Panic attack or..?

Okay so I'm having strange very scary symptoms after a few weeks of EXTREMELY high anxiety. My body is stiff, I am very dizzy, my tongue feels too big, I feel like I keep "blacking out" and I'm very lightheaded. I also keep slipping into daydreaming no matter how hard i try to focus. My spit is super thick. My legs hurt like I've been exercising. Im really scared because these aren't my usual symptoms and I feel like something bad could be happening. I'm also very twitchy. Should I go to the ER? Sidenote: last week my doctor upped my prozac from 40 to 60mg and about 2 weeks ago I finished weaning off effexor completely. Sorry to be annoying but I'm very scared and haven't been able to do much of anything for the past week or so. These symptoms just started today though.

Hi dear, I think this is a combination of both withdrawal symptoms from weaning off Effexor as well as your doctor upping the dose of Prozac by 20mg just this past week.

Unfortunately in both weaning off a drug as well as upping a drug come side effects

until your body adjusts to the change. Rather than going to the ER, is it possible to

call your doctor and let him know how you are feeling? Are you on any other medication

such as a benzo that you can take as needed? It might be what your doctor suggests

while going through this period. xx

Been 4 month since I had a vertigo attack I've not been me. I hardly move fear of calling and collapsing. Anxiety sky high as the symptoms I have are never ending I keep going not but my feet and hands are cold sweaty. I keep having calling sensations of balance things feel as if there moving. I'm so exhausted I've got insomnia now also how can I be normal.

My friend, this all sounds like extreme anxiety. Are you constantly worrying about the vertigo attack you had? It's been 4 months and as difficult as it may be, you need

to let that go. It happened but it's been over for a long time. Keeping that thought

in mind everyday is building your anxiety up with no where to go, so you keep

developing these symptoms. One of the most common symptoms of anxiety is the

feeling that the floor is moving with each step you take. Check your breathing. One

of the keys to lowering your anxiety is to work on your breathing. Sometimes when

anxious, we tend to hold our breath or hyperventilate. Either one of these can give us these symptoms.

Insomnia happens because your subconscious mind keeps replaying your worries and fears not allowing you to go into REM sleep. Of course you are exhausted. You

need some sleep in order to regenerate your muscles. The body needs sleep, water

and food to function properly.

Do you do any relaxation or meditation therapy? I know it's difficult to tune into

some quiet mind and body meditation when you feel so off. But it is important.

I believe that "Sympathetic Breathing Meditation" by Quiet Mind Café on YouTube

can help reduce these symptoms significantly with practice. Please give it a try :) xx

Yes I worry morning till night about it. I worry I have everything going. The feelings I get are horrid I can't even enjoy food as I'm laid down I don't like been up 😥I can't even enjoy a bath I'm so restless and I rush everything

Agora1 profile image

I totally understand how miserable it is when we can't enjoy any aspect of life. Even taking a bath is scary and so we rush through everything. x

Sodown in reply toAgora1

Actually hard to explain to anyone how I feel I had a panic attack a few days before my vertigo attack but also both my ears are impacted in wax so yeah it's hard lol. I try to be me but can't x

Agora1 profile image
Agora1 in reply toSodown

Sodown, our ears control our balance, so it is necessary to have that

checked out by an ENT doctor before putting everything on our anxiety.

When we have a physical issue, that in itself causes anxiety to rise. Once

that issue is taken care of, your anxiety will lower dramatically.

Sodown in reply toAgora1

I think it's down to my ears as doc said can cause extreme anxiety and I'm agoraphobia so not been out I 4 month

Agora1 profile image
Agora1 in reply toSodown

It's true about the ears causing undue stress. Having been agoraphobic myself

at one time, I understand what it's like for you.

Vertigo attacks are the worst. Do you feel that you are moving or the room?

An inner ear problem can cause vertigo. Only your doctor can determine where

this is coming from. x

Sodown profile image
Sodown in reply toAgora1

Yes never experienced this after my previous attacks though but last attack the doc prescribed neckline and prcloprzine a weeks worth of both. 3 times a day I'm sure they have caused high anxiety a few weeks ago I could never sit down at all till bed. Now I'm hard!y up my partner does everything. Me man says I don't help my self though and it's all in my head which pisses me of x

You have to realize that our body responds to our stress. We can go from cold chills

to hot sweats to what you are experiencing with your feet. It's nothing serious, you

are okay. You are safe.

by being so scared? Of course not. Tune into YouTube and find some quiet

meditation that will calm you down.

Here's a good one whether it's a panic attack or not, it will quiet down your

oversensitized nervous system.

I have similar symptoms to you Sodown. I feel like I'm moving and everything around me is moving. One thing I find helps a lot with this symptom (and i know this is hard) is to just kind of think to yourself "so what?" everything feels like it's moving and I'm just going to go about my day regardless. If you keep thinking about vertigo your brain will actually CREATE more vertigo. Anxiety can mimic almost any illness.

I really believe that the meds are causing it. Not that it's bad but it's just something

we have to go through when weaning off a drug or increasing a dosage on another.

I say this through my own experience when having weaned off benzos. It took time

for the brain to adjust to the medicine not being there. Your doctor is replacing it

with another drug I understand, however that med has been increased causing your

brain to have to adjust. A few months ago when my Lexapro was upped a little, I

had some symptoms break through for a couple weeks and that was having been

on this med for years. It happens but it will all work itself out.

I'm not minimizing your fears. I more than understand how we all are with meds

to begin with. xx

I have the same symptoms, except the spit and tongue part. I feel like it could be your meds, i came off my antidepressants because they were making things worse not helping. I was on multiple, once two at a time an ssri and snri. I only take lorazepam until i see my doctor. Lorazepam works pretty well but doesnt cure these feelings. If i were you, get off the antidepressants. Even after i came off i still feel these feelings. They did not help me. You could have too much serotonin or too much electrical activity.

in reply toMike7777

hmmnmm.. yeah one of my big fears is serotonin syndrome. i don't have a fever or anything though. I really want to stick through the initial side effects of this drug and see if i notice anything changing. How are you feeling right now?

in reply to

Personally, from what I know you shouldnt be put on two ssri/snris at the same time

Mike7777 profile image
Mike7777 in reply to

I dont have a fever either, i feel hot sometimes though. I was on zoloft at first then switched to lexapro, this was about 8-10 weeks total of being on ssris. They did not help. I can totally relate to body twiches as i still get them. I have alot of head symptoms, pressure, pain, insane derealization, foggyness, sensory overloaded, ringing in ears and pain, sometimes hearing will get muffled and ill feel like im going to blackout, me and you have alot of the same symptoms. I have two tests monday for my brain. I dont know if this is just anxiety because i have more panic attacks then just simply anxiety. And if it was anxiety why didnt the meds help me? Oh and i was also on trazodone 25-50mg which is an snri, was on that while on lexapro 10mg. Helped me sleep but made my symptoms worse. By the way if you are on effexor and prozac at the same time that is two antidepressants like you said in your comment. Regardless of wether your not taking it anymore you could still be suffering from mixing those two types of meds, like me. I really hope we figure out what is causing us these symptoms. I have been on ativan on and off for 3 months. It works. Dont worry what people say about benzos, its bullshit. I am on a very low dose too. Please keep me updated on how your doing.

Sounds to my as though you and I are in the same boat - we are Physically and Mentally Exhausted!

These symptoms are Classic, and can be dangerous if you don't Slow Down! I have not heard of such a high dose if prozac being given in many years, but a side effect can be that you feel 'high', as though you can do more than is possible.

I am on that see saw now, one minute my Heart's racing, and I become very agitated, or I'm crying buckets. I have taken my own advise, and shouted from the rooftops to be heard...🙄🙏🙏.

Your symptoms are real to You, so get shouting..! All the bedt x

Sounds like symptoms of derealization/panic attack, and no do not call ER. You are not having a heart attack. Adrenaline is rushing through your whole body making it feel like you're restless. The feeling of blacking out is just the derealazation. I know how this felt like. It feels like impossible its going to end but it will. Remember these feelings are temporary. Drink lots of water and call a loved one. You will be okay, i promise. Take deep deep breaths. If you know how to do a body scan, i suggest you'd do that.

in reply toThat_totoro_gal

Paradoxically, if one has a tight chest and cannot get a full breath, one needs to relax first. Do not forcefully suck-in air, because this will cause over-breathing and make you light-headed and faintish, also, if you are tight in the stomach, it can cause extreme discomfort and bloating due to wind being trapped in the stomach. Take shallow, measured breaths and tell yourself that that is all you need to survive. Another point, do not confuse sucking-in air with hyperventilating. Through many years of experience with both, I can attest that they are very different. A very low dose of 2mg diazepam (one each night) helps to relieve the chest tightness. However, if put into a retraumatizing phobic situation which brings on tightness, the low dosage is not enough, I feel like escaping the situation. Battling through it, only increases tension and later causes depression. More than 50 years of just about every therapy has brought me to the realization, my sensitive and caring nature is something, other people and myself must accept.

I am so sorry your going thru this. I pray to God to calm you down and comfort you. There are so many feelings that anxiety can give to us. I to had an anxiety attack after taking a medicine that did not agree with my system. I even called 911. The paramedics sat with me until the anxiety attack settled down. If you fear that it is more than anxiety you should be checked. We never really know if it is a serious situation or if our minds are just over reacting to something. May God calm your fears and guide you.

I had similar symptoms and was diagnosed with functional neurological disorder so go to neurologist. It’s a condition where the brain is like a computer, the hardware is normal but the software is glitching causing neurological symptoms.

in reply toAjaStar

Sounds like you are on the right track. The analogy is very good. Also, overload a computer and see what happens.

I am wondering if your Doctor done any testing on you ? You may call and tell them you want a complete physical to rule out anything that maybe going on and then you can focus on fixing your anxiety. I went off of 150 mg of Effexor about 7 months ago and yes I had withdrawal symptoms but nothing like you are describing. I would definitely call and get a complete physical including a EKG in which most doctor offices have them as part of your physical and than if your not seeing a Psychiatrist I would start to go see one. Hope this will help you on deciding what to do as you can't live happy like this. Get checked and than work with a Psychiatrist on you anxiety. My heart goes out to you.

I felt this way exact way too . Stay hydrated the lack of fluids could by causing cramps. You may want to have you primary care doctor check your iron potassium and electrolyte levels mine were low and was causing so these feelings

Cibolagirl profile image

It’s your meds. Effexor is a bitch and Prozac is not the best SSRI for anxiety, believe me. Drs have no clue when they throw drugs at us and take others away like candy. These are serious medications.

Often you have a delay in withdrawal symptoms. Two weeks and your body can rebound.

I am not a doctor but it sure seems like anxiety to me.Did you occasionally nip your tongue with your teeth,to make you think your tongue had grown?and produce more saliva making you swallow more, so it feels thicker.

You will feel stiff because your muscles are so tense with anxiety, likewise feeling light headed, this is a common anxiety effect.
