Help Please! How Do I Fit 2 Doses Of NDT & Vitamin Supplements + Iron In My Day Without Negative Interactions?

MindfulMoments profile image

Advice would be greatly appreciated in how I can fit all this in without one thing affecting another. I take NDT am and pm (afternoon), Vitamins with dinner and Iron/C before bed, but taking Iron this late is affecting my sleep and stomach. I have difficulty enough sleeping properly. I don't know the best way to take all this stuff as Iron affects other Vits and thyroid meds if taken too closely together:

Thyroid S x 2 doses ; B complex ; Osteocare (D3, Zinc, Boron, Magnesium, Calcium) ; Iron/C liquid Sachet.

I will also be taking Collegan Peptide powder shortly once it's arrived.

All suggestions will be gratefully received. 😊

There’s increasing evidence about calcium supplements and evidence that they cause colon polyps and that the calcium ends up in arteries rather than bones and therefore best avoided.

In this article they recommend getting calcium from your diet and exercise -

‘Multiple studies have found that there’s little to no benefit to taking calcium supplements for the prevention of hip fractures. On the other hand, recent studies have linked calcium supplements with an increased risk of colon polyps (small growths in the large intestine that can become cancerous) and kidney stones, which are hard masses usually formed in the kidneys from an accumulation of calcium and other substances. Additionally, a 2016 study by Michos and her colleagues suggested that calcium supplements may increase the risk of calcium buildup in the heart’s arteries.’

This is so important - and something I'm always telling people (don't take calcium) that I think you should post it in a separate thread so that more people can see it. Not everyone is going to read this thread. :)

Thank you! Very enlightening. I did see this via a YouTube video, but wasn't sure how medically genuine it was.

Thanks. I have seen this view before via a YouTube video, but I wasn't sure how medically sound it was from the video. I will look further into this, appreciate it.

I have no advice but just wanted tochime in that I feel I have alarms going on all day long to take this or that so they don't affect each other. It's really annoying.

Absolutely, I agree and I hate taking all these supplements anyway! 😄

I don’t mind all the alarms but they do drive my husband absolutely bonkers : )

You need to give your hubby ear plugs for his birthday, best present he'd probably have 🤣🤣

I also have the default alarm that sounds like a fire alarm bell… with my out of whack hormones, everytime they go off I jump out of my skin : )

I need to find time to choose a gentler sound too : )

I'm probably wrong but if taking your iron is causing you sleep problems then I would move the time as sleep is soooo important. So that means something has to give and I'm not sure that everything has to be separated by hours. For example if item A is taken before lunch and item B after lunch then they are to some extent physically separated in both space and time and likely to not be massively compromised in their efficacy.

However, some people will disagree and that's fine and I do accept there are a few items which need to be well separated - but these are exceptions not a universal rule.

Hi,

I can give you advice around the Iron supplement (I use ferroglobin not the powerful ones) and take over 4 hours after levoythyroxin (150mg).

I take levothyroxin and between 2am and 4am.

I appreciate these times are not great but if you can manage 6-7am and iron 10-11 am?

If you don't do this your TSH will rise out of range and you will feel fatigued.

Personally I take other Vitamins later in the day (B12, C and D)

Good Luck.

Thanks. I am on NDT and take it 6-7 am then at 3-4pm, I can't tolerate taking it all in one go unfortunately. This is why fitting in vitamins and iron in with 4-6 hours gap either way is a little tricky in the day. I can't take it any earlier as I need as much sleep as possible as I don't sleep brilliantly. You do well to get up at 2am + to take the Levo.

What time do you usually wake up?

What time do you usually take your NDT?

Note : I'm not a fan of most combined supplements like Osteocare. And I never take calcium.

Calcium was discussed in another thread earlier today :

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

...

This is just one suggested timetable. There are no guarantees it will suit you.

Let me assume you wake up at 7am and take your thyroid hormones straight away.

7am : Take NDT dose 1 immediately with plenty of water.

8am : Have breakfast.

10am or 11am : Take vitamins - B Complex, Vitamin D3, and vitamin C. You should really take vitamin K2 as well.

3 pm : Take iron.

7pm : NDT dose 2

10 pm : Take Zinc, Boron, Magnesium

...

I don't know anything about Collagen Peptide supplements, so I have no idea what they might affect or what time they should be taken.

Wake up around 6ish - 9am depending on the day and schedule. Always try to take it between 6-7am and 3-4pm

Thanks. Doesn't the NDT keep you awake at night because of the T3?

I take NP thyroid and, fortunately, I do well taking my full dose 1x/morning. My copious research yielded this info as I have just added iron (it will be short-term)& calcium & magnesium supplemets: D3, K2MK7 is fine to take w/calcium. Take all of these 4hrs away from NDT & magnesium to be taken 2 hrs away from calcium. I, too, am exhausted from all the supplements! I do read the negativity regarding calcium supplements. That is why I take the K2-MK7 Then I fit the Bcomplex in as well! Ah, the pre-Hashimoto days were so easy

Absolutely, I agree. Folk around me think I'm just over fussy doing this and avoiding that. They don't have to live with this wretched illness.

I have similar issues .. different meds different times , unsure what affects each others… I’m actually going to ask to speak to the pharmacist consultant… at our doctors … the pharmacist consultant always does the medication review … so thought I’d ask for a call back

MindfulMoments profile image
MindfulMoments in reply toCatlady73

I hope you get better advice than I did when I consulted a pharmacist, they advised just to take an over the counter multivitamin and didn't know anything about taking K2 with vitamin D3, nor a clue about NDT treatment 🙄
