Hello Everyone Happy New Year to everyone and Hope everyone has gotten off on a good foot! just got my Vitamin B12 and D3 results finally since February 2019 which was my last testing of these two, I will be ordering these more frequently on my Owen. On Wednesday I will take the ferritin, folate and magnesium blood test, so when I see my doctor on the 21st I can be prepared. One year for vitamin tests or someone who has Hashimotos is just not acceptable to me. Here are my results and little confused with the vitamin D one as it says the range I am in is optimal? I know that I have read here anything under 300, would be low, I have 607 our low range in the US is 200-1100. My question is is my result 607 then normal? I ask because I have heart palpitations and read low b12 can cause increase bpm? I also took a nutrition saliva test and B12, D was indicated at low. I want to know what I need to tell my doctor when she hits me with the test are normal? Are these numbers normal really? I would appreciate your input please before I see her. My number in October 2019 were
TSH - 2.3. 0.40-4.5 miu/l
T4 - 1.0. 08-1.8 ng/dl
T3-2.9 - 2.3-4.2 pg/ml
TPA 7 - - <9 iu/ml
Thyroglobulin <1. <or 1 iu
Above TSH, T4, T3 Normal according to my Dr.
I still have insomnia, loss of hair, especially on top of my head, I get hair pain for those of you who think your crazy your not look it up! Constipated, tired, body aches. I know that I am under medicated on 45 mcg but 60 mcg amour Thyroid makes my heart race even more. Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated. I am currently taking b12 2k, D 3 5k , k 2 mk7, C 1k, folate 665 mcg, holy basil 500, magnesium citrate 400 mg three times a day. Thank you in advance Millie

Something's not quite right here.
You've started talking about Vit D and ended up talking about B12.
You have a Vit D result showing in the picture of 60ng/ml. The Vit D Council recommends a level of 50ng/ml and the Vit D Society recommends a level of 40-60ng/ml so your level is just about perfect.
As for your B12 result of 607 - is that pg/ml or ng/L? According to an extract from the book, "Could it be B12?" by Sally M. Pacholok:
"We believe that the 'normal' serum B12 threshold needs to be raised from 200 pg/ml to at least 450 pg/ml because deficiencies begin to appear in the cerebrospinal fluid below 550".
"For brain and nervous system health and prevention of disease in older adults, serum B12 levels should be maintained near or above 1000 pg/ml."
I have no knowledge of saliva tests for Vit D or B12, I don't even know if they're available in the UK.
I am currently taking b12 2k,
folate 665 mcg,
What is your folate level?
When taking B12 we should take a B Complex to balance all the B vitamins. A good B Complex such as Thorne Basic B or Igennus Super B, at their suggested dose, contains 400mcg methylfolate. I think it would be more suitable to take a B Complex rather than just methylfolate.
D 3 5k , k 2 mk7,
Now that you are at the top limit of the recommended level, it would be best to find your maintenance dose. If you continue at 5,000iu D3 daily then this may take your level too high and risk toxicity as excess Vit D gets stored as it's a fat soluble vitamin and can't be excreted.
Your maintenance dose may be 2000iu daily, maybe more or less, maybe less in summer than winter, it's trial and error so it's recommended to retest once or twice a year to keep within the recommended range
holy basil 500
Is there a particular reason you take Holy Basil? I ask because it can lower cortisol, and if you don't know if you need your cortisol lowering then it may not be a good idea to take it.
C 1k, , magnesium citrate 400 mg three times a day
@seasideSusie thank you for getting back to me, To your first question for b12 it’s pg/ml, I did a nutritional Dna salva test which tells me my dna, and according to my dna it shows I need to have these vitamins B12 - D addressed with my dr I will show her my Dna results when I see her on the 21st. My correction it’s nutritional dna 🧬 I will try to do a print screen so you can see. Mind you I stopped taking my vitamins for a week before my blood test so I could get a true reading. So after the test I started taking them again, wouldn’t my numbers be higher then?
OK, so your B12 at 607pg/ml isn't too bad but not at the level recommended in my quote above from Sally Pacholok. Can you get Active B12 test done where you are? It's a better test as it measures what is available for the cells to use whereas Total B12 (the test you've had done) measures both bound and unbound (active) B12 and doesn't give separate levels. So you can actually have a good Total B12 but the Active B12 could be low.
With B12, to get a measure of what you're holding on to you need to stop supplementing for 4-5 months. If you want to know if the amount you are supplementing is adequate then you continue taking it. You also continue taking your Vit D supplement as that again tells you if you are supplementing at the correct dose. You just don't take them before the blood draw on the day of the test, take them afterwards.
Also, as you are taking a B Complex, it's important that this is not taken in the 7 days before any blood test, this is because a B Complex contains Biotin (B7) and if Biotin is used in the testing procedure (most labs do use it) then it can give false results.
I don't know if gaining weight is anything to do with Vit D.
As for your Holy Basil, I would suggest you monitor your cortisol level to make sure it doesn't go too low.
Thank you so much for your reply I appreciate it, I will find out about the active b12 test, I am taking the ferritin, folate, magnesium I am taking on my own, on tomorrow so I can bring to her. As she tells me insurance plan will only pay for blood work every three or6 months. I will ask the cardiologist to refer me to an endocrinologist that he feels will work with me, with my Hashimotos and my diabetes, and only go to this GP for Physical. I am in gratitude to you thank you once again for your valuable advice🙂
I am 61 years old so I consider myself an older adult, I ask because I read I’d your b12 is too low it can cause heart palpitations, I mean I couldn’t be out in the sun or do anything my bpm would go from 70 to 160 in a matter of a few minutes that’s why i went to the cardiologist. I had a monitor on for one month, and next week going for an echocardiogram, heart disease does run in my family my dad passed at 67 heart attack and my brother is two years older than me and has 4 stents already in his arteries
@seasidesusie, I see about the vitamin d it could be possible because I started to gain a few lbs? It could be that? I didn’t know that thank you 😊 Yes Greygoose recommended it and a few other people, I took the adrenal cortisol saliva test and my levels were high especially at night my GP sells supplements I bought adaptenal but I didn’t see any improvement. Greygoose told me to take holy basil leaf someone else mentioned by Swanson 400 per capsule I take only one, I believe it’s the reason why I couldn’t sleep i was up all night doing much better now with the insomnia. I was getting 3-4 hrs of sleep now I am sleeping average of 7 so much better. I take C 1k greygoose told me that too, but was only taking magnesium citrate 2 times a day will do three!
I replied with hitting the reply button I hope you got my answers My gratitude for answering me and helping me address this with my doctors when I see them next week, I am also prediabetic I was below 5.7 which put me off prediabetic but new test 5.8 I find I have to stick to the gluten free! And stay away from the carbs! My bodies suger soars if I eat non gluten free it’s something I am learning and trying to adjust. Here I feel sane because people understand me, in the doctors office she makes me feel like I am crazy and need to me on meds. Even though I told her I have been on meds for 13 yrs since I lost my only son and my mom, I think I would know the difference if I am having a panic attack or Pstd, she still does not hear me. It’s okay because she will be replaced if I don’t get answers. Thank you again and to all the people who had aided me when I thought I was going crazy it means a lot . In gratitude always 🙂
