Not sure if I can keep posting my Conquerer Lord of the Ring challenge walks here as this is a running group. But I kinda miss you all to nag to. So I will post this here and I'll read if you mind me posting about my walks or not. I also have some serious thinking to do on where I want to go with my running (as in to run or not to run anymore). In any case, I'll as a pic of wild hyacinths I passed this weekend and a pic of a lamb in the comments.
I have so far done a walk every day of minimum 3 km, sometimes longer. On Sunday I did a long walk with my mother between the fields at the coast, which was very nice as it had been a long time since I had been there. Well long as in 7 km, which is not long for a lot of you, but still.
Unfortunately I am currently 'ill' with an acneiform eruption on my face due to the too long use of a cortisone salve. Because of this I am trying to avoid people as much as possible, having received the ok at work to work from home this whole week. Fingers crossed it will have cleared up a bit by next week, because at the moment I even scare myself when looking in the mirror. I got antibiotic pills and antibiotic salve against it, I hope it will work fast. I do am a bit scared for my 4-weekly IV's though, as I read somewhere you can't get those when being on antibiotics and I have to take them for 2 months, so...
Anyhow, so I have been walking daily for 11 days now and have accumulated a total of 43,25 km. Whenever the weather doesn't permit it or like at this moment when I want to avoid people at all costs, I do a 3 km walk on my treadmill while listening to the audiobooks of Lord of the Rings. Long live the treadmill, while I cursed it in the past years, I now would not know where I'd be without it.
I would certainly miss your posts, and besides, I get the impression that you're a runner who's not able to run right now, rather than an ex runner.
I don't think you have to decide firmly whether you're going to run again or not, you will if you feel able in future and I don't know if that's really predictable?
Thanks and it's just that I started thinking after a fellow rheumatic patient said he used to be a runner, but that running is too hard on the joints. He walks regularly 30 km and participates regularly in the 'Deathwalk' of 100 km in 24 hours. That got me wondering if running is safe for me, even though I did not have any issues with it last year...
Keep posting - anyone who doesn't want to read can just move on. But it sounds like it's beneficial for you to post, and I think it's beneficial for us too - times where I've been on the IC it has felt difficult to come on here to see people achieving the things that they want to (mostly) and that I can't, but there must be lots of people struggling with various health or life events that cause disruptions and the support network goes both ways. So keep posting, and any pretty photos of flowers or sheep are also welcome
Please don’t stop posting! I also really love to hear and read about your LOTR walking journey!
And just to raise awareness, we do have a walking forum run by the same volunteer admin teams as Bridge and Couch ( healthunlocked.com/active10 ).
It’s a bit quieter over there, so you might want to stay here as you have your virtual buddies here as well.
I certainly am looking forward to each of your posts, as I think your challenge and choice of virtual journey is awesome!
And just to note as you mention running/walking. I recently read an article again how all evidence suggests that in general running (and regular impact) improves your bones and joints, it makes them stronger in general. So although it causes more impact, your body adapts and gets stronger usually.
Obviously it’s difficult to generalise, but I had similar concerns as I am post-menopausal and hypo and overweight. But all I can find from evidence-based articles is that it generally strengthens your body and bones. And yea hen important for me is that slow jogging is additionally gentle on bones and joints.
Keep the posts coming as long as you want. I really love reading them!
Thanks! And maybe I ought to read up on slow jogging again. Not that I run fast 😶. But maybe slow jogging is more safe? I just always compare my distance per hour and regret not doing the same distance walking compared to running. Nevertheless I must admit I do like even my walks on the treadmill, hearing Andy Serkis brabbling in my ears.
Hi keep posting keep me company in here . I asked the same question about posting and got good feedback from community saying it was ok and you are a runner too . I hope you start to feel feel better. . They say walking is better for joints not the hard impact. Your picture of hyacinths are lovely. Love the smell. Well done on your walking challenge. I’ve got to walk about 4 km for the next t 12 days of this month to complete a couple of challenges on Strava and Garmin.
Thanks and I will keep you company! I hide from people at the moment with this gremlin face I have, but doing my miles on the treadmill. 3K today as per my plan. But I might try an hour tomorrow if I feel up to it, wondering how far I will get 😁
Thanks! I will try to write some interesting things. So that won't be this week as this week will be spend on my treadmill and there is only so much you can describe about your treadmill. Stupid face-outbreak...
Keep posting Evy, I’m walking more than running at the moment and hope someone will tell me if i’m not o post walks, that does sound like you are doing ok on your treadmill which is good and audio books are great
