Advice on Blood results please?

Hi, I'm not diagnosed with any thyroid problems but have had numerous blood tests over the last 4 years because of severe menopause symptoms that have not responded to HRT. Would you be able to have a look and see what you think please? I have also included some of the vitamins tested.

Are your B12 results taken after you started a B complex or before? Your level dropped quite a lot.

Which B complex are you taking?

Your thyroid hormone levels are very low but your TSH doesn't seem to be reflecting this.

Its possible to have secondary hypothyroidism where the TSH doesn't respond properly to low thyroid hormone levels. Many GPs don;t understand or know about this.

What time of day have you been testing? Recommended timing is at 9am or earlier to show highest TSH.

Have you had thyroid antibodies testing? NHS only tests TPO but privately you can also test Tg antibodies.

See link for companies offering private blood tests & discount codes, some offer a blood draw service at an extra cost. thyroiduk.org/testing/priva...

There is also a new company offering walk in& mail order blood tests in London, Kent, Sussex & Surrey areas. Check to see if there is a blood test company near you. onedaytests.com/products/ul...

Only do private tests on a Monday or Tuesday to avoid postal delays.

Don't use Monitor My Health as thats an NHS lab and dont test Tg.

Randox is another company. probably the cheapest.

Vitamin D should be around 100 - 150. Buy one that includes vit K2 to help it go to your bones. Some are available in oil or you can take it with an oily meal for better absorption. Many members like the ‘Better You’ range of mouth sprays that contain both bit D & K2. Use this calculator to work out how much to take to get your level to 100-150.grassrootshealth.net/projec...

You could ask for a thyroid scan to see if theres any damage to your thyroid causing low levels.

Hi, Thank you for replying. I started a B complex last year so yes since Ive been supplimenting its dropping. Boots Vit B complex.

I tested at 3pm. The Thyroid test in Feb 23 was at 08:25 am TSH 1.87.

Thyroid Antibodies tested once in Jan 22, Thyroglobulin Antibodies 10.1, range <115, Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies <9, range < 34.

I will buy Vit D

I would like a scan but cant imagine my GP with do it. When the GP has lasted tested my thyroid when I started with eczema for the first time in my life they only tested TSH, it was in Aug 22 TSH 0.96. Can you get the scans privately?

Many thanks

Ju

Yes you can get a private thyroid scan, not too expensive, phone around. thyroiduk.org/testing/other...

This would assess if theres any damage to your thyroid caused by an autoimmune attack and look for nodules.

The B complex that you have is quite low dose. SlowDragon has given some recommendations that would bring your level up better and improve how you feel.

Never test in the afternoon, always early morning. Book test as far ahead as you can for best choice of times.

Sometimes in autoimmune hypothyroidism antibodies never show as positive, thats where the scan comes in and can show damage to the thyroid.

As your latest results show your FT4 below range and FT3 bottom of range you could push for a referral to an Endocrinologist. Try and get them to think about secondary hypo.

Vitamin D 51.2

Too low

Aiming for minimum of 80nmol

How much vitamin D have you been taking

Why are you taking calcium

GP will often only prescribe to bring vitamin D levels to 50nmol.

Some areas will prescribe to bring levels to 75nmol or even 80nmol

leedsformulary.nhs.uk/docs/...

GP should advise on self supplementing if over 50nmol, but under 75nmol (but they rarely do)

mm.wirral.nhs.uk/document_u...

But with Hashimoto’s, improving to around 80nmol or 100nmol by self supplementing may be better

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/218...

vitamindsociety.org/pdf/Vit...

Once you Improve level, very likely you will need on going maintenance dose to keep it there.

Test twice yearly when supplementing

Can test via NHS private testing service

Active B12 57.4 (37.5 - 188pmol/L)

Folate 18.8 (> 7)

MCH was slightly above range 33 pg Range ( 27-32)

medicalnewstoday.com/articl...

Causes of high MCH levels

High MCH scores are commonly a sign of macrocytic anemia. This condition occurs when the blood cells are too big, which can be a result of not having enough vitamin B12 or folic acid in the body.

A week later add a separate vitamin B Complex

Then once your serum B12 is over 500 (or Active B12 level has reached 70), you may be able to reduce then stop the B12 and just carry on with the B Complex.

Igennus B complex popular option. Nice small tablets. Most people only find they need one per day. But a few people find it’s not high enough dose

Thorne Basic B recommended vitamin B complex that contains folate, but they are large capsules. (You can tip powder out if can’t swallow capsule) Thorne can be difficult to find at reasonable price, should be around £20-£25. iherb.com often have in stock. Or try ebay

IMPORTANT......If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 7 days before ALL BLOOD TESTS , as biotin can falsely affect test results

In week before blood test, when you stop vitamin B complex, you might want to consider taking a separate folate supplement (eg Jarrow methyl folate 400mcg) and continue separate B12
