Suppressed T4 and TSH on NDT

Hello

I ordered some blood tests from Thriva and sent them in last Monday. Whilst the experience has been very efficient, the lancets provided in the kit really hurt my fingers and I had to wear plasters for five days!

I was disappointed to see that my T4 was still so low in the range. I take 1.5 grains of Thyroid-S twice per day, so I've upped it by another half as of Saturday 22nd Sept.

Does anyone have any advice based on my results?

Active B12: 173.0 pmol/L (25.1 - 165)

(I was taking Solgar B12 1000µg daily but stopped about a month ago so I could try to get a true reading for this blood test. Looks like it's a good job I stopped! I'm guessing I shouldn't take it for a while longer, but how often should I take it to maintain?)

Ferritin: 111 ug/L (13 - 150)

(As above, I was taking ferrous fumarate once per day but stopped about a month ago. How often should I take a supplement to maintain rather than raise?)

Folate: 7.96 nmol/L (8.83 - 60.8)

(I had a feeling this would be low as one of my friends who is a nurse said I looked anaemic! What supplement can I take to raise this one?)

TSH: 0.015 mIU/L (0.27 - 4.3)

(I'm taking NDT so I would expect my TSH to be suppressed. It usually sits around 0.37 so it's lower than usual at the moment.)

FT4: 11.8 pmol/L (12 - 23)

(I've raised my NDT by 1/2 a grain from 3 to 3.5, however I understand that NDT can cause suppressed T4 levels also?)

FT3: 5.16 pmol/L (3.1 - 6.8)

(This one seems OK but I would welcome any comments).

TT4: 67.6 nmol/L (66 - 181)

(As above, I've raised my NDT by 1/2 a grain, so I'm hoping to get this one up a bit).

TPO: 70.7 kIU/L (<34)

(I'm really happy about this one as it was 1017 the last time it was tested! I've made a lot of dietary changes which I'm hoping are behind the huge decrease).

TGAB: 213.0 kIU/L (<115)

(As above, I'm hoping to lower this one with continued dietary changes).

Vitamin D: 45.0 nmol/L (50 - 200)

(I've started my Cholecalciferol back up and I'm off on holiday this weekend, so hopefully this one will get a boost!)

Thank you in advance for any feedback or suggestions.

If you were taking B12, you should also have been taking a B complex. The Bs all work together and need to be kept balanced. So, if I were you, I would get a B complex with at least 400 mcg methylfolate. That will raise your folate and act as maintenance for your B12.

It's not certain that your dietary changes had anything to do with the lower antibody count. Antibodies fluctuate all the time, and are highest just after an immune system attack. But, even if you reduced your antibodies to nothing, you would still have Hashi's because the antibodies are not the disease. The antibodies do not do the attacking, they come along after the attack to clean up the traces of TPO/Ag that have leaked into the blood, where they shouldn't be. :)

Thank you for your reply, greygoose. I wasn't aware of the Bs all working together so I was just taking B12 on its own. I'll look into a B complex with methylfolate, thank you. Do you (or does anyone) have any experience of Jarrows B-Right Optimized B-Complex?

I've also learnt something new about the antibodies as well, so thanks! :)

No, I haven't. I take Igennus Super B-Complex. :)
