Last week sometime, Libs answered a question on here suggesting self hypnosis when visiting the dentist. I really would like to know more on this subject as i have a true phobia of dentists and one of my top teeth has just broken in half! I have no pain yet but i know its coming and im terrified! Can anyone help please? xx

self hypnosis for dentist
Actually, I think that might have been me. I certainly use it! Think I'm the only patient my dentist has had fall asleep during a root canal.
If you can see a hypnotherapist, they can help you to learn self-hypnosis techniques for relaxation and pain management. Otherwise, there are lots of self-hypnosis CDs, tracks and videos out there - check youtube for free samples.
I can vouch that self-hypnosis, in certain settings, can have a definite effect in reducing (or eliminating) painful stimuli. I have limited experience with it due to it not being a good technique for dealing with my pain (due to the necessity for beginners to be essentially still and laying down) but it sounds like it could DEFINITELY be a viable option for your situation.
I also think it's wise to add that to the best of my knowledge the regulation of hypnotherapists is fairly lax, so consider researching potential therapists and asking for credentials prior to making appointments with them.
My dentist specialises in treating nervous patients, and sometimes refers them to a hynotherapist.
We had one lady who was in agony, and came through the door with her daughter pulling her, and her husband pushing her - she was that terrified of dental treatment!
Six months later, we couldn't get rid of her - she wanted every treatment in the book - so obviously the hypnosis had worked pretty well!

Wow! Really?Think this is deffo an option to look at, thank you everyone xx
Just keep reminding yourself that modern dentistry never hurts.
The best thing is to grab your dentist by the wotsits, and tell him that if you feel any pain, you will squeeze HARD!
I find this very effective, and now I'm not a bit scared of my dentist.
Unfortunately he's pretty scared of me!
