After doing some research and a bit of googling, I've discussed this with my GP and I've just had a blood test (last Friday) to check for the following:
Vitamin D deficiency
Vitamin B12 deficiency
Folic Acid
I have a lot of the symptoms of vitamin D deficiency and also B12. I'm hoping the surgery will have had my results back by tomorrow.
Can anyone tell me the following please:
Vitamin D - what level is deficient, what is low/border line and what should an optimal level be?
From what I've read so far, I think 200 mmols and above is normal?
Vitamin B12 - again, what is deficient, low/borderline and what is optimal?
I don't know much about folic acid but if anyone does, any info is very much appreciated. I want to be armed and ready when I get my results! I'm fairly convinced I'm low in at least one of them.
Thank you π x

Hi there tigerlily72 I have had a battery of tests done lately and going back for more tomorrow. If you ask the doctor for a print out of your results it will show you what your levels are and in [ ]
What the excepted levels should be. I had pages of the results only last week and that's how they read. I hope this helps. xx
75-100 preferred range 50-75 sufficient range 25-50 Mild deficiency 12.5-25 Moderately deficiency >12.5 Severe deficiency. For Vitamin D
My vit D was 12 so been on tablets for over year ... had loading dose of 20000 units for 2 weeks and now 800 daily ... I had so much pain in legs muscles and slept a lot .... I already take folic acid 5mg daily as on methotraxate injections ... it helps your cells ... xx
They should come back with their own ranges, but you might well need to be on the high end of that . Eg Vit D3 might be ok 50-60, but you might feel best at 100 plus even 150 or more. B12 at least over 500, perhaps better at 550. I notice you have been checked for folic acid- this is slightly confusing as folic acid is often said to be same as folate(B9) which it isn't - folate needs to be at least half way thru range. How about other vitamins/minerals eg Ferritin : minimum 70 but 100-130 best for women. If need Vit D add Vit K2(mk7) cofactors( helps D to go to bones/teeth rather than in blood/tissues), and magnesium. Want more info google Vitamin D Council, and 'Could it be B12?' By Sally M. Pacholok( think I've spelt surname right).
I was given folic acid to help with iron deficiency. After further testing it showed vitamin B12 was needed so I could absorb iron from my diet so I no longer need folic acid. The two are linked.
Vit D deficiency is below 30. Iβm not sure what the borderline is but if I had to take an educated guess I would say 30-35ml Iβm not sure what the optimal range is but my doctors are happy for the range of 50β - 60βs range.
Vit B12 Iβm not educated to say anything about Vit. B12 levels. Folic acid level my husband was low on his folic acid. I want to say he was at 18 and Iβm thinking that 30 and above is normal. I am going on his last lab report. With the fibro fog and having the crud may be effecting my memory recall. I hope I was of some help. π€ππ¦
Thanks, that seems to tie in with what others are saying re: vit D deficiency levels as I think I had 25 and below in my head as fairly deficient. And yes, you have been very helpful and given me clear info. Thanks again, much appreciated.
Still waiting on my results unfortunately. I'm hoping the surgery will have got them back tomorrow as I hate waiting. Note to self: Don't have a blood test on a Friday! π
