Hysteroscopy For Fitting Mierena

Hi all, saw my NHS Gyne the other day. He has booked me in to see him in July to have a Hysteroscopy, in order to fit the Mirena Coil. From my previous and only lap and internal ultrasounds he can see that my uterus is retroverted.

Quite nervous about having the mini procedure done and I normally find speculums and internals painful. I have explained all this to Gyne, he's reassured me that we can stop at any time.

Just wondering if any of you have had Mirena fitted successfully this way?

How painful/uncomfortable is the procedure?

Also if there's any advice/anything that might be beneficial for me to know when it comes to having this done?

I'm having a hysteroscopy next month, but I've been advised to take painkillers (co-codamol and ibuprofen), and I've been offered gas and air (Entonox). There's also local anesthetic available, so if you find the procedure uncomfortable or painful, do let your gynae know. Unless there's someone who's already experienced this and responds to this post, I'll let you know my experience if you want

Hey, thanks for responding. If you're happy to let me know how you get on with your hysteroscopy that would be great! I've been advised to take co codomal and mefenamic acid beforehand aswell. He spoke to me about a local anesthetic gel he can use but that was it, I'll speak to him about other anesthesia options beforehand

It’s not a procedure I’ve had done, but if you’re in the UK it’d be worth checking out the Campaign Against Painful Hysteroscopy as they have lots of advice about your options for pain management and anaesthesia. Not to worry you, but because it’s good to be informed - 1 in 3 women experience severe pain during a hysteroscopy. You have a right to have this procedure under local or general anaesthetic if you want, though it’s common for NHS hospitals not to tell patients this, as it’s much cheaper to do without anaesthesia or pain relief. You’re definitely doing the right thing researching this procedure in advance so that you can make informed choice about what’s right for you and your body.

I would most definitely look into what CathyEarnshaw has said above.

I recently had a hysteroscopy, endometrial biopsy and mirena coil fitted at same time to help with endo. I was not given the option for any anaesthetic (local or general) or told this was even possible. It was extremely painful for me to the point I was crying. I have also had a lot of pain since the procedure which I’m aware can be normal and can take a while for things to settle down.

Everyone is different and we all have different pain thresholds etc. I have a friend who had the same procedure and states she only felt a little mild discomfort and was fine x

Thanks for responding and for the advice I'm definitely going to look into everything that's been said and the anesthetic side of things. I'd definitely rather have it done with some sort of anesthetic as I find the speculums and internals painful enough as it is.

I forgot to mention I also have a retroverted uterus. I am usually ok with speculums, internal examinations etc but really struggled with this. I did express concerns prior to the procedure about pain and was told I ‘had to at least try’!! But as I said anaesthetic was not offered or discussed. I wish I knew there were options x

I have a uterus retroverted. Sorry mine didn't go well and a aborted. Since then many hystocope I very had all I had to be done under a proper Day Surgery. Even with anthestics I was pretty unwell for 2days.

I’ve had two hysterscopes the first one under a GA where the mirena coil was fitted. I had other tests and biopsies at the same time so it was uncomfortable for a few days after and mirena made me feel sick for a couple of weeks, but it was ok after.

The second hysterscope was done without anaesthetic and was not pleasant, I don’t want to worry you the actual hysterscope was fine it was the biopsies that were taken were so painful I was screaming and no the consultant didn’t stop. I passed out after the last biopsy, I’d gone alone thinking I wouldn’t be having the hysterscope as the literature I’d be given said if you faint during periods they’d rebook for a GA but it wasn’t offered and I was pushed to have it done. Never again will I have a procedure like that without proper pain relief.

Thanks for responding and sharing your experiences with me. I don't think any biopsies are being taken, think it's just the Mirena being fitted to my knowledge so hopefully won't be too painful 😐 I'm going to look into anesthetic, ask what options are available beforehand and say that I want some form before having it done. Cos the general conesntious is not to have it done without.
