Propranolol and Buspar

Anyone have any experience with Propranolol or Buspar to help with anxiety?I have been on low doses of Klonopin and Prozac for years and would like to stop taking Klonopin regularly and add Buspar to help the Prozac be more effective for me because I can’t take more than 10 mg every other day. Do you think the Propranolol could replace the Klonopin? I will be asking this to my meds dr tomorrow, but I just wanted to know if anyone had suggestions.

It’s a different medication that does something different. I tried to replace Xanax with Klonopin but all it did was make me tired. No calming effects at all. The propranolol made me sleepwalk so I take Atenolol. It does help with anxiety but not the same as Xanax and not the same as Klonopin. But every person is different and medicines effect people differently. You might find more success then I did with Propanolol. Good luck at the doctor.

I tried propranolol and buspar and neither did much for me as far as reducing my anxiety like klonopin did. i also tried prozac and zoloft and neither of those helped either. We all react differently so it's possible they will work for you. I did taper off the klonopin very slowly without any issues. I ended up doing a psychopharmacological test using my dna to determine which meds were best suited for me and started on one that was recommended (pristiq) and it has worked well. My test was from Genesight and paid for by my insurance. It's a good way to take a lpot of the guess work out of the process.

That’s interesting! I wish I was offered that dna test. Would make things a lot easier.

I also am on propranolol I’ve been on it for years now I don’t feel that just that would help with anxiety I know it definitely does help though because when I was in the hospital they changed me to something else and the anxiety was worse I can say that when I went back on it how much better I felt Klonopin I could not take I took one about those one day and I was so dizzy and shaky my neurologist said it was too strong for me not to take it anymore

I haven’t had luck with Buspar or Propranolol for helping with my anxiety. I do have really high anxiety, so that could be part of the problem. I’m currently on Klonopin, which used to help a lot, but I think I’ve developed a tolerance. I hope your doctor has some good insight on what the best option for you is.

Thanks, my dr. has upped my dose of the Klonopin. It’s my choice if I need to take his full recommendation. It gives me some peace of mind to know I can take more when needed. My anxiety is very up and down and unpredictable and can be severe and debilitating. I can take a full dose at these times. He didn’t recommend I try the Propranolol because of my slight heart issue.

So I found buspar to be very weak. I stopped it and literally felt no different. The propanolol made a big difference. When the anxiety causes so much adrenaline that it speeds up your heart rate it is no good. This keeps your heart rate and bp down. And because that’s down you are aren’t so anxious over it. Try it. It’s so worth a shot. Benzodiazepines help but only use when needed. Go off them slowly though. Good luck!

As I said above, my dr didn’t think Propranolol was a good choice for me. My age and slight heart problem were factors for this. He said I could certainly try Buspar, but he said it has little effect with lots of people.
