I'm on my 5th month of forced FODMAP diet. I really did a number on my stomach. I was always having problems with constipation. I always thought it was part of the FM and ibs together and just having regular food intolerances, such as gluten and soy. I bought some kefir drinking yogurt and it worked for me to go to the bathroom. So I thought, wow! I'll just drink a little of this every morning. Without realizing that I am lactose intolerant. I read that even though there are probiotics in the kefir, there isn't enough to break down lactose. Good to know. Then I bought some lactase and I had already started doing the FODMAP thing. There is manitol in it. That's off FODMAP diet. Why would they put that in something for breaking down foods correctly, when actually it makes it worse? So, I been trying to increase eating other foods and I find myself back to bathroom issues. How do I get myself back to regular foods? I can do with out garlic and onion and there are ways around it, like doing oils, but I'm afraid to eat salmon and other things, such as peas. I believe these are safe, but even in moderation, it's back to the bathroom. How do I get back to eating for nutrients?

What comes after FODMAP diet?
I'm afraid I can't help you but I share your grief! Currently trying work out what food is left while trying to vaguely follow FODMAP and Bladder Pain Syndrome diet. The only things that tend not to hurt are carbs, very hard to eat healthily when so much fruit and veg is off limits.
Last time I had really bad IBS I just stopped eating completely for 3 days and that actually seemed to fix it for a while at least. The BPS seems to be very bad at night and then that seems to trigger IBS for day. It's exhausting.
It seems we all have too go threw trial and error to succeed getting our stomachs to settle, medication can play a part in constipation. I do eat bio yogurts they are good. Just wondering if you could see a nutritionist for some advice or your doctors surgery could hook you up with somebody threw the NHS xx
Hello Tjocean - you might find some help on here

It is a tricky one, as I find I have never been able to re-introduce food. The Fodmap diet is only supposed to me for a short time and not to be used indefinately but I still to this day can not have Garlic, Onion, Leeks, Apples etc - I use Mebeverine to help with the spasms and what I also find helpful is Silicolgel - it helps calms things down, and supplements to top up what I am not getting from such a restricted diet
Best wishes

Hi. Same sort of problems here so am frequently returning to a low fodmap diet and yes, fed up with food manufacturers who have jumped on the fodmap bandwagon and not read the small print. - I think the internet too is probably being sanitized to prevent us from being able to find out how the now too readily accepted 'Doc-pharm' remedies mess up the balance of our unique body systems. You type something in and somehow your question is re-interpreted though still cleverly using most of your own words. My chiropractor who has real healing skills suggested I try L Plantarum and my son, got me some L Gasseri to get my bowel working better. I am finding I am now drawn to use them because something in my mind/body says 'ok'. This is the same for Weleda Digestion Calming drops which have made a difference too, especially in the middle of the night. I have kefir made from coconut milk and that seems to be positive. - For about six months now I have been using goats milk to help raise serotonin at night. I am lactose intolerant too but this seems to be tolerated by my got. - Meanwhile, I am trying to keep food diaries but am often too tired to fill them in. Lots of people on this site talk about sugar and I agree with them that it is best avoided. I am sure you already do that. - The fodmaps diet advice does not seem to say much or anything, about lectins. I'm sure that is another part of the puzzle.... As for nutrients ... My son has been encouraging me to take NMN (though morning only I have decided and it's worth reading up on), and oil based vitamin C. - Vit C anyway has potential for gut clearing taken with water too, but in very much larger amounts than normally suggested. -(NB You can't just go out somewhere without immediate access to a loo if you do try it.) B12 at least by midday I find helpful too... But what is it about fibro that makes us too tired some days/or nights, to reach for those remedies we know will help a little bit more than doing nothing? - So anyway, you, Tj, appear to have been going for your misbehaving gut bacteria. To me that seems like a good intuitive and commonsense approach. Keep trying and good luck with it.
Hi im on fodmap diet now so many foods i cant eat , i have gastritis ibs and gallstones so makes it even more stressful, i hope you soon get a diet suitable for you xx
chia seeds can aid constipation, they are reported to consume up to 27 x their volume, just a tea spoon in the morning with a class of water is the recipe for me. should be soaked first to absorb water. here is a link about them. They have many health benefits too. I also avoid any food that has a high GI or not natural ingredients, especially artificial sugars, aspartame and the like. beautyepic.com/chia-seeds-f...
I have never heard of fodmap. What is it? I'm relatively new to fibro but I know food triggers my bad stomach and bowel. I don't know how to work out what though! Xx
This illness has been a bit of a trial and error for me, research and trial into Fibromyalgia are scarcely researched. IBS is one of the common symptoms, It seems that the
The term FODMAPS is an acronym that stands for: F ermentable O ligosaccharides, D isaccharides, M onosaccharides, and P olyols. They are a collection of poorly absorbed foods that may trigger IBS. Yes, I know the pains you are talking about pretty harsh at times, I kept a food diary and found that wheat was a big issue, I stopped eating wheat. keep to nuts and seeds (anything but peanuts, they are not a nut) no legumes. Means carefully checking all ingredients of anything you eat. once you work out your food tolerance, The change in IBS pain was amazing for me.😊
