Vitamin D result is (finally) in . . .

I was tested just over 2 weeks ago for: B12, folic acid and vitamin D.

I got my B12 result (1001) and folic acid (5.4) over a week ago.

Today, after speaking to a Drs secretary at RNHRD in Bath I got my vitamin D result and I AM DEFICIENT - my result was 35 nMol/L. A good level is apparently around 200 nMol/L.

The Dr at RNHRD will be writing to my surgery and my GP recommending I start "replacement" (this was the term used by the secretary) - I'm assuming she meant D3.

I've made a Drs appointment for next week to allow time for the letter to filter through the system. I guess another week or so won't matter seeing as I've probably been deficient for a long time.

I'm really hoping that once I start treatment, which I know can take a few weeks or months to take effect, that I'll start feeling a lot better. It really does come to something when you're actually pleased something is abnormal but that it's also treatable and can be rectified!

The other thing is that it was me, after doing lots of research and googling that requested the vitamin D blood test. I wonder how many others are suffering as a result of what I consider to be a simple blood test?!

my g.p. Saud vitamin d blood test was too expensive so sent me for calcium levels and liver function. I am going to make an appointment when I get these tests back and see someone else. I can hardly put 1 foot in front of the other with fatigue and can't function much at all. brain fog is getting worse.

Try and pursue it if you can! Good Luck x

Are you drinking half of your weight in ounces of water? You sound dehydrated.

Hi my last result was 52.1 and was told by my doctor's that it was normal xx

40-50 is normal so yours is good anything below 25 is bad and you need high dose which Dr gives you but after level up you have to get your own. I got a spray as with tummy troubles though better to get it absorbed. It tastes nice too👍

40-50 is still too low (shows as varying shades of blue depending on the figure). I may see if I can post it on a separate thread / new post.

Just looked it up again on English medical website and 50ng/ml is the top of the good range this relates to my blood test sheet from Doctors were we was down to 20 so was put on 50,000 units of D3 for six weeks .So it depends which reading unit they use to work it out I believe 🤪mind bobbling I think they do it so you can not work it out🤬

I have been ill for nine years, steadily declining with each passing year. One of my illnesses is an inflammatory blood disorder, in which my doctors won’t do anything further, but the radiologist/doctor noted it may be MDS (preleukemia). Looking at my blood level results, he is probably right. There were so many abnormalities on my results. I was given Morpine for pain (low dose) but no further testing despite the radiologist wanted the test repeated in three weeks. But my PCP did not follow up on that. Six months later I asked my neurologist to request another blood test (peripheral blood smear) and the results were worse. That was about nine months ago. My new PCP ordered some blood work on me, and the results were much worse, and the lab told me my blood levels were critical. I got a copy of the results. My new PCP will not tell me what all those bad results mean, though I know enough to know what it could be and I am getting very sick. Does anyone have any idea what I should do?

Also, on the Vitamin D question, it is important you get that resolved. A lot of women are Vitamin D deficient. Just sitting in the sun a few minutes a day will help, as will as eating foods rich in Vitamin D. And as you mentioned, Vitamin D3 may help. My Vitamin D level was zero (yes zero), so I was put on Vitamin D3 5000 IU daily. Nothing - did nothing which I do not understand. I have had only one cavity ten years ago. Suddenly about a year ago my enamel started coming off a few teeth, and now the teeth in my right lower jaw have literally almost fallen out or decayed most of the way with no pain. I know it is related to the Vitamin D deficiency. But I have other illnesses which may be affecting it. I bet Vitamin D3 will really help you. You might try sitting in the sun a few minutes a day. I am glad you are trying it, and you hang in there. God bless.

You poor thing I really feel for you , can't believe that your pcp didn't follow up , I hate it when you see the results but have no understanding of them.

ng/ml is an American measurement as far as I'm aware. I'm on a vitamin D deficiency group via Facebook and they have a pinned post showing levels in a colour coded chart form. It shows 80ng/ml as a good target and the corresponding UK measurement is 200 nMol/L. From around 325 the colour changes to orange and then red at 500+

Vitamin D is tested on basic yearly blood panels. Get a new doctor.

My body doesn’t hold on to any vit d so I constantly have to take vit d. At one point I had none in my system. Once they get your level up just take over the counter vit d to keep levels up.

howdy

I had pains for a years and only recently was this attributed to a vit D deficiency, mine was as low as 19 which aint ideal - I am on week 5 of 50000 unit tablets before a year of daily 1000 unit tablets.

my issue is that my treatment has coincided with the better weather and a new job that actually lets me see daylight - so while I am feelin better, I dunno how much I can put this down to the sun and how much is the pills............

point is - I am feeling better, so you should as well.

might move to spain in winters lol

My vitamin D level has been low for a couple of years (that I know of). My rheumatologist told me that a deficiency in vitamin D aggravates fibromyalgia so my therapy is used as pain relief too. I take 1000u daily, It helps but I still have pain. It might not be a cure but hope it helps you.

I'm hoping that once it gets into my system, I'll get some decent pain relief.

I know just what you mean but you feel so much better once you get that treated I’m having mine done next Friday and like you I’m hoping it comes back that I need it . X🤗😇

Good Luck. Let us know how you get on. I still find it hard to believe that Drs and medical professionals didn't even think to test or consider vitamin deficiencies!

The dr said that she wasn’t sure if the lab would do it but she was happy to try for me . I think resources are short but someone like me with all I have wrong with me I never go to Drs it’s been 3 and a half years since last appointment . I tend to put up with all the pain and everything because what’s the point . Xx🤗😘🦋😇

"Deficient" of "vitamin D" . . . . . ehhhhh, Tigerlily72 ? ? ?

Hmmm, . . . . . just hold on - NOT so fast !

A 'deficiency' and a 'deficiency disease' are terms used with TRUE vitamins ( - like vitamin C is in humans . . . . . . but not in some animals which can make their own !)

There IS a very credible view that "vitamin D" is NOT such a substance, and was MISNAMED a vitamin in 1928 & remains 'sociologically classified' as such - but NOT scientifically !

If the molecule from which is the active metabolite ( - called calcitriol) is made HAD been CORRECTLY re-classified as a precursor to its prohormone ( - called calcidiol) THEN 'vitamin D' would NOT be available to purchase OTC ( = 'over the counter') without a prescription ( - & certainly not in the larger doses). Generally hormones and precursors to prohormones do require a prescription, as they are POTENT substances, capable of causing harm when used incorrectly.

So, talking about a 'deficiency' of 'vitamin D' - a common place occurrence in the UK - is REALLY getting simple biochemical matters CONFUSED. Drs do not for example ( - strictly speaking) talk of a 'deficiency' of thyroxine ( - the prohormone for the active thyroid hormone T3).

For your & other readers' interest: fearlessparent.org/suppleme... - worth reading SLOWLY and carefully ( - and ignoring the lengthy comments section too in this article).

The way to determine whether there is AN ISSUE with this hormonal system ( - as the above article introduces) is to measure levels of BOTH the prohormone ( - the calcidiol) and the active hormone ( - the calcitriol). The latter is practically never measured in the UK for the purpose of checking whether there is an on-going immune response ( - which is what makes us FEEL ill).

PLEASE take ( - or send) a copy of the article to your GP or consultant, is one important suggestion - I hope one of them will READ and UNDERSTAND this ESTABLISED, and reported biochemistry.

Best wishes,

Sid :~)
