my GP has changed my inhaler from fostair 100 mg 4 puffs a day to Trimbow 172/5/9 four puffs a day.
I am giving this ago as every year in the winter I get a chest infection and end up on steroids and antibiotics.
My question is on some tablet form I have been offered above . I have read allot of horrible side effects on them . Has anybody had them and had any side effects and are they any good ? I don’t like the thought of living on an antibiotic tablet 3 times a week . Thank you Jules

I've been on azythromycin for about 7 months (3 days a week)
Also I was on montelukast a long time ago .... I didn't like montelukast and didn't think it was doing anything attrr many discussions with many doctors it was decided it was "worth trying" to see if it did make a difference (it didnt)
The montelukast, I was no better on it and no worse off once I stopped it ( i did take it for years... asking if/how I could stop it and kept getting told no)
The azithromycin has kept me infection free for 5 months, I used to get an infection every 2-3 months, it's also lowered my FENO to normal levels (something about azithromycin being used long term to reduce inflammation, apparently its well tested and researched as a use its just not recognised by the manufacturer... so it's an "off label use" )
Have you been referred to a specialist? ... im surprised your GP is prescribing azythromycin... mine wouldn't give me a rescue pack without the hospital saying so
GP referred me to respiratory specialist and had a CT scan and spirometer test all good , changed my inhaler to Trimbow from fostair and recommend the tablets but I was hesitant as the reviews on side effect and heart scared me
They made me have an ECG before I started the azythromycin but a quick Google and its something to do with an elongated something (something to do with electrical pulses) and if they are already elongated azythromycin is likely to make them worse (which they tell me wouldn't be good)
But my heart is normal (god knows I've had enough tests on it) so the ECG returned as normal and I started azythromycin early May this year.
This will be my fourth winter of taking Azithromycin 250mgs on Mon Wed & Fri from November to April as a prophylactic. I've found it fantastic at keeping infections at bay as my asthma comes with a high propensity to chest infections. I'm thrilled not to be getting any more damage to my lungs and very happy to take them. Azith seems to have the added bonus of drying any mucus in my lungs. No side effects so far especially as I had severe acid reflux already and its no worse. I used to have endless infections then abs and more abs, 5 times they turned in to pneumonia.
Addendum, I've been taking montelukast for about 10 years with no issues.
thank you for that , I’m the same acid reflux and mucus in throat so throat clearing allot . Chest infections every winter I’m so sick of them . I want to try the Azith but the side effects after reading them bothered me so I appreciate the feedback
Forgot to say, I always take the Azith during or just after brunch as I do with any antibiotics regardless of whatever the leaflet say(s as advised by a good GP). I cant take any meds, vets or supplements onnan empty stomach
I'm on trimbow and Azth since April 2018 no side affects and have only had one infection since the Azth I'm on they daily and I'm so glad I'm on them x
I'm not on Trimbow, but I've been on Montelukast and Azithromycin for many years. Montelukast stopped the coughing during the night, only side effect I get is hot for a little while an hour after taking it-but I've only read of one other person having this as well 😂. Azithromycin, I take it 9 out 12 months a year as I have tinnitus, certain brands give me an upset tummy for about half an hour a couple of hours after taking it. So I do vary the time I take it if I need to go out, but it's worth it as I used to produce copious amounts of sputum but now I hardly produce any and I can walk up hills again. I'm on Fostair 100/6 which works well for me.Maybe agree to trial them and see how it goes? xx
Have you ever had any ECG check ups ? I was told if on Azith you have to as they can interfere with the electrical impulses to your heart . Reading side effects they sound scary
No, I've not had an ECG, but I've only spoken to not seen my consultant since COVID happened. I'm waiting for an in person appointment this time, but I'm guessing it will be a long wait. They sometimes run blood tests though, which I think is because of the Azithromycin.
Thank you . Use a spacer for the Trimbow and don’t breath in to fast or can cause thrush on back of throat . Always gargle after and spit out . Good luck 🤞
Azithromycin is v gd 4 many people.as well as being antibiotic,it has anti inflammatory benefits.Montelukast is a gamechanger for some people - it was for my 5yr old grandson.neither of us have side effects x
I took azithromycin for over a year until my chest stabilized. Once it started to work I was very good and stable. I stopped it in December last year. Have just been put back on it for the winter months as I tend to have flare ups during winter. It is important to have regular liver function tests with it.
I've been on Montelucast for well over a year, zero side effects and a month ago I was escalated to Azithromycin daily, again zero side effects. However zero long term improvement as well. I did get some relief for a month or so from Montelukast but it was short lived. As some people have commented I had to have an ECG before respiratory would prescribe long term Azithromycin. Really hope they work for you.
