Intrusive thoughts

I’m 26 years old and I was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder in 2011. I have been on and off medication for years. I was always able to manage it to an extent. Recently I experienced the worst panic attack in my life 2 months ago in my own home. (Which is my safe place) I woke up in a panic and my mind just started racing. I couldn’t think straight and I started experiencing intense intrusive thoughts. It scared the crap out of me. I’m currently on Prozac and Xanax. I also speak to a therapist once a week. I’ve been doing better but yesterday morning I experienced the same panic attack and it upset me very much because I don’t know how to handle it and I felt like i was losing the sense of reality. Like I’m going crazy.

I’m scared because I’ve never had anxiety over the stuff I’m having now. Everything makes me anxious and I second guess everything I do. The mornings are THE WORST for me. I live in the fear now of those panic attacks happening again.

I just want it to get better and I’m scared I’m going to be like this forever.

Good ol’ intrusive thoughts... the last panic attack I had almost landed me in the ER... I’ve started walking everyday and keeping busy trying my best to distract my mind... even though yea those horrible thoughts seep through the seams of my attempt to drown them out... the worst part about my anxiety is it causes a type of vertigo I get so dizzy it’s causes me not to be able to function. I try my hardest to get good sleep... I also try and eat healthy take my vitamins and be In The sun more.... Vit.D is essential with dealing with anxiety.... and exercise!!!! May not rid it completely but it sure does help...

If you are still suffering from panic attacks while on meds ask your psychiatrist to switch your meds. I would say Zoloft or Lexapro in my opinion work really well at combatting panic & anxiety. Xanax can be addicting and in my opinion should only be taken on a as needed basis. Im not a doctor Im a former sufferer of panic and general anxiety disorder.

Ive been in therapy to erradicate the panic and anxiety & it's helped tremendously. Im looking to come down from meds very soon.

Good luck to you.

You are not alone.

So this will be my 3rd time on Prozac and it helped me a lot in the passed. I’m still on a pretty low dose so maybe that is why?

I also don’t take the Xanax everyday. When I do get panic attacks I try really hard to get through it myself. I only take it when I’m really bad

Thank you so much for your response

Im just saying. You do what you feel is the right choice for you. Again, im not a doctor but I know with my experience Zoloft and Lexapro are excellent. Lexapro has a numbing effect and Zoloft has a calming effect. Good luck to you

Hi

So sorry to hear what you are going through. I too have GAD but was able to recover almost completely on the antidepressant I took from the start and never had to change meds.

I also followed a programme I had developed which includes excercise daily as well as eating healthier, little and often and periods of relaxation. You certainly need to keep occupied and also try to accept and not to be afraid of the symptoms. I know that is not easy with panic attacks so do feel for you.

I think if you are on a low dose of antidepressants that you should talk to your doctor and look to increase the dose, possibly a couple of times if they advise it.

If you want more information on what worked for me feel free to message me.

Best wishes

Kim

Thank you for your feedback!

I’m currently just feeling like I’m going with the flow of things and I second guess everything. It’s like am I really present? And that feeling makes me SO uneasy. Im definitely going to take in what you suggested. Thank you!
