I wouldn't do it if you paid me! It used to be called an enema. The pain and cramps it causes are worse than a prepared laxative, which I believe picolax is. I have had to have an enema. Don't do it, is my opinion 🐸

Hi there,

normally a Colonoscopy requires bowel preparations to start 48 hours before the procedure.  The bowel has to be completely empty in order for the scope to get clear pictures.

You mention "my virtual Colonoscopy done as a scan".  perhaps that is a different procedure which needs only mild bowel preparation.  In which case it will be the dreaded Picolax ( I also hate it).

What I understand Colonic Irrigation to be is not normally done, but if you mean an Enema, that isn't suitable for a complete bowel clearance on its own.

If I were you I would discuss your worries with the nurse, and ask if there was any other laxative other than Picolax.

Just a little tip, follow the preparation to the letter, as if you haven't cleared your bowel completely, and they can't get a proper view, they stop.  That means you have to do it all again. 😩

Good luck, and I hope it goes well.

GP. 😀

Colonic irrigation doesn't reach all,of the bowel only the first part. Ok I can't rember what it's called but anyway it doesn't so your bowel would not be empty. I had the virtual one done last year and the bowel prep was not as bad as I thought it was going to be, I have had worse, gl x

Hi Blackwidow4u

I sincerely hope that you are feeling as well as you possibly can be today?

I have pasted you a couple of links below relating to this, the first is a leaflet style pdf file that looks at Picolax, and what you have to do beforehand, so it is doubtful that you will be having this unless they have told you otherwise? There is preparation needed with this as ''Greenpeace'' says:

ouh.nhs.uk/patient-guide/le...

The other link looks at the procedure itself, so I sincerely hope that this can help put your mind at ease:

patient.info/health/colonos...

I want to genuinely and sincerely wish you all the best of luck with your examination, and please take care of yourself.

All my hopes and dreams for you

Ken

Thanks admin..I know the procedure thanks.. Its just the clearing out bit that makes me so I'll..so I'm off to docs Tues to see if he can give me something for the chronic cramps for 8 hrs I get....other than buscopan which I already take..

Sounds awful! Good luck my friend and all the best for this.

Hi ask for a different prep, explain, this one makes you very ill, I am sure they can try something else. Good luck with the procedure.

Thanks for yr comments..I was hoping the colonic irrigation was the answer but doesn't sound like it would be a good choice..I've had it done before doing it for days with the dreadful picolax..Following instructions to the letter..I had two days of chronic cramps & dizzy faints..ended up the hospital passed out in loo,s & nurses carrying back into ward..So I'm not looking forward to all that again?

I recently had a colonoscopy, with picolax and I was pleasantly surprised, as I only had a few cramps through the night and no tummy pain on going to the loo. Don't know if I was just lucky, but was glad I'd imagined the very worst to just be proved wrong. Hopefully this time it won't be as bad as last time and you will be able to wonder what was I so worried about. Good Luck with it, let us know how u get on,

Val

God yr so lucky..I'm dreading it after last experience.. Just hoping the doc can give me something to stop the cramps & feeling faint on going? A friend of mine in the same ward was carried in by four nurses as she banged her head on fainting in the loo..so she had to stay in an day so they could keep an eye on her..so its not just me...lol

Hello Blackwidow4u,,,I thought they had stopped using picolax,,,and now use the newer type enemas,,,,which can be given while you are at the hospital,,,,a quick ask the place of appointment, what they do require doing,,,,,if you find you cannot manage they can administer it while you are there,,,,,,good luck for the day,,,ttfn from Karen.

Well Ive had my Virtual Colonoscopy results back..For people that dont know the diff between the ordinary one is this one is less invasive ..Its done with a tube inserted into bowel & gas blown in to inflate the bowel ready for pics..They took over 800 images of everything from colon, spleen, liver, kidneys, ovaries & pelvic area..I didnt want to have months of going back to & fro with millions of tests..Paid to have it done private via Lifescan..The prep was the same but I got my Doc to give me Diazepan to help get thru the 3 days of Picolax & Gastrografin I had to take ..it made things just calm & easier as Im always bad with it..The results were far better than I imagined no polyps or anything all ok..So its back to the drawing board to work out whats causing all these pains Ive done everything I can think off to do with allergies, exclusion diets..just keep getting told its IBS..grrrr
