Meadowsmom: Repost for Responses

I had a hemithyroidectomy in October 2017 due to thyroid cancer. I have been religiously followed by doctors for follow up and so far no cancer recurrence. For the first year after surgery medication was not required and I was well. After a year I started to feel unwell and tried Synthroid briefly (hair loss scared me) and then switched to Thyrogold. I took Thyrogold 5 months but stopped because I started to feel awful on it (excruciating aching joints and could barely lift left arm, hair issues, weight gain, eyelash hair loss, etc). I think the t3/T4 combination was not right for me. I decided to try Synthroid again. I have ccurrently been taking Synthroid for the past 8 months, 4.5 months on 50mcg and now for the past 3.5 months, 75mcg Synthroid. I am currently feeling pretty good and most issues have resolved, with the exception of sometimes feeling a little tired in late afternoon and hair still thin but appears to be falling out less now. I feel so much better on T4 only. Here are my recent blood lab results:

TSH. 1.140. (0.450-4.500)

Free T4 1.33 (0.82-1.77)

Free T3. 2.6. (2.0-4.4)

RT3, 14.8 (9.2-24.1)

Thyroglobulin antibody <1.0 (0.0-0.9)

Thyroglobulin 2.5 (1.5- 38.5)

Vit D —-Calcitriol 49.2 (19.9-79.3); 25-hydroxy 59.3 (30.0-100.0)

Ferritin 61 (15-150)

Folate (folic acid) 14.9 (>3.0)

Vit B12 1667 (232-1245)

Zinc, whole blood 735 (440-860)

Vit B6 23.4. (2.0-32.8)

Selenium 288 (100-340)

Iron. 90 (27-159); saturation 28% (15-55%); tibc 320 (250-450); Uibc 230 (131-425)

I am scheduled to see my doctor in 2.5 weeks for new blood labs. Your thoughts/comments are appreciated. Thank you.

Hiya. I was cancer too. Some of us feel better with tsh nearer 1. Your t3 could be higher so maybe a slight increase in t4 would get it higher in range. May get rid of afternoon tiredness.

I am an old lowthyroid patient who is on Levothyroxine. Can anyone tell me what difference there is between Synthroid and Levothyroxine? I gather they are both T4?????

Hope you get sorted out soon.

Brand names they are both similar ... what I meant to say was Synthroid is brand name. Some of the people I chat to in the US think it causes hair loss and don't like it but I don't know if that is true or not.
