Thyroid and Vitamin results in, would love to hear what you think

Hi all,

I’ve been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s and after recently posting for the first time, I was advised to post again after doing additional tests. I now have the results and would love to have your input on what to do next. I’ve been reading and reading the posts on this forum, so feel a lot better educated now than a few weeks ago, but still have a few questions on how to proceed.

Here are my results:

20 July 2017 (previous)

TSH 5.48 (0.27-4.2)

FT3 5.9 (3.1-6.8)

FT4 14.8 (12-22)

ATG 64.0 (0-115)

AntiTPO 204.9 (0-34)

Also Vit B12 629 (211-911)

CRP 1.1 (0.1-5)

26 Oct 2017 (new)

TSH 4.19 (0.27-4.2)

FT3 5.77 (3.1-6.8)

FT4 16.2 (12-22)

TT4 140 (59-154)

ATG 27.8 (0-115)

AntiTPO 161 (0-34)

ACTIVE Vit B12 177 (25.10-165)

Folate 19.98 (2.91-50)

Vit D (25OH) 123 (50-200)

Ferritin 164 (13-150) – as this is slightly over, I’ll be doing a full iron panel shortly

CRP 1.4 (0-5)

For both tests blood was drawn first thing in the morning after fasting, although 1 hour apart (8am on 20/7, 9am on 26/10). The test were done in two different labs (but they use the same ranges!)

I don’t take any medication for my thyroid.

I have also been supplementing for the last 3-5 months with:

Vit D3 4000iu/day

B12 (methylcobalamin) 1000ug/day

Selenium 200ug/day

Solgar Wild Alaskan Full Spectrum Omega 2/day (so far this has reduced my cholesterol from 5.4 to 4.7 (3.5-5))

I would really appreciate your input on the following:

- As my Vit D levels are good, should I continue supplementing at 4000iu or reduce down to 2000iu? I can retest in 3 months, but really don’t want it to drop.

- I want to add Vit K2 and Magnesium. Research on the forum suggests 100mcg/day for K2 and 200mg/day Magnesium before bed. Does that sound ok?

- Looks like I need to reduce my level of B12, so should I now take 1000ug every other day? (I could buy a smaller dosage, but still have a lot of the current pills left!)

- Is it essential to add B Complex to this?

- And does anybody supplement with additional Thiamine?? It doesn’t seem to be mentioned on the forum, but the Thyroid Pharmacists suggests 600mg per day.

And finally, what do I do about my thyroid! My TSH and TPO antibodies appear to have gone down, but I know they can fluctuate. FT3 and FT4 are towards the upper end of the range, so seem ok at the moment. My vitamins are mostly ok. I feel well and don’t have any discernible symptoms except cold hands and feet, high cholesterol and occasional tummy aches (might not from Hashi's?). I have just gone gluten and soya free and plan to retest everything in 3 months. Based on advice from my previous post and my own conclusions, my current thinking is not to jump to taking Levo and to see if a change in diet and fine-tuning supplementation can make a difference. I can then reassess my position in Jan 2018. Sound sensible?

I know this is a lot of questions, and that everyone’s different, so please don’t feel like you have to answer all of them - but it would be so good to hear your opinions.

THANK YOU!

Thanks Treepie . Nanaedake and SlowDragon - since you were so helpful last time, any thoughts? I’d especially appreciate your insight on the vitamin front.

I’ve been researching and researching, but would love to get some input. Thank you :-)

If it were me I would reduce my vitamin D to a maintenance dose as you suggest 2000iu would seem sensible. If you retest in 3 months you'll know if it's staying steady, falling or still rising. Then adjust again if necessary.

I buy the magnesium citrate powder so I can adjust the amount. I take 2.5gms daily or adjust to less when I need to. It can affect the bowels.

My vitamin D contains K2 so not sure what quantity as a separate dose. You should take a B complex if supplementing with B12 as it will keep the B's balanced. I think I would try dosing alternate days with vitamin B12 as your levels are good now. If you retest in a few months you'll know if you need to dose daily again. If you've increased your B12 stores then it may stay good unless you have problems absorbing it from your food.

I agree with all Nanaedake has said

Personally I would definitely hold off starting Levo.

It appears your have made enormous improvements, hopefully enough to heal the gut and stop it in its tracks 😀

Definitely stick at Gluten free for 3-6 months. If it helps stay on it

Soya free, try to do permanently. Including soya lecithin (I noticed my hands & feet got warmer when I finally cut soya lecithin)

Try to add one thing at a time, so you can see if you notice any effects.

Magnesium, lots of us use Calm vitality magnesium powder. Cheap and easy to use, can start on very low dose.

Vitamin K2, just taking 2 or 3 times a week should be fine if only on maintenance dose of vitamin D.

I would think just a good vitamin B complex is enough. You probably don't need thiamine as well

Your ferritin is high. If supplementing, stop. It can be high due to Hashimoto's (mine always is)

Interesting the Full spectrum Omega.

Cholesterol lower is a good indicator you're going in right direction

I would add a daily vitamin C

So so helpful, THANK YOU! The tip from both of you re magnesium powder is very useful. I’ll add Vitamin C and yes, have decided to stop eating soya too. Not supplementing ferritin so it probably is Hashimotos, although will know more when Iron Panel comes through. I’m enjoying being GF so far - it’s encouraging me to cook more. Solgar Full Spectrum definitely helps, can’t think of any reason why my cholesterol would drop. And re thyroid, improvement appears to be simply from supplementation - no change in diet or anything else until now.

Thanks again for your help, much appreciated. :-)

Yes, as SlowDragon says, vitamin C is good. I take 1000mcg daily. I think it helps to keep stomach acidity more balanced.
