GP today and no B12 yet

Hi all.

I was told by my GP this morning that I needed another vitamin B12 test adding to my new blood test being done today before he will let me have a B12 injection. Endo suggested I ask the GP for one because of being vegetarian and my last test result was low. The GP's haven't received a letter off the Endo yet though (saw him a week ago) and so said that they like to have 2 sets of results before giving B12 due to them sometimes having miss tests. He also added a test for gastric parietal cells which he says they need to know because they effect absorbtion of B12 or something like that. Does this sound right to be told to wait for new results? He didn't mention Folate and neither did the Endo last week but I found out that was low too.

After seeing him I managed to get a few results off my last tests from the nurse who did the new bloods. (Well she tried but my veins were being shy so I ended up going to the hospoital phlebotomy centre.)

B12 196 (197-771)

Folate 2.1 (2.0-16.7)

Ferritin 60.9 (13-150)

No vit D ordered until just before I am due to see the Endo again.

Results on thyroid are in my other posts. Thanks.

AngieAsh,

B12 injection should be initiated 48 hours before you start taking folic acid. I thought intrinsic factor antibodies were preferred to gastric parietal antibodies to diagnose pernicious anaemia. healthunlocked.com/pasoc are the experts on pernicious anaemia, B12 and folate deficiency.

Ferritin is optimal halfway through range to 100. You could eat more iron rich food or supplement iron with 1,000mg vitamin C to aid absorption and minimise constipation. Take iron 4 hours away from thyroid meds.

Thanks Clutter.

These are what he ordered.

B12 Folate

gastric parietal cells

GFR calculated abbreviated MDRD (auto add)

Haemolysis check (needed in lab)

Urea and Electrolytes

Should I start iron before getting these results back or wait? Constipation isn't really a problem for me with the amount of fibre I eat, usually the opposite actually so would vit C still be needed? Tia

AngieAsh,

I would wait until after your blood tests. VitC aids absorption but if it makes you too loose don't take it.
