thyroid results Help please

Hi I went to medicheck as advised by people here. I have had half my thyroid removed two months ago. Can you help with a couple of results please.

Free T4 20.3. Range12-22

Free T3 7.26 (3.1-6.8)

TSH 1.68. (027 -4.2)

Vit D -101 (50-175)

Vit D12 83.6 (37.5-187.5)

Folate 2.68 (3.89-19.45)

Ferritin 49.7 (13-150)

Thyroidglobulin AB 349 (0-115)

Thyroid Persoxidase 222 (0-34)

Would my antibodies be up due to healing from surgery as they were normal before surgery? Also my T4 has gone quite high and my `t3 is high.... will these level out in time? thanks so much.

Hi Lillywing

So your results have jumped about a LOT in the last month - previously you had

TSH 1.77

freeT4 16.9 [12 - 22]

freeT3 3.3 [3.2 - 6.8]

vit D 151

Folate is now obviously low and vit D has dropped quite a lot (so increase supplement back a bit) and ferritin, would prob be better a bit higher (try liver or liver pate - yuk - once a week or more red meat in diet if not veggie) - but hopefully SeasideSusie the nutrient queen will be along in a bit.

As far as thyroid hormones go, the high antibodies indicate Hashis - so your results are likely to jump about. You currently look a bit over-medicated - free T4 is up and now over 80% through range but free T3 is over-range.

What meds are you on? How do you feel? If it were me, I'd probably drop levo a bit - 25 mcg a day or alternate days - and see what that does to the results and how you feel

It takes time to get to the optimum level of medication, so it's trial and error for a lot of us x

Interestingly I’m on no meds for my thyroid. And it was this level T4 before I had half removed!!! Thank you for keeping the info from before!!i also feel well except my energy flags quicker.

I’ve just seen a post saying tests should be done early on empty stomach. I’d had breakfast. How does this change the results? Does that mean I should do them again?

No, you're fine :)

The most important thing is to stop taking any supplements containing biotin a few days before a blood draw (or you get distorted results), and once on levo to leave 24 hours from your last tablet (to get a good representative level of thyroid hormone in your body) and an early morning draw (to get the highest possible level of TSH as so many docs are obsessed with TSH). It's also best to take your levo on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before and 2 hours after other drink or food - so usually you want a fasting test so you can take your levo immediately afterwards x

Vit D -101 (50-175)

Are you supplementing? As it has dropped from 151 then if those were my results I'd want them back where they were.

Vit D12 83.6 (37.5-187.5)

Active B12 is a bit low, I'd want mine over 100.

Folate 2.68 (3.89-19.45)

Thia is Folate deficiency so you need to speak to your GP who may prescribe folic acid. From NICE Clinical Knowledge Summary

cks.nice.org.uk/topics/anae...

Serum folate of less than 7 nanomol/L (3 micrograms/L) is used as a guide to indicate folate deficiency.

However, there is an indeterminate zone with folate levels of 7–10 nanomol/L (3–4.5 micrograms/L), so low folate should be interpreted as suggestive of deficiency and not diagnostic.

I believe that Medichecks uses mcg/L so your level of 2.68 suggests deficiency.

Ferritin 49.7 (1 3-150)

This is low, it's recommended that Ferritin is half way through range. Eating liver liver pate, black pudding and other iron rich foods will help. Don't supplement with iron tablets unless you have an iron panel and full blood count and they show iron deficiency or iron deficiency anaemia and then your GP should prescribe and monitor.

I am supplementing vit d but went to every other day. Plus the sun has gone! Thank you your information is very helpful. Could the folate level explain getting tired quickly?.. I ordered some supplements already!

Lillywing

Folate deficiency can lead to anaemia so you also need testing for that, show this result to your GP and ask for testing rather than just self supplementing.
