically significant results, but the means or medians of these large samples have weak predictive validity for individual patients. Further, the logic of random-assignment clinical trials allows only the inference that some subset of patients benefits from the treatment. Post-hoc analysis is therefore necessary to identify those patients. Otherwise, many patients may receive treatments that are useless and potentially harmful.

Refreshing to see accuracy/ preciseness with which he explains a dietary/ lifestyle (d/l) process (after reading so many misconceptions), as well as his generously showing his unvarnished personal experience, day by day. 🤗

[Many thanks to SB. 🙏 😌 His truthfulness/ honesty is sincerely appreciated by those of us who are also on a d/l journey & wish to learn from (& share with) each other. 👍 ]

Katy's own words best tell her JIA story (in 15 minutes):

Katy's Inspirational Progress Against Lifelong Rheumatoid Arthritis:

.

.

👶 Katy was diagnosed with JIA at 10 months old

👱‍♀️ She has battled with her condition for 26 years

↩️ After starting the Paddison Program she has turned her condition around

💊 She now needs only a fraction of the drugs she was taking

🌅 She wakes up with no morning stiffness

📆 Improvements began within 3 days of the Program

🔥 Bikram Yoga is restoring increased functionality to her affected joints

.

This is the 📖 passage Katy reads (Jeremiah 29 biblegateway.com/passage/?s... ) that sent chills down her spine giving her hope & finally became her reality:'

" 12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.

13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.

11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future . . . "

A thoughtful, insightful 👁 👁 perspective from ‘Silentreader’ (🤫 📖) about questioning 🤔, researching 🕵️‍♀️ , & understanding 😌 (as best we can) our treatment options before blindly following (or rushing into) any "expert’s" or "specialist’s" 👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️ advice (‘opinion’) when it comes to chronic, progressive illness: healthunlocked.com/asthmauk...

(Experts/ specialists are ‘human’ & just as susceptible to ‘human error’ 🙅‍♂️ — as we all are. 😳 )

Much appreciation to ‘🤫 📖’ for expressing such concepts soundly, logically, sensibly. 🙏😌

Responsibility utimately falls back onto our shoulders 🤷‍♀️ to do the best we can to inform 👩‍💻/ educate 👨‍🏫 ourselves to make the best treatment choice for ourselves (weighing ⚖️ our unique conditions & circumstances) — even though we’re at our most unwell 🤢, vulnerable 😩 , frightened 😧.

Another ‘thought’ that seems to take on particular significance when we’re unwell: fear 😨

[From post healthunlocked.com/nras/pos... ]

.

.

"Aside:

We all ‘hear’ horror stories 👻 💀 . . .

. . . people get hit by buses 🚌 because they left the house 🏡 . . .

. . . people die in plane crash because they flew ✈️ . . .

.

Yet, we don’t seem(?) to hear much about people not looking both ways 👀 before crossing the road 🛣 . . .

or the infinitesimal probability 📉 of dying by plane crash? 🤔

.

• Wondering how common ‘hospitalisation 🏥 by neti pot’ is for the immunocompromised 🤧 ? (What’s ‘statistical probability’ 📊 ?)

• Also wondering, how common is it for the immunocompromised to not (routinely, scrupulously?) practice proper hygiene/ safety precautions given known vulnerabilities? 🤔

.

On a ‘contemplative’ note:

"Una vida con miedo es como la vida medias."

If still searching for answers/ ‘diagnosis’ while manifesting various symptoms, kindly consider content of post ( healthunlocked.com/nras/pos... ):

Kindly get eyes checked ASAP, BlackNov, especially if experiencing Floaters as noted in ‘orange section’ of page: nhs.uk/conditions/floaters-...

The list of symptoms you’ve kindly noted overlap with a number of Inflammatory Arthritis/ Autoimmune illnesses as noted here: healthunlocked.com/nras/pos...

Continue working with your physicians/ rheumatologist 👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️ to assess likely condition(s) & course of action going forward.

In meantime, additional food for thought ( healthunlocked.com/cure-art... ) if interested.

😊 healthunlocked.com/nras/pos...

😊 healthunlocked.com/cure-art...

.

.

It is indeed daunting, as we (& often our beloved medics 👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️ ) don’t know what’s wrong with us nor can they clearly, unequivocally diagnose us promptly. [Disease(s) ebb ‘n flow & mutate 🧛🏻‍♀️ 🧛🏽‍♂️ 🧟‍♀️ over time — a ‘moving target’ { { ğŸŽ¯} } so can be extremely difficult/ impossible to ‘nail down’ 🕳🔨 definitively.]

Merely opinion: avoid getting ‘wrapped around the axel’ (obsessing) about precisely nailing an ‘exact’ diagnosis. Leave that to your physicians 👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️ to ‘spin their wheels’ ((⚙️⚙️)) around ( healthunlocked.com/nras/pos... ). Your best efforts are spent: keeping focus — laser focus 👁 👁 — on optimal nutrient intake ( healthunlocked.com/nras/pos... ), de-stressing 🧖‍♀️ , deep body 🧘‍♀️ & mind relaxation 💆‍♀️ ( healthunlocked.com/nras/pos... ), & gentle movement 🚶‍♀️/ exercise 🏊‍♀️ ( healthunlocked.com/nras/pos... ) . . .

In other words, ‘take as good a care of yourself as you possibly can’. 😌 🙏 💗

The better conditions/ circumstances you can create of loving support 💑👨‍❤️‍👨 for your body 🚺 / mind 🧠, the better you can move forward toward improving/ healing — halting 🛑 disease progression.

Enlist the help of trusted loved ones 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦👨‍👩‍👦‍👦 if/when ‘the going gets tough’ 🚷 ♿️ . (Ask for help 🗣💬 when you need it.)

.

Aside, have learned via experience 😖🔨 (‘school of hard knocks’) that once you start improving overall life situation, overall health, the multi-symptoms/ multi-illnesses gradually subside/ dissipate — over time ⏳⌛️. 👍👍

[No clear cut ‘dividing lines’ 🤒 | 🤢 | 🤮 | 😷 | 😵 amongst the various ailments — never mind the evolution of each disease itself 😳 🤯 . Too much overlap/ blurring of lines 🔀 amongst ‘n between them, so needn’t waste time obsessively ‘splitting hairs’ 💇‍♀️ .]

Merely opinion: Take overall, ‘big picture’ 🖼 , ‘bird’s eye’ 🐤 view (Wholistic view) — avoid zooming 🔭 in on (obsessing over, wasting time over) hair-splitting minutiae 🔬 (Reductionist view). Focus on doing ‘the big things’ right & notice improvements along the way. 👍👍

"Genes load the gun, lifestyle/ environment pull the trigger"

”Your genes are NOT your fate"

(Additional thoughts for RA-ers/ Autoimmuners of all ages.)

[Originally posted at: ‘Test to find out if my daughter may be pre disposed to RA?’ ( healthunlocked.com/nras/pos... )]

.

5minutespeace & bpeal1 might you kindly consider Katy ( healthunlocked.com/jia/post... ), Cole, Jenn, & Joseph’s ( healthunlocked.com/nras/pos... ) experience? 🤔

Might you consider connecting with Cole’s mum, Christine 👩‍👦 ( naturalcurejia.org/ )? 🤔

My simple layman’s understanding is "genes load the gun, lifestyle/ environment pull the trigger".

.

bernese1225, there are multiple tests ( healthunlocked.com/nras/pos... ) interpreted by astute, skilled rheumatologist that may be able to reveal if autoimmune diseases are beginning to reveal themselves (emerge) in your daughter. (Flickers of autoimmune flame can begin to show signs of ‘activity’ years before disease starts manifesting outwardly via pain & other symptoms.)

Kindly, please 🙏 understand, ”your genes are NOT your fate" ( ted.com/talks/dean_ornish_s... ).

(Genes/ DNA are not destiny. 😌 )

There’s much you daughter can do to side step/ avoid "pulling the trigger", if her genetic gun is already pre-loaded with RA, diabetes, hypo/ hyper-thyroid, or whatever cluster of autoimmune diseases her genes may be holding.

Wishing you each, the very best for yourselves & your beloved girls. 👶 👧 🧒 👱‍♀️ 🧑

Fatigue/ Exhaustion, Inflammation, “Spoon Theory" 🥄

(simple layman’s thoughts/ understanding)

.

Exactly!

It’s ‘battling disease’, manwithnoname, precisely as Gnarli noted.

It’s a 24/7 battle that quietly ‘rages on’ that all our bodily energy expends ‘fighting’ ⚔️ 🤺 the war around the clock 🕐🕕🕚 , day 📅 after day 📆 after day 🗓 . . .

Your body is rightfully exhausted 😴 💤 from wrestling 🤼‍♀️ a never-ending battle each & every day.

[Maybe think of it as something like you’re body is running a marathon every day? 🏃‍♂️ . . .🏃‍♂️ . . .🏃‍♂️ Your body’s tired, exhausted, run-down from running it’s ‘daily marathon’. It needs a lot of sleep/ rest 🛌 to recuperate.]

Until disease/ inflammation 🔥 (the daily marathon) subsides — becomes ‘well managed’ — exhaustion will remain ‘the norm’.

Wishing you well working with your medics to find ways to improve disease management, manwithnoname. 😌 🙏 🍀 🌺 ğŸŒž

.

Aside: If you’re interested in a bit more about deep, restorative sleep 🛌 , Gnarli & manwithnoname, sleep scientist 👨‍🔬 Matthew Walker’s work might be of interest ( healthunlocked.com/cure-art... ) — provided it doesn’t put you to sleep 😴 💤 . . . . ☺️

Bingo, Dunk! 👍👍 Don’t know if you’ve already heard of Dr. Brooke Goldner 👩🏻‍⚕️ ( healthunlocked.com/cure-art... ), but her work with Lupus & Autoimmune illness might interest you? 🤔

.

Ditto, YanniBaci/ ‘Deb from Australia’ 🇦🇺 . ☺️ 👍

If such things interest you, kindly pop over & have a look-see 👀 .

While disease is ‘active’, your body is busy at work — around the clock 🕐 🕕 🕙 (24/7) — "fighting" 😖🥊🥊 the disease.

In other words (in perhaps over simple terms), your body’s in ‘overdrive’ wrestling 🤼‍♀️ with inflammation 🔥, so you’re going to be thoroughly, utterly exhausted. 🤤

(It’s not ‘lack of willpower’ or ‘laziness’ or whatever ‘label’ uninformed onlookers may mistakenly slap on to the debilitating exhaustion. 😵 )

It’s your body relentlessly, tirelessly, heroically, fighting 👊👊 a mighty foe 🐉 — keeping you alive. 🤯

So, until that inflammation/ disease dissipates/ subdues, you’ll likely continue to be chronically exhausted/ fatigued. 😴 🤤 😵

Please 🙏 , kindly try to take as a good a care of yourself as you possibly can, YanniBaci/ Deb, to subdue ‘the beast’ 🐲🐉 .

Wishing you both, Dunk & Deb, the very best. 😌 🙏 🍀 🌺 ğŸŒž

[Oh . . . if this helps at all in grasping the nature/ depth of the fatigue/ exhaustion, “The Spoon Theory" 🥄 ( healthunlocked.com/nras/pos... ) sometimes does the trick 🤹‍♀️ .]

If this ( healthunlocked.com/nras/pos... , healthunlocked.com/nras/pos... ) helps put anything into perspective/ context, Nettac? 🤔

(Merely my simple (simplistic?) understanding of exhaustion/ fatigue? 🤷‍♀️ )

Don’t think trying to do ‘more’ exercise is going to do anything towards increasing energy 🔋⚡️⚡️ — decreasing exhaustion 🤤 😴 . In fact, quite the opposite. 😳

Sounds like your body is already busily expending all its energy ⚡️⚡️ fighting/ battling inflammation around the clock (thus the fatigue/ exhaustion) & is desperately seeking respite — restorative rest, recuperation. (Merely my layman’s opinion. 🤷‍♂️ )

Maybe ‘disease activity’ is busy percolating (using up your precious energy ⚡️⚡️ ) & needs to be better managed/ controlled by whatever means works well for you? 🤔

Hoping you find the deep, restorative energy soon, Nettac. 😌 🙏 🍀 🌺 ğŸŒž

.

Fully, understood. 😌 🙏 Snail-paced 🐌 walk where a turtle 🐢 could easily outrun us. 😯

[Similarly, had near bed-bound periods of utter, relentless exhaustion 🤤 😴 😵. Could barely manage ‘essentials’: toilet 🚽 , feeding 🥣 , ‘resting’ 🛌 . Forget bathing 🛀 ! 😳 (That had to be ‘worked up to’. 😳 Pee yew 🙊 . Could scrape ‘the stink’ 🧟‍♂️🧟‍♀️ off!) 🤯 😆 . ]

Vitamin D 💊 (physician testing/ prescribing high-loading dose followed by lower maintenance dose) & anaemia of chronic illness (which tie into chronic fatigue/ exhaustion noted above) may be a points of research 🕵️‍♀️ ğŸ”Ž, if interested , Nettac? 🤔

Yes indeed, gawd help those with children 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦👨‍👩‍👦‍👦👨‍👩‍👧‍👧 to raise, careers (ğŸ‘®â€â™€ï¸ğŸ‘·â€â™‚ï¸ğŸ’‚â€â™€ï¸ğŸ•µï¸â€â™‚ï¸ğŸ‘©â€âš•ï¸ğŸ‘¨â€ğŸŒ¾ğŸ‘©â€ğŸ³ğŸ‘¨â€ğŸŽ“ğŸ‘©â€ğŸ«ğŸ‘¨â€ğŸğŸ‘©â€ğŸ’»ğŸ‘¨â€ğŸ’¼ğŸ‘©â€ğŸ”§ğŸ‘¨â€ğŸ”¬ğŸ‘©â€ğŸŽ¨ğŸ‘¨â€ğŸš’ğŸ‘©â€âœˆï¸ğŸ‘©â€ğŸš€ğŸ‘©â€âš–ï¸ğŸŽ… ) to maintain — demanding lives 🙍‍♀️🙍‍♂️ to ‘live’ while struggling 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♂️ with illness 🤕 🤢 😵 .

.

As far as up-keeping house chores 🏠 , why remove 'protective layer of coating' (aka ‘dust’) from furnishings? Why 'hoover free-range wildlife grazings’ (‘crumbs’ for critters) from floors/ carpets? ☺️

Easing up on ‘unrealistic expectations’ of ourselves, ‘letting go’ of less important things, & ‘asking for help’ when we need it is sometimes a mind-easing way to go? 🤔
