My father was diagnosed with autoimmune encephalitis, after experiencing seizures and deja vu, approx 12 months ago, he was treated with
steroids
. He subsequently developed diabetes and 9 weeks ago was admitted to hospital after developing a leg infection.

This year's PMRGCAuk AGM
First there was a talk by an NHS Dietitian giving tips for weight control on
steroids
. I'd have liked a bit more evidence-based detail on how
steroids
affect weight but as she pointed out, there hasn't been much research into long-term use of
steroids
and side-effects.

max inhaler dose?
I’ve taken a lot of
steroids
this year and am trying to reduce the number of courses. However, having phoned the surgery today, as my asthma has worsened and I’ve also lost my voice, a letter hasn’t yet been sent from the hospital, which led to a debate as to whether this was ok.

A few developments - anybody got similar
Secondly it looks might I may need to go back onto
steroids
, not Prednisolone but Hydrocortisone. I have been feeling a bit dodgy in a morning if I don’t get enough sleep and if I get stressed (fortunately not very often) I feel a bit unwell.

despair
The new consultant immediately put me on
steroids
for a month . She had read everything about me ( including cardiac history). 3 days after starting
steroids
I stopped sleeping , 3 weeks of this turned me quite crazy / exhausted too.

returning Sweets
It took nearly a year of
steroids
for it to go. I thought that was it. Over the last 6 months i had raised red/purple rashes on my legs didn't think anything about it until some said it can recur and when i looked at the rash there was no doubt it is sweets. I'm back on the
steroids
.

Regular seasonal flare-ups
GP has just this week put me on
steroids
6 x 5mg daily for 5 days. I am then to be tried on Carbocysteine after I complete the
steroids
. Latest blood tests were all "fine". Peak flow on the
steroids
is climbing steadily, but I know it will drop again once I finish.

Tired of colitis
Following that was a month of prednisone pills to wean me off of the
steroids
and a year of Lialda (delayed release Mesalamine). I also changed my diet to the specific carbohydrate diet, which I am convinced help me to heal.

My GCA Update
My doctor just notified me: “Ordered Bactrim 1 tab to be taken M/W/F FOR Infection prophylaxis while on high dose
steroids
.” Is that standard? She also ordered a medicine to protect my stomach from the 60 mg
steroids
: famatodine, 20 mg. Same as Pepcid AC, I think?

Hi Guys.......
GP put my
Steroids
up from 2mg to 15mg for 2wks to reduce the high inflammation markers. I was also Pre Diabetic but my new regime of very low sugar diet worked so no longer. All levels came right down CRP 59 to 23 etc. GP suggests reduce by 1mg each week til 10mg then maybe more slowly.

immunotherapy damaging kidneys
hi My mother has been having successful treatment for stage 3 lung cancer, but the immunotherapy has negatively affected her kidneys, so she is having
steroids
and they have said they cannot continue to offer the immunotherapy.

eosinophilia and nasty chest cold
I have reduced
steroids
and consultant is hopeful of elimination soon. Energy levels have really improved too. So, in the last two days I have nosedived. I put this down to cold air exposure which has led to chest cold, aches and pains and restricted breathing again. I feel awful.

PMR Symptoms or Pred Withdrawal
My initial PMR onset and diagnosis was only a short period of time and my symptoms responded well to
steroids
. This means I’m aware of the severe effects of PMR. I still get tired easily and have to contend with side effects of the Pred - I haven’t dealt with being on them well.
