Low mood - Can someone please advise?

Hello I am in remission from graves but just don't feel well. I am 51 and am experiencing hot flashes and low mood. Below are my recent blood results:

B12 535

Folate 11.4

Ferritin 90.5

Estradiol <5

Fsh 142.60

Lh 76.70

Vit D 90

Iron 16.60

Transferrin 2.5

TIBC 62.8

Iron Saturation 26

Magnesium 85

T4 17.6

TSH .09

FREE T3 3.66

I feel quite low in mood and sluggish both of which are most unusual. Could it be because of low estradiol level? Thank you for your advice.

Please add the reference ranges for your results (often in brackets at the side of the result) so that we can interpret them and help you.

Also, please add the unit of measurement for B12 and Vit D.

Shinbone We need the ranges to be able to interpret the results. I would like to say that your low mood is a result of your Ft 3 being low in range which I think it probably is. But without the range can't be sure.

As you have Hashimoto's as well as Graves' disease are you on strictly gluten free diet?

This helps thousands of autoimmune thyroid patients

Your FT3 looks very low

Changing to a strictly gluten free diet may help reduce symptoms, help gut heal and slowly lower TPO antibodies

While still eating high gluten diet ask GP for coeliac blood test first or buy test online for under £20, just to rule it out first

Assuming test is negative you can immediately go on strictly gluten free diet

(If test is positive you will need to remain on high gluten diet until endoscopy, maximum 6 weeks wait officially)

Trying gluten free diet for 3-6 months. If no noticeable improvement then reintroduce gluten and see if symptoms get worse

For lots of info regarding estradiol check out this website, I have used their services. menopausedoctor.co.uk/menop...

It seems they are on the ball when it comes to routing out the latest research but there are other places offering guidance, see also:

British Menopause Society at: thebms.org.uk

here you will find lots of independent info and a search function to locate a specialist , private or NHS, near you.

All the best

Time to try hrt? Xxx

My daughter has hypo thyroid and has changed her diet to lower fat sugar and carbs and has felt better.. The monthly was getting too heavy. The hormones are oestrogen and progesterone which with Graves may combine eithof lower progesterone. If you have Hashis as well you might have additional hot flushes from gluten intolerance and may be other intolerances too. I had to remove tannins in tea as black tea has increased tannins from roasted leaves, which affect the blood making iron less easy to absorb. If you can have a will woman check as well as your thyroid results, it may help. I found taking phytoestrogen in supplements helpful as well as Efamol or evening primrose helpful as well. Fresh garlic cloves chopped on food can help menstruation too.

I am not sure if you have gone through menopause yet? Two of my doctors say any stress can bring on Graves which mine must have been menopause among other life stresses I have. I was diagnosed Graves Feb 2019.

I am now remission from Graves and turning 49 in 2 months. My TSH was 2.3 - which I am told is normal but you feel best at 1 or lower). I had blood work checked by my ENDO and ObGYN and I am going through menopause at pretty much all hit me like a perfect storm. I also have high cholesterol and was dehydrated. No clue how I could have been dehydrated at the time because I was drinking 12 16 ounce bottles of water a day.

After nearly a year of this I was put on the patch 2 weeks ago because my mood and pain was horrible. I didn’t want to do anything. The holidays made me even more stressed and depressed and I have small kids and huge family we host. I didn’t have it in me to want to do anything. Totally unlike me!

Before the patch (just two weeks ago) I was on a complete gluten, dairy, soy free diet. Basically a Candida diet. Stopped everything including wine for 3 + months. I lost so much weight (I was 108 lbs and I’m 5’.5” tall). My OBGYN and Gastrointerologist told me to start eating and was out in the patch right away. The lowest dose COMDI Patch for the next 6 months. I don’t want this for years but I felt so bad I was desperate. I feel a mental difference for sure! I handled the holidays and enjoyed normal food and wine.

Besides pain I have from other issues (neck and back issues, deviated septum, TMJ and GERD). I had an endoscopy last month and all normal. Thought I had thrush and Candida but told I did not.

After I started the patch my brain fog has cleared. I did start Gluten and everything I stopped again just to gain weight. My family was scared of how thin I was looking. I lost weight from Hyper but my low was 116 and my normal now should be 125-130lbs. 108 was pretty scary.

Today I start meds for high cholesterol (runs in my family after menopause). I also learned drinking water too fast and too much can run right through you causing me not to retain it and together with my barely eating diet made everything run through me.. Stay hydrated but don’t gulp it and sip throughout the day.

So, I started eating Gluten and then after a few days I began feeling bad. Not bad mentally (the patch I believe is helping) but I felt the inflammation and joint pains like I felt when first diagnosed. I gained a few pounds but think I am going to limit my gluten now. I agree gluten can cause a whole host of issues for those of us with thyroid problems.

I’m not sure if anything I write can help you. But since we are close in age, Graves and in remission I wanted to share my experience to see if it can help you!

Be well!
