lethargy after taking magnesium glycinate

hi, i was just wondering if anyone has the same side effect of tiredness/lethargy when taking magnesium glycinate?

i took 400mg in capsule form, and i feel like i have walked 1000 miles this morning!

maybe i should take less to start with etc? or maybe my body needs it so much that its busy absorbing it?

ive had a twitchy right eyelid for about a week or so also.

i usually feel a bit worn out but not this much and its only happened as ive taken the glycinate.

Magnesium can be calming, which is why it's suggested to take in the evening as it can aid sleep. Maybe that dose is just too much for you.

I use magnesium citrate powder and with a powder you can start with a very low dose and work up to what's right for you. However, as magnesium citrate can have a laxative effect, anyone who has no trouble in that department would probably avoid that form of magnesium.

thanks for your reply susie :) yeah i took it before bed lastnight, and i slept all night which i dont normally do, but yeah i will have to try starting with 100mg maybe and see if thats better. I have tried other forms before and like you say they can be a bit 'loosening' lol! i did read here... drcarolyndean.com/2012/10/w... that maybe its a combination of maybe deficiency/taking alot of vitamin d (10,000iu) as i have a vit d deficiency etc

I haven't read Dr Carolyn Dean but I do know that her supplements that she sells are extremely expensive, some people think they're worth it, some people have not benefitted from them any more than other brands. I must admit I do tend to shy away from articles that purely push their own brands.

that maybe its a combination of maybe deficiency/taking alot of vitamin d (10,000iu) as i have a vit d deficiency etc

Looking at previous posts, this one in particular from 2 months ago

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

First of all, I don't think a Vit D level of 45 falls into the "Deficiency" category, that's usually <30nmol/L. 45 would be in the "Insufficiency" category.

Why are you still taking 10,000iu D3? Is that the amount your GP prescribed or are you buying it yourself? If you were deficient - <30nmol/L originally - your GP would have given you loading doses totalling 300,000iu over a number of weeks then reduced you down to a maintenance dose.

I said in that post of 2 months ago:

If you have been taking 10,000iu D3 daily since May then you may have gone over the recommended range. Is that prescribed or do you buy your own? It's essential to test D3 twice a year when supplementing to keep within the range recommended by the Vit D Council, the Vit D Society and Grassroots Health which is 100-150nmol/L

That was 5 months ago.

You didn't reply to me but in a reply to SlowDragon a month later, who also asked what your then level was you said

its due for retesting right now, and zinc i was taking 45mg zinc sulphate for a while so now stopped that)

So what is your new level?

If you started taking 10,000iu D3 daily in May, and if are still taking 10,000iu D3 daily then I believe you will most likely have gone way over range. You certainly wont still have a deficiency (and I doubt you ever were "Deficient" in the correct sense), and I doubt very much if you're still in the "Insufficiency" category. If you haven't tested I suggest you do it as a matter of urgency. Levels above 250nmol/L are considered potentially harmful.

As for your original question about 400mg magnesium glycinate, have you been taking this all along, from when you originally started taking it with the D3 all those months ago? Or have you changed the form of magnesium and/or the dose?

i had my vit d level back a coupe of weeks ago and it was 107nmol/l so its fine, and im literally waiting right now for my zinc one to come back, so even though ive been taking a high level of vit d, im still at a safe level. That was what i have bought myself and not doctors prescribed.

The magnesium i had been taking on and off since may but not everyday etc and only 200-300mg a day when i did. Then i stopped for a month (last month) and now gone back to it again as i was getting eye twitching (which i got before i started mag last time) and that went after supplimenting

Considering how much D3 you have been taking, for the length of time you've been taking it, your level hasn't risen that much.

Are you taking a softgel or oral spray? If a softgel do you take it with the fattiest meal of the day.

Magnesium helps the body use D3 so it's essential to take that when taking D3.

im taking softgels susie, with k2-mk7 and mag (when i was taking it) thats mainly why i wanted to use the mag again because i was still on the vit d gels.

I do take the softgels with omega 3 to help absorbtion and usually with my evening meal at home as we have that quite early because of the kids.

I didnt want to over-do it with the mag before and thats why i stopped using it for a bit (wasnt sure how much i needed to go with the vit d etc) and also prob having absorbtion issues due to hashimotos/maybe leaky gut after months of antibiotics a while back.

As you have Hashi's, you will be better off with a D3 oral spray, eg BetterYou. This gives better absorption as it bypasses the gut and is absorbed through tissues in the mouth.

different types of magnesium serve different functions. Glycinate is very calming, thats why its best to use that type before bed. Magnesium malate is energising, citrate helps constipation etc etc all different benefits of each. Personally I take magnesium malate In the morning and glycinate in the evening. That way you utilise the benefits of the type you choose at the right time. Hope that helps.
