Hysteroscopy Experiences and Recovery?

I have just received an appointment for a Hysteroscopy in just over two weeks time following being diagnosed with Endo and Adeno. I'm very nervous as I have had colposcopies in the past which I found uncomfortable. They are planning to carry out the procedure and also take biopsies of my cervix at the same time. I'm told it will be done under local anasthetic.

Wondering if anyone else has had this procedure at all? How was it and did you need any recover time at all? I'll need to let my work know so want to ensure I have time I need as my job can be physical and involve lots of driving.

Thanks it advance!

Ouch - I had a biopsy in a regular appointment and it was excruciating. 100x more painful than a smear test.

I am having hysteroscopy and laparoscopy on Wednesday under general anasthetic. You can request this instead.

They say some women hardly feel it on some of the Endometriosis UK Youtube Webinars.

I feel everything. I don't think I'm a wimp, I put up with a lot, but it made me make all sorts of noises I haven't heard me make before and cry. I wasn't expecting the levels of pain. I bled for 3 weeks and had awful cramps for days after. Sorry its not reassuring, honestly if it were me I'd email the gynae secretary and say its not for you, ask for it to be under general.

Thank you for your response. I hope your procedure goes well on Wednesday and you have a speedy recovery!

My issue is this is being done under general gyno, and once this is done they will refer me to an endo specialist as i cant have two referrals open at the same time apparently.

I'm worried if I cancel it I will have to wait even longer and be no further forward in knowing how bad things are!

I've had a cervical biopsy and it was awful, but hoping with local it won't be as bad. I honestly feel so sick just thinking about it. I feel I need to try and if I can't tolerate it push for it under general.

I had a hysteroscopy a few months ago & was terrified beforehand as I’d read so much on the internet about how painful some women find it. However I had a really positive experience, had a fantastic team and luckily hardly felt any pain at all. You can stop at any time if it becomes too painful. I wanted to offer an alternative experience as not everyone finds it painful, although I appreciate that some women do. You may have some bleeding and cramps afterwards so it might be an idea to take the next day off work. Hope it goes well for you.

Thank you so much for your response. Its really reassuring that you had a positive experience. Did you have the local anaesthetic? What was your recovery like after?

I asked for local anaesthetic, I think it must have been a gel/cream as I didn’t feel them doing it ! I bled a bit and had some cramps afterwards but nothing that stopped me doing my day to day stuff.

Thank you, hoping I have a similar experience to you. Fingers crossed!

I hope so too ! I just went into it thinking that I’d just give it a try, and that I would stop if it was too painful, but it was fine (I have had different procedures that I found very painful). Fingers crossed for you ☺️

I had two goes at this without anesthetic they don't put the local in till they get right in and I was in so much pain I couldn't cope with it. The third I had a spinal for it but I struggled with pain for about two or three weeks after. Everyone's different so pleased don't take my experience as a given. When you research it with what we have it says you shouldn't accept it with a local. I wish I had read it first. After they tried I barely got back to my car I was in that much discomfort.

Tha k you for your reply, so you was in pain them just putting the scope in? Honestly, I find smears so uncomfortable and last time I had a cervical biopsy it was agonising. I'm so nervous but have my pre-assessment on Friday so may speak to them when I am there.

I'm worried if I cancel it, I might be delayed further and won't know how bad things are. So part of me is wanting to just try and see how I manage. Then if not pushing for it with general.

I haven't had any discomfort from smears but was awful at hystoscopy I kept trying they gave me gas but it hurt really bad. They said if you have anaesthetic it will be months in the end it was in two weeks 🙂. You might be fine but I Def struggled.
