My Personal Clinical Trial News and Travails from the James at OSU and My Take on IV versus Oral Therapies.
Friends I spent 11 hours at DFW (Dallas airport) on Monday on my way to see Dr. Byrd, and I am flying back there tomorrow and they are calling for more thunderstorms. If you want to read the gruesome details and my pernicious reflections on what it means to be in a clinical trial on the other side

Can you get better from COPD
I was diagnosed with COPD 8 years ago. The doctor said it was mild at that time. I immediately gave up smoking, but have been on nicotine chewing gum ever since., now find it impossible to stop. My question is can your lungs get better or do they deteriorate over years. The Dr said I have 80 percent

DNR, DNAR, DNACPR, NFR. Confused what these acronyms mean? So are hospital staff. UK end of life directives are unethical says physician.
Turning the current 'Do not Resuscitate' process in hospitals upside down by using a Universal Form of Treatment Options (UTFO), enables hospital staff to actually be focusing on whether their goal is active treatment or optimal supportive care and could result in a 46% reduction in harm to patients,

Ask your questions of a CLL expert LIVE from ASCO
Dear CLL friends: While the big convention where blood cancers are discussed is the ASH (American Society of Hematology) meeting in early December, some research comes out at the ASCO medical meeting (American Society of Clinical Oncology) in early June in Chicago. Many CLL specialists attend this too

CLL/Richter's "Game Show" Video
See one woman's story of disbelieving a CLL diagnosis and then having another shoe drop, Richter's transformation. It's quite a journey. One can laugh now, as there is a happy result. http://www.patientpower.info/video/janet-o-brien-my-advice-for-cll-patients-with-richter-s-transformation

My original research on the effects of medical education on the management of geriatric anemia and especially MDS
As some of you may know, I have a background in medical education and just recently stepped away from a paid position as the medical director of a large medical educational nonprofit, Primary Care Network (PCN), so that I could devote my time to the unpaid position as the medical director of the nonprofit

More on Prograf
I have been reading Prograf experiences in recent days and it reminded me to alert you to my recent experience. I had a transplant in December 2011 and was on a reducing dose of all of my medications in the first 12-18 months after transplant. These stabilised in summer 2013 at 500mg x 2 of MMF and

Cardiac side effects from drugs: Predictable?
Hi All, Some of our therapy drugs i.e. Rituxan & Ibrutinib, have been associated with cardiac side effects for some patients. It would be interesting to know how sensitive this simulated heart model would be in testing CLL drugs. Not only is CLL expressed very differently - almost uniquely in each patient

ASH 2014: Dr. Kipps explains ROR1 and how CLL is really treated in the community
When I had a chance at ASH (American Society of Hematology) 2014 to interview my doctor, Dr. Tom Kipps, he first talked about the ROR1 trials that has recently opened at UCSD. This has been his research passion for years and is finally in trials. So far, so good. ROR1 holds the promise to be the perfect

Explainer: microRNA, the puppet master of the genome and its promise as a multi cancer drug
[i]"Up until about two decades ago, one type of RNA, called microRNA, or just miRNA – by virtue of them being very short, only 18-25 letters long – were thought to be the junk mail of the genome, with no biological function. But today we know that these miRNA are actually not junk but play a very important
