Good morning, does anyone on here take naproxen daily? And have found it safe to do so, I've been prescribed it for osteoarthritis and after reading about some of the side effects, should I take it occasionally. I take amitripyline for my fibromyalgia. Kind regards

Hi there, I have just been given Naproxen and after a day I was taken off them as I was in a 15 out of 10 pain. So please be aware of the side effects. I am also on Anatryptaline at night

I have been on Naproxen for over 10 years now.

It can cause kidney and heart failure if taken in large doses or for longer periods of time.

I am now having a lot of issues with my kidney function along with re occurring kidney stones. I also have Kidney disease.

I would personally steer clear. If I knew then what I know now I would never have taken them, although the doctors disagree that Naproxen has caused these issues.

Hi Nelly, I just posted my experience with Celebrex knocking my kidney function down to 42. It took stopping the Celebrex, stopping everything that contained caffeine, increasing my water intake, and changing my diet which brought it back up to 78. See my post below but I was diagnosed with kidney disease 2. But now don’t believe I have it anymore as long as I don’t drink caffeinated drinks and drink lots of water along with a healthy diet. I wasn’t aware that it could affect your heart too. I was having abnormal EKGs but that has returned to normal now. I agree with you to stay clear of anti inflammatory drugs.

Wow, well done you. I’m a coffee holic. Never thought it could be the coffee of caffeinated drinks. Maybe I will try a decent decaf .

I was prescribed it for severe costochondritis pain as part of my fibro condition...Another clinician, a neurologist I see about my v frequent migraines told me to steer clear and thought it was the cause of my migraines!!!

It's a minefield out there, isn't it???

I've had to wait nearly 4months for my costochondritis pain to ease away after a flare up... This condition is a nightmare!!!

I'm sorry you're in this dilemma...

The lady above is quite a warning for us all?

Take care, now, Wx

I was on naproxen for years but have recently been taken off them by the cardiologist after taking a heart attack, I also had 2 stents fitted!

I don’t smoke or drink and eat relatively healthy so the heart attack was a shock for me. The cardiologist said it was probably the inflammation that caused it.

I also now have liver and kidney problems that have been detected during my cardiac rehabilitation.

They haven’t said what has caused this though and I didn’t know naproxen had these side effects.

I have an appointment for rheumatology in a few weeks so hoping that they can prescribe something in replacement as my inflammation levels have been so high and I have been in so much pain since stopping taking naproxen.

I have osteoarthritis & fibromyalgia, I take a naproxen & amitriptyline and 1x paracetamol & cocodamol at night & this seems to help immensely while I sleep and helps me get through till about 1-2pm then I top up with paracetamol & co-codamol I try to keep my meds to an absolute minimum to try and avoid any other side effects, hope this helps you 😁

I take naproxen for my migraines, always with Omeprazole to protect my stomach. It's a nasty drug, I personally wouldn't take it everyday. I have chronic migraines so I can't take it more than 6 days a month anyway. My friend used to not take the Omeprazole because it made her feel unwell, she now has serious stomach problems that caused by the naproxen. I can't remember if it was an ulcer or what but I know the damage is permanent and she was in hospital a long time.

I was put on dickafenic here in UK when I had bad inflammation..then I was told couldn't have it By more as bad for heart. My leg swollen up and went numb and doc gave me naproxen instead..I felt really weird after a day on it and a rash came up and I got palpitations.a friend said go to docs straight away I think your having a reaction..so I was taken off it and told to write down in future not to be allowed it. Pain clinic also said all medications I was on could damage my other organs so could only take them twice a week and go on bed rest the rest of the time if in pain and take co-dydramol instead..I occasionally take ibrofrufen, but nothing seems to help when I get an inset if the inflammation..

Occasionally and always after Omeprazole. I use max strength ibuprofen and Flexiseq gel instead - more effective for me

I was on it but stopped now as it's not good long term but I must say it's very good for pain relief have you been given ozmpersole too sorry not sure how to spell it x

Hi Princess61

I took Naproxen for many years and did find it helpful at the time, although I was told that it can affect kidney function if you take it long term, although I didn’t have any kidney problems as I had been taking it for many years I asked for an alternative but this was also due to my condition worsening. Naproxen is an Anti Inflammatory and although I have osteoarthritis I also have nerve damage so I now take Gabapentin. I hope this is of some help, good luck x

I have naproxen very occasionally- always with omeprazole. They can be effective but if you are taking them regularly I would keep checking with the doctor to see if they are affecting your kidneys. Personally I find lidocaine patches suit me better. Hope you find something to help your pain xx

Hi, I take naproxen for arthritis, I don’t take it every day though, only when the pain is really bad. I always take Lanzaprozol to protect my stomach and havn’t had any problems .

Good morning. Naproxen is very helpful in conjunction with other medication and can help with nerve pain.

Have you been prescribed imeprazol to take along side it. This helps protect your stomach. It's very important that you do. If you end up taking them for a long period of time, keep an eye on any discomfort in your stomach. I took it for years and had no problems with it at all until I started to get a raw feeling in my stomach. I have no long term effects from it, I just had to change to something else.

I would speak to your GP again because this drug is good but long term creates issues. I was on high dose for many years without understanding the side effects and the impact on my organs and my tummy.

After being on 1500 my a day . I dropped to 500mg a day which has improved my tummy issues and weight loss. I am about to withdraw this one table a day by taking it every other day until I am off this drug all together. I regret taking it for so long but no one advised me of the risks to long term use of Naproxen.

My GP never made me aware of any risks over the years and therefore I just carry on. My advise would be back to see the GP talk through the risks and see if he can recommend a different drugs to support your osteoarthritis. I too have arthritis and use a ten machine which I wear to help with pain.

Look at your diet as there are foods which can make you feel worse when having arthritis.

Take magnesium vitamins and Zine and vitamin D .

Rub warm oils into your painful muscles. You can also use magnesium spray which is also very good for pain.

Research self-help arthritis because there's lot of information to support you and how to make changes to your lifestyle it's very useful to understand little changes can make such a difference. My life has so improved since I made a changes to my drugs and lifestyle and diet. Hope some of these suggestions help you. Good luck 👍 take care xx

I take naproxen daily but you have to be careful with it as it gives you constipation if you have too often! i don't think it helps a great deal with the pain I wanted to go on something stronger but the doctors refused so I self medicate with CBD

I take 500mg twice a day and have done for a couple of years since they wouldn’t let me take diclofenic anymore which really help, you mustn’t take Naproxen on a empty stomach though and I take 75mg of Lansoprazole daily to protect my stomach, I’ve not had any problems with it and definitely suffer if I should forget to take it, so it does work not as much as I would like but better than nothing

Good luck

if you do take it you need to be taking a stomach protector like omeprazole. I wasn’t told this and ended up with an ulcer ❤️

Better off taking tramadol safer on your stomach. Or try marijuana

Hi Princess61,

Taking the naproxen daily you would need to monitor is your kidney function levels. I was taking Celebrex for many years. When my doctor checked my kidney function it was down to 42. She had me stop the Celebrex which brought it up to 48. I had to stop drinking my weekly glass of ice tea, Sunday morning cup of coffee and increase my water intake but over a few years it came back up to 78. I then thought I could drink a 1/2 cup of coffee 2 Sundays a month but it knocked it down to 56. After stopping the coffee it has come back up 74. No kidney diseases runs in my family. So other than that it was helping. So just make sure your doctor is checking your kidney function levels regularly.

Thank you all for your helpful, lovely comments, it's nice to know we're not alone. I think I will take it only when my pain is unbearable, I only take it on a full stomach, but have also been prescribed omprazole which was I was told to take if my stomach is empty. Thank you all again🤗x

personally I can’t take this medication at all, gives me terrible acid, even though I take a stomach protector (esomeprazole) I used to take disclofenac but that is no longer prescribed routinely, I would only take this when having a flare up and not routinely for pain management. Just my experience, everyone reacts differently. It’s difficult finding a balance 😞

You should not take Naproxen daily unless you are also taking a proton pump inhibitor like lansoprazole. Proton pump inhibitors reduce the amount of stomach acid your stomach produces and also protect your stomach. You NEED to take these daily if you are taking Naproxen daily because Naproxen is extremely harsh on the stomach and if you do not take anything to protect your stomach it can become inflamed resulting in gastritis.
