Hi just wondered if anyone could help my sister. I have Hashimoto's and an underactive thyroid - levothyroxine 100 µg. My younger sister has some symptoms which are very similar to mine. She's always been Vitamin b12 deficient and has had injections in the past. However no-one has ever suggested that the thyroid may be an issue. In fact, her doctor refused her a full thyroid check to include TPO antibodies - despite her telling them that I've been diagnosed with hashimotos in Jan (!!!)
I recommended that she went to Blue Horizons. The results are below. Just wondered if anyone had any advice on interpreting them? She doesn't have the elevated TPO like me, but the TSH is quite high.
Many thanks in advance.

Well her vitamin D, folate and B12 levels are all very low
Suggests poor gut function (common with Hashimoto’s)
First step is to get these vitamins all at good levels and then retest thyroid and vitamins in say 2-3 months
She needs full testing for Pernicious Anaemia before restarting on B12 injections if cause is PA or daily B12 supplements if is negative for Pernicious Anaemia
Low vitamin D obviously needs improving and GP should prescribe 1600iu everyday for 6 months
Vitamin D
GP will often only prescribe to bring levels to 50nmol.
Some areas will prescribe to bring levels to 75nmol
Thank you for your reply! This is all really helpful info that I can use with my GP. Re the gut health, I’ve more recently been ‘diagnosed’ with IBS-C but have been symptomatic for years - it’s become a way of life. I’ve also been prescribed beta blockers to reduce the physical effects of anxiety, which I take on an ad-hoc basis, although it was the mention of antidepressants by a trainee a couple of weeks ago, that really concerned me!
Hopefully, we can now look at a forming a plan to get some normality!
Igennus Super B is good quality and cheap vitamin B complex. Contains folate. Full dose is two tablets per day. Many/most people may only need one tablet per day. Certainly only start on one per day (or even half tablet per day for first couple of weeks)
Or Thorne Basic B or jarrow B-right are other options that contain folate, but both are large capsules
If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 7 days before any blood tests, as biotin can falsely affect test results
