Treadmill + day 1 skipping

Hiya,

Today was a run day, but I did not trust the weather, so the treadmill it was. As always I Jeffed my run with 4min30 running + 0min30 walking. I decided to challenge myself a bit.

Outside I run about 7 km/h, but on the treadmill I run at 6,0 km/h. But today I decided to do 10 minutes at 6,0 km/h - 10 minutes at 6,5 km/h - 10 minutes at 7,0 km/h. Walking was as always at 4,0 km/h.

Finishing at 30 minutes, my watch (connected to a footpod on my shoe) told me I had run 3,37 km. I was happy. Until I calculated in an Excel file. If the treadmill gives the correct speed, I have run only 2,80 km. Such a desolution. But the most important thing is: I ran 30 minutes.

Afterwards I picked up my brand new jumping rope (skipping rope?) which arrived yesterday. I first changed it to the right length and then came the question: where do I do this?

I first thought in my garage, but on second look this was not possible due to a lamp + automation installation of the gate which hangs rather low. My or my folks' hallway (I live above my parents) is not wide enough. Not enough room in the bedroom. But in my living room it looked as if there might be just enough room besides the dining table if I close the kitchen door.

I first tried with my running shoes, but it felt too bulky. I decided to just try on my socks and that seems to work perfectly. Only, I regularly knock my ankles together, autch!

I found online a plan for 30 days of skipping and so I started with day 1: 20 seconds skipping - 1 minute rest - 20 seconds skipping. I'm not sure how fast you have to skip, so I just did something not slow and just below fast.

It went rather well, though I wonder if I don't jump too high. And of course, the ankles knocking against each other. It did feel like I did hardly anything, but I'll just have patience. The plan builds up, so I'll soon enough be gasping for breath. Tomorrow I'm trying with a yoga mat under me in order to protect my floor.

Cheers, Evy

I tried skipping a few years ago and quickly discovered that a) I needed to wear my sports bra while doing it and b) that it was much harder than when I was 10!

It’s great exercise though but high impact so be careful 🙀

in reply toIrishprincess

I read about the sports bra somewhere online too. I was still wearing it from my run, so that was good. But I think I will indeed wear it always.

And yes, I heard it is high impact. But I hope by following this scheme that I will build up slow enough to keep it safe.

Sounds like great fun Evy. Hope your ankles don’t get too sore though. Enjoy and let us all know how it goes 🤣🤣🤣

in reply toScruff55

My ankles did get sore yesterday, but for a different reason. When I jump I often knock them together. Also when running, I often kick with my foot against my other ankle, ending up with some skin less. I am soooo elegant 😜

Skipping is very energetic

Well done with your run and the skipping, I have a skipping rope also but I'm not very good , and like you said , difficult to find somewhere to do it , and it's exhausting 🤣

in reply toInstructor57

I am going to build it up slowly, following an online plan. Yesterday was just 2x 20 seconds jumping with 1 minute rest between. I felt as if I had done nothing. Though I'm sure I'll talk different when it builds up more!

Well done Evy! I agree, finding the right place is tricky, jumping rope needs a lot of room. And a good run too - hurrah! 😊😊😊

I’ve just got a new rope too! I went for a weighted one as apparently they are easier to control 🤷🏼‍♂️ I have the same space problem (living in a flat in central London) but I’ve found an empty car park a mile away so tomorrow I’m heading there for my first skip!

I hope it helps you - I keep hearing it’s a great workout

in reply toThommo23

Good luck with your skipping! I hope it helps too. I have done nothing of exercise for years and now I'm running, doing Tai Chi (temporary as they give 2 months free in a park) and started skipping 😊

Be careful with the skipping please, I got one a couple of months back and was enjoying adding it to my non run day workouts.. I had done a few sessions but ended up with a knee injury which took me two weeks to get over.. But hopefully you have a better experience, just go easy 🙏☺️

in reply tosparky66

I am careful, using an online plan not to build up slowly. I would like for a professional to tell me if I jump correctly, but I don't have such a person around. So I'll just have to do how I think it should. On Monday I did hurt my knee a bit during Tai Chi. I felt it during the first 10 minutes of my run, but then it was gone. The knee also didn't give a peep during jumping. But as said, building it up slowly 😊

Nice! 👍 I'm going to follow your progress closely because you're making me very jealous. I have a garden so I would be able to skip there... Great idea to use a yoga mat to absorb some of the impact, I'm sure your parents will also appreciate if their living room is just below yours 🤣🤣

in reply toBeatlesforever

They only heard a bit of the landing part yesterday, my dad is sure the other neighbors (next door eg.) won't hear anything from it. But also for my knees and such it will be better to use a mat.

I'm going to follow my progress closely too, because I do am curious whether I will be able to keep up with it! I do hope so!

I'm sure you will, you're being sensible and following a plan that builds up slowly 👍💪

Oh well done! I assume having your running shoes on might help with your ankles knocking together. Have fun exploring what works and let us know!

in reply toCBDB

My treadmill running shoes are too heavy and bulky to jump with and my outdoor running shoes are too filthy (mud and little stones and such and no, not going to clean them out every day haha). But I'm going to look for a pair of shoes that are good for jumping. Light weight, flexible but supportive. I wish I could just go to a store and ask for jumping shoes, but there don't appear to be shoes specific for jumping...

Hi Evy. Can I ask you where you got your skipping / jump rope from and are they for beginners. I’m thinking of trying that. I haven’t skipped since childhood so this will be interesting 😂😂

in reply to

I bought it at a Dutch webshop (Bol.com), but it has increased in price in the meanwhile. Apparently I was lucky to stumble upon that rope when it was temporarily decreased in price. I don't know if it is a beginners rope to be honest. I just didn't want too cheap a rope (thinking that cheap = possible problems). But the ropes being offered online by companies who are specialized in jumping ropes, I found too expensive. Also didn't want a weighted rope, just wanted a simple, but good quality rope.

Thanks Evy ! That’s brilliant. I’m still looking . Like you I don’t want too expensive or too cheap. Because I’m just starting out with the skipping malarkey I don’t need anything that is too up market or new fangled if you know what I mean. Anyway thanks for the good information. Will have a peek 👀at the site.👍😀😀
