Appendicitis

Symptoms of appendicitis

Appendicitis typically starts with a pain in the middle of your tummy (abdomen) that may come and go.

Within hours, the pain travels to the lower right-hand side, where the appendix usually lies, and becomes constant and severe.

Pressing on this area, coughing or walking may make the pain worse.

You may lose your appetite, feel sick and have constipation or diarrhoea.

How appendicitis is treated

If you have appendicitis, it's likely your appendix will need to be removed as soon as possible.

Removal of the appendix, known as an appendicectomy or appendectomy, is 1 of the most common operations in the UK and its success rate is excellent.

It's most commonly carried out as keyhole surgery (laparoscopy).

Several small cuts are made in the abdomen, allowing special surgical instruments to be inserted.

Open surgery, where a larger, single cut is made in the abdomen, is usually used if the appendix has burst or access is more difficult.

It usually takes a couple of weeks to make a full recovery after your appendix has been removed.

But strenuous activities may need to be avoided for up to 6 weeks after having open surgery.

Appendicitis usually causes pain that starts in the middle of your tummy before moving towards the lower right side.

If you have appendicitis, you'll usually need surgery to remove your appendix as soon as possible.

What’s next!

In the past I have had a few episodes of appendicitis but my appendix is in a different place to a normal person! My GP says I’m a very interesting patient and sounded so enthusiastic! I’m not!

Strong immune system can hide serious infections

I had a perforated appendicitis pressing against my intestines. The signs of appendicitis is high fever, pain in that area, vomiting and a high white blood cell count. I only showed the high white blood cell count.

Help with blood results for my 10 year old daughter please.

She has been admitted twice with suspected appendicitis as the pain gets that bad she can’t move. It’s a sharp, burning pain and she says it’s like someone is squeezing her.

Very new and need reassurance

In the end, an appendix surgeon examined me to see if I had appendicitis, as he said it was his job to make sure that I did or didn’t need to go to theatre. After he checked me over, he said that he didn’t think it was appendicitis, and said I was well enough to leave A&E.

Had a CT scan when I had appendix out. Would they mention Cirrhosis if it was there?

I had appendicitis and had my appendix take out. I had a CT scan while in hospital. They mentioned that I had a Kidney stone on my discharge summary. I wondered if they would have mentioned Cirrhosis/ liver damage if it was present? Am worried as I am an alcoholic.

Chronic back, hip, leg pain. Sharp, twinge pain in right side of groin Could it be Endo?

A lot of my symptoms point to appendicitis but it can't be this as it has been nearly a year of this pain!

All my tests come back negative

Spent a day with the NHS today, to explore possible appendicitis, after the antibiotics didn't help what doc thought was a UTI. Inflammatory Markers - normal. In fact, my blood is great, apparently! CT scan of my pelvis shows all healthy and normal.

Worried sick - need reassurance and hand hold, worried for nothing?

Sent me to A&E to rule out masses or appendicitis, nothing found on pelvic/ abdominal ultrasound, bloods okay. But I wasn’t satisfied, and I’m fully convinced I would’ve never thought OC if I hadn’t googled.

Some good news for a change!

I'm hopeful that my abdomen and flank pain, which I insisted be further explored by my team and resulted in my drop back to Urology with my oncologists, resulted in the diagnosis of suspected Appendicitis that actually discovered my mets.

Is this really ibs?

I have had a few episodes since with the pain getting worse which they looked at my bowels, bladder, ovaries and even checked me for appendicitis which was all clear. About 6 weeks ago I had a raised calprotectin level and was told to repeat again which I have and I am waiting on result.
