Mirena pain

I started experiencing endo symptoms late last year, awful ongoing pain and tiredness which was so hard to describe and left me weak and sad. I also had rectal pain and bleeding which I didn't know could be connected until I started seeing others online who experienced the same thing. My GP prescribed the pill and painkillers until further investigations could be done.

I underwent a lap in February which confirmed I had endo and my gynaecologist inserted a mirena. I had very little consultation with her about it so apart from reading some horror stories online, I had no idea what to expect. I was also told to continue on the pill without any breaks. I was told after the procedure to take painkillers and have a heat pack handy.

For the first couple of weeks I recovered nicely, although I was constantly paranoid I was going to reject the mirena and kept running to the bathroom to check the strings (my boyfriend thought I was a crazy lady).

Then one night about three/four weeks after surgery I started experiencing rolling cramps that I honestly felt were like contractions (never having experienced contractions I'm not sure I'm exaggerating). The pain started deep in my left side and left groin/cervix, into my lower back like being stabbed repeatedly by a knife and down my left thigh. It left me feeling dizzy and nauseous and curled in the foetal position on the floor. This went on all night. I went to see the GP who said 'everything is ok'.

The pain went away and for weeks I have been mostly fine. I do however, get similar cramps sometimes after sex, especially after orgasms and sometimes I get sore and bit 'twinge-y' after riding a bike.

But overall I'm coping and it's certainly better than endo pain which was constant for me. I'm also aware that I lived with the endo pain for a relatively short time compared to many people, so really do consider myself lucky in that respect.

It's been over two months since the mirena was inserted and two days ago I started spotting. but before the spotting, the horrible 'contraction' like cramps returned and I was awake for two nights taking all the pain killers I could find. I'm still spotting and still uncomfortable with back pain and cramping (although not quite as horrendously as the first couple of nights).

I guess I just wanted to share and to reach out and see if anyone has similar experiences with the mirena (preferably with happy endings?)

I have my first post op gynaecologist appt in a cpl of weeks, where hopefully I will be reassured and given a lollipop for my bravery but right now, I'm feeling a little tired of it all.

thanks x

Thanks! I really want to stick with it as well and hope that it gets better but I can't help being anxious when it hurts like this that its being expelled or something else is wrong or that the pain will never end! Good luck with it all **hugs**

Hi, I also had episodes of severe pain with the Mirena at first. Like you, it wasn’t constant and I persisted. I’m glad I did because it passed after a few months. I then had about ten years with very little pain. Even when I had the Mirena changed, I didn’t get a reaction. So if you can put up with it, it certainly can pay off. I don’t think it necessarily means there’s anything wrong. In my case I just think my body just found it hard to tolerate at first and the contractions were my uterus trying to expel it. I found certain movements seemed to trigger it off and I avoided those for a bit. When it did happen, being still and warm for an hour (with a hot water bottle in bed) would often settle it. Tricky at work but I took a wheat bag in and used it in the microwave. It got my through it.

I hope your pain settles soon.
