Hemithyroidectomy

Histology from a right hemithyroidectomy showed background of Hashimoto’s in September 2024. A month later the left side swelled significantly & a scan showed acute thyroiditis with high vascularity, lymphatic impact & thyroid inferno. The report says it’s unlikely to be Hashimoto’s.

I have a friend with the following history - Hemithyroidectomy 50 years ago. Started 50 mcg Levo 20 years ago. Then the familiar pattern of statin, BP meds, Omeprazole, osteopaenia, GTN. I have always encouraged her to ask GP for increase ( currently on 100mcg ) and recently to have fT3 measured.

I am between 24-48hrs post hemithyroidectomy and am very uncomfortable. Just wondering what other people’s recovery was like? How long until you were able to do normal day to day things. I have 3 young children and am very active so finding this really difficult! Thanks.

Hello all,I wake up in the morning with a strong sensation of a lump at the base of my throat. As I had surgery in December 23 I was expecting some discomfort for a while but it's not improving. It is worse in the morning then fades somewhat during the day but never fully goes away. I would like to speak

I have also had a hemithyroidectomy in 2021 so only have the right side remaining.

I had thyroid cancer in 2015 ,i had a hemithyroidectomy , also hsve pernicious anaemia and fibromyalgia noth of which occurred after my thyroid operation.Since then my ENT has lowered my thyroxine to 25mcg last year and since then had wright gain and hair loss ,bald patches appearing.

Has anyone else had a flare up of another nodule years after a hemithyroidectomy and what treatment did you have? I have read up about ablation treatment but don't believe this would be an option for me because they do not provide it at my hospital and others aren't taking referrals.

Hello, I’m usually on the pernicious anaemia forum but I’ve been recovering from a diagnostic hemithyroidectomy confirming thyroid cancer. I think I am beginning to enter hypothyroidism in a big way and am waiting for my NHS TSH test results.

They were not happy to follow through with hemithyroidectomy without confirmation of the autonomous nodule with a nuclear scan, which I was told could not be done until I had stopped breastfeeding completely.

Here I am now at 12 weeks post hemithyroidectomy, feeling pretty rubbish, constantly exhausted, my anxiety has hit the roof and I can tick off most of the hypothyroid symptoms.

I've had one episode of toxic nodule hyperthyroidism back in 2015, hemithyroidectomy in 2018. Then I got graves (unrelated apparently) in 2022. My t4 was 63, my t3 was 30! so was on carb until June 2023. I've not been on any meds since.

evening all 🙂 I had a hemithyroidectomy in 2021 due to a large benign tumour on the left side of my thyroid, the right side was biopsied but left due to being non cancerous even though there is 3cm nodule on there. I didn’t get put on any medication post surgery as bloods were all ok.

In the 3 years since having my hemithyroidectomy, I have suffered many ailments which are affecting me constantly. That's why this group was recommended to me. Looking forward to reading and contributing with my fellow thyroid sufferers!

Anyone know whether surgeons try to preserve the parathyroid glands associated with the half-thyroid removed during a hemithyroidectomy? I would imagine that they're tricky to preserve so I wouldn't be surprised if they just whip them out along with the half-thyroid being removed.

I have a follow up appointment on 5/2 at the ent dept of the hospital where I had my hemithyroidectomy exactly one year ago, and so would really appreciate some pointers as to what I should be asking during that appointment.

Hi first week of September got a right hemithyroidectomy lab result was carcinome papillary (the large one was 0.8mm x 0.5mm but repport said they see lot of sub milimeter cell. And 10% was braf v600e ).

Hi, I am arranging post-hemithyroidectomy blood tests with the GP, and have been told that the lab will only test T4 if TSH reading indicates that it is necessary; wanted to check whether this means that they might miss something. I already know that I have Hashimotos. Thanks for any insight.
