hi all, i posted my latest blood test results a few weeks ago and on seasidesusies advice i had another bloodtest done at my drs to test for iron levels, i took a list of what needed to be tested and was assured by the nurse that it was all being tested. These were taken on wednesday fasted at 8.30am no levothroxine for 24 hrs. B12 was much the same as the last test. I haven't heard from the dr but i'd like your advice so if one does ring me i know what i'm talking about. I haven't bought any vitamin d yet as i've been reading on the websites that seasidesusie directed me to and i'm wondering if i should get a very high dose of 25,000iu for 5 days and then back down to a much lower dose?

TSH 0.01 mU/L 0.30 - 4.20

T4 20.4 pmol/L 9.0 - 19.0

T3 5.3 pmol/L 3 - 5.4

Vitamin D 44 nmol/L 50 - 250

Serum Folate 8.6 microg/L 3.0 -20.0

Serum Ferritin 13.3 microg/L 10 - 200

Serum Iron Level 12.3 micromol/L 11 - 30

Serum Transferrin 3.30g/L 1.8 - 3.6

Transferrin Saturation Index 15% 16 - 50

Vitamin D 44 nmol/L 50 - 250

Did you go onto the Vit D Council's website and look at the tables of suggested doses?

vitamindcouncil.org/i-teste...

Your Vit D level is 17.6ng/ml (44nmol/L) so you'd use the second table and if aiming for 50ng/ml (125nmol/L) it says 4,900iu D3 daily so you'd buy the 5,000iu dose as the closest.

I haven't bought any vitamin d yet as i've been reading on the websites that seasidesusie directed me to and i'm wondering if i should get a very high dose of 25,000iu for 5 days and then back down to a much lower dose?

Did you go to the Grassroots website and use their calculator for suggested dose? Nowhere have I recommended anyone to go there for that reason. If you read down the thread

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

you will see that I only direct people to the Vit D Council's website to work out what dose to take and to Grassroots website only to convert nmol/L to ng/ml and vice versa.

It was member Userotc who mentioned the calculator for suggested dose on Grassroots website and my reply to him was

I'm wary of suggesting that anyone should take their suggested "loading doses" so I stick to the Vit D Council suggestions which I am much more comfortable with, and I have no idea if the person I am responding to will have a reaction to Vit D (some people can't take it at all) so I don't suggest more than 5,000iu for anyone with low levels.

I stand by that. I would never suggest any member take such a high daily dose as is suggested on Grassroot's website.

Don't forget that when taking D3 it's important to take the recommended cofactors of Vit K2-MK7 and magnesium as mentioned in my reply to your previous post.

Serum Folate 8.6 microg/L 3.0 -20.0

My suggestion is the same as before, Thorne Basic B.

**

Serum Ferritin 13.3 microg/L 10 - 200

Serum Iron Level 12.3 micromol/L 11 - 30

Serum Transferrin 3.30g/L 1.8 - 3.6

Transferrin Saturation Index 15% 16 - 50

As suspected before this iron panel strongly suggests iron deficiency.

Optimal iron panel levels according to rt3-adrenals.org/Iron_test_... are:

Serum iron: 55 to 70% of the range, higher end for men - yours is 6.84% through range, dreadfully low.

Saturation: optimal is 35 to 45%, higher end for men - yours is just 15%, again dreadfully low.

Transferrin: Low in range indicates lack of capacity for additional iron, High in range indicates body's need for supplemental iron - yours is 83.33% through range so that's high and suggests supplementation is needed.

Ferritin: Low level virtually always indicates need for iron supplementation - yours is a dire 1.74% through range.

Did your GP also do the full blood count suggested which is needed to see if you have anaemia? You can have iron deficiency with or without anaemia and if you have iron deficiency without anaemia this needs treating as much as iron deficiency anaemia does.

Thanks for clearing the vit d up for me i shall look for a 5000iu dose, and also get the thorne basic b, i already had some magnesium so i started taking that last week.

Yes he did a full blood count, i've copy and pasted so i hope it's come out right!

All these low results should confirm to your GP that you have anaemia, so along with your iron panel results you should get a diagnosis of iron deficiency anaemia. Your GP should prescribe treatment which is likely to be in the form of iron tablets. Take each tablet with some Vit C to aid absorption and help prevent constipation.

You should have regular iron panels every few weeks to check your progress.

At some point your GP will say everything is fine and stop the iron tablets. It is important that you keep an ongoing eye on your levels and you may need to take some sort of maintenance dose of iron. If GP isn't willing to do this then you can do a Home Iron Test with Medichecks which is an iron panel and buy your own iron tablets but bear in mind the optimal levels for an iron panel above, do not take too much iron that it raises your serum iron and saturation percentage too high and too much iron is toxic.

Are you female or male?

If female, pre or post menopause

See from previous posts you are vegan

Ferritin was similarly dire two years ago

humanbean gave you in-depth info back then

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

What vitamin supplements are you currently taking

There’s no B12 result above

As vegan you will need to work hard at supplementing to maintain optimal vitamin levels

At very least Daily B12 and daily vitamin B complex, plus vitamin D

If self supplementing iron it’s important to do full iron panel test every 4-6 months on iron supplements

It’s possible to have low ferritin but high iron …..

Medichecks iron panel test

hi, I'm female 51 and suspect that i'm going through the menopause. I did buy some iron tablets after humanbeans info but they gave me stomach pains and so i stopped them, i have tried other iron supplements like a liquid iron tonic and some iron supplements that say they're gentle but not got on with any so far, but i think i'm just going to have to suck it up and just take whatever the dr prescribes. My B12 was 932 ng/L 180 - 900 I haven't taken any B12 in about a month. I started taking magnesium last week, hoping that the dr prescribes me some iron to start asap, i'm going to get vitamin b complex and vitamin d to start in the next few weeks.

If you can’t tolerate iron supplements

Choice is either to get iron transfusion privately or consider changing diet to include eating meat

Other members have had iron transfusion here
