Hello,

I just received my advanced thyroid and it appears my thyroid hormone levels are fine but my TPO's are high. No advice was given about how to deal with the high TPO's. Is it just a matter of waiting until things get worse to receive treatment? I had the test done, as I suffer regularly from hair loss, depression and tiredness. Is this an indication of Hashimoto's or Am I being a hypochondriac?

Complete results below.

Many thanks

Silvia

Vitamin D X 22.60 nmol/L <25 Deficient (Range: 50 - 200)

Make an appointment with GP

Vitamin D is deficient and GP should prescribe LOADING Dose Vitamin D

That’s a total of 300,000iu over 6-8 weeks and retest vitamin D levels at end of the course

You will then need to self supplement to maintain daily ongoing maintenance dose

NHS Guidelines on dose vitamin D required

ouh.nhs.uk/osteoporosis/use...

GP will often only prescribe to bring vitamin D levels to 50nmol. Some CCG areas will prescribe to bring levels to 75nmol or even 80nmol

leedsformulary.nhs.uk/docs/...

GP should advise on self supplementing if over 50nmol, but under 75nmol (but they rarely do)

mm.wirral.nhs.uk/document_u...

But with Hashimoto’s, improving to around 80nmol or 100nmol by self supplementing may be better

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/218...

vitamindsociety.org/pdf/Vit...

Once you Improve level, very likely you will need on going maintenance dose to keep it there.

Test twice yearly via NHS private testing service when supplementing

Vitamin D mouth spray by Better You is very effective as it avoids poor gut function.

There’s a version made that also contains vitamin K2 Mk7. One spray = 1000iu

It’s trial and error what dose we need, with hashimoto’s we frequently need higher dose than average

Folate - Serum 4.18 ug/L (Range: > 3.89)

Vitamin B12 - Active 54.200 pmol/L (Range: 37.5 - 150)

B12 and folate are on low side

Request GP test folate and B12

Come back with new post once you get results

Assuming GP doesn’t prescribe anything

supplementing a good quality daily vitamin B complex, one with folate in (not folic acid) may be beneficial.

This can help keep all B vitamins in balance and will help improve B12 levels too

Difference between folate and folic acid

chriskresser.com/folate-vs-...

Many Hashimoto’s patients have MTHFR gene variation and can have trouble processing folic acid.

B vitamins best taken after breakfast

Thorne Basic B or Jarrow B Right are recommended options that contains folate, but both are large capsules. (You can tip powder out if can’t swallow capsule)

IMPORTANT......If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 7 days before ALL BLOOD TESTS , as biotin can falsely affect test results

If serum B12 result below 500, (Or active B12 below 70) recommended to be taking a B12 supplement as well as a B Complex (to balance all the B vitamins) initially for first 2-4 months, then once your serum B12 is over 500 (or Active B12 level has reached 70), stop the B12 and just carry on with the B Complex.

Improving low vitamin levels is likely to reveal that you need to be started on levothyroxine

Retest thyroid 6-8 weeks after finishing vitamin D loading dose

Request GP test full iron panel test for anaemia and you should have coeliac blood test done too as diagnosis of Hashimoto’s
