I am trying to work on my ferritin but finding it hard to get levels right being vegetarian I include spinich dark chocolate etc in diet can't seem to get it any higher . I have asked about T3 from endo but they said no I don't need it .Thanks for your reply 👍
Keep going with whatever you can do as a vegetarian. Maybe include orange juice and pumpkin seeds.
T3 on the NHS is a bit of a lottery unfortunately. Really depends who your local Endo is and what area you live in. There is the option of seeing a private Endo, depends a lot if you can afford it which is terrible.
👍 thanks I don't know what I would have done without this forum I know I have improved since joining and following advice from here but it's still a work in progress as it is for all of us 🙏
Serum ferritin level is the biochemical test, which most reliably correlates with relative total body iron stores. In all people, a serum ferritin level of less than 30 micrograms/L confirms the diagnosis of iron deficiency.
Look at increasing iron rich foods in diet
Eating iron rich foods like liver or liver pate once a week plus other red meat, pumpkin seeds and dark chocolate, plus daily orange juice or other vitamin C rich drink can help improve iron absorption
This is interesting because I have noticed that many patients with Hashimoto’s disease and hypothyroidism, start to feel worse when their ferritin drops below 80 and usually there is hair loss when it drops below 50.
Thyroid disease is as much about optimising vitamins as thyroid hormones
Never supplement iron without doing full iron panel test for anaemia first and retest 3-4 times a year if self supplementing. It’s possible to have low ferritin but high iron
We have received further information the lab about ferritin reference ranges. They confirm that they are sex dependent up to the age of 60, then beyond the age of 60 the reference range is the same for both sexes:
Males 16-60: 30-400 ug/L
Female's: 16-60: 30-150
Both >60: 30-650
The lower limit of 30 ug/L is in accordance with the updated NICE guidance and the upper limits are in accordance with guidance from the Association of Clinical Biochemists. ‘
Thanks for this . I am trying to improve ferritin levels as I think that is the main cause of my symptoms . Gut issues have disappeared so I am pleased about that just need to keep working on the ferritin .
Sorry you are feeling unwell. Your TSH is very low, suppressed even. This means your thyroid levels are going higher. Your free thyroxine is also going up to the higher range which is evidence of this.
My TSH went to 0.01 and I turned thyrotoxic. You need to talk with your doctor and show them the results, a good endocrinologist can advise you.
Did you get a doctors report with your Medichecks results? If so I wonder what their take was on this.
I also have hashimotos, with auto immune thyroid. I switch at times to graves. I have markers for both and fortunately a good endocrinologist. Every time I get a virus i switch from hypo to hyper in the weeks following that and have to reduce medication.
Thanks for this I don't feel over medicated and the report from the doctor with the results did mention the low TSH but also said it depended on if I had symptoms of over medication . I have an appointment in 2 weeks with an endocronologist who increased my medication in September . I feel this is low sugar but I am not sure I am also trying to work on increasing my iron levels I had a bad episode during the night last night shaking and sweating and agitated I had to get up and eat something .
Yes, blood sugar is tricky when thyroid levels rise. It does sound like those are symptoms of over active which can mess with your sugar levels too.
I am exausted when I go over. Your body may be working overtime. If your are higher you will want to eat something, it’s your body needing something to use up as it’s going faster. From the shaking etc that you mention it does look that way.
I think the doc is correct on the report to flag that, I would take your latest result to your endo and I’m sure he will get you feeling better soon.
Remember when you vitamins are optimised your levels will also optimise but as you only recently had an increase in meds, it may be too much for your body.
I can’t have any supplements that contain iodine, or any food with added iodine as it totally messes with my hashimotos. So might be work checking stuff incase that can trigger it too.
Perhaps see a GP with your results if you start feeling worse in the mean time.
Yes I am taking the results with me to the appointment..trying to avoid GP who does not know enough about hashimotos and will only ask me to see endo! But it might be worth me seeing gp incase it's something unrelated if it continues 👍
Thanks it makes me feel better just having replies from this forum there is always someone there with positive feedback and I don't feel so alone which can happen during a bad episode late at night !
