Dementia adverts

Does anyone else feel upset when hearing the dementia advert that keeps saying you die again and again and again? This is how I feel physically nearly every day at one or more points as the extreme fatigue, shooting pains in my chest, and dizziness/brain fog all strike at once. I shout ‘shut up’ at the radio and turn down the volume. I really can’t stand it, its very upsetting .

Whatever their worthy message regarding their dreadful disease I think they need to consider others too.

I understand where you're coming from with the Dementia advert, it can be very upsetting. But I guess that's the point. I have fibro and get the pain and cognitive issues that go with it, many times breaking down into 'Why me' mode. So I really do get it.

But my mum has Dementia and is now living her final chapter of her life in a nursing home. And there is nothing more upsetting than walking into a room to a loved one and they don't know who you are.

My mum, as the advert says, is dying over and over again and it's heart wrenching. All I want to do is make her better but I can't, and that is the worse feeling ever.

So yes, I do feel your pain Fibrooh, but honestly in my opinion Dementia needs all the publicity it can get to help find a cure for such a horrible disease.

I agree with everything you say. It is a dreadful disease. The only thing I don’t know is whether it is the sufferer who feels that way or the relative? For me, selfishly I guess, its my own fear I’m dying and this time it will happen that frightens me so much and it does happen again and again and again, its like groundhog day. That’s why hearing the words ‘you die again and again’ are so upsetting.

Perhaps they should change the wording in the ad to “to your loved ones you die again and again”?

I agree. From my own experience although it's the sufferer that is dying over and over again, it's the relative/friend/carer that has to watch it happen.

My mum is often emotional, and I often wonder what's going on in her head as she drifts into her own world. All I see is how scared and confused she can become.

Saying that, we do share smiles now and again over silly things which I try to cling onto.

It can be hard holding someone's hand and comforting them when you're in so much pain and in a bad head space yourself, but it is what it is and I do what I can.

We can only deal with the hand we're dealt, and fibro is a pretty raw deal, but being aware of these different illnesses and helping people if and when I can is how I get through.
