UKPDS has been conducting studies on Diabetes since 1977 and during last 42 years they have generated 93 original research papers based upon their trial studies on large number of Diabetes. It is a Bible on diabetes .. giving below few links.....the first link gives the brief summary ... and the second link you must read as it is and then you can go to different sub-linkages...

It is very interesting and if you are a diabetic, you must read the entire research papers and keep in your desktop for future reference.....irrespective of the current status of your condition ...it will answer many questions with regards to various options including medications.

We all know that Diabetes is a progressive disease and our primary goal is to delay the progression of the disease and avoid diabetic complications.

(1) With a hope to control our blood sugar, We bring in change in our life style, drastic change in our Food habits , do extensive physical exercise....

On Food for diabetics, many of us succeed controlling blood sugars with a strict LCHF diet, and some get success with a moderate carb diet, and others with Mediterranean/ DASH diet....yet many others like a Palio Diet, Vegan, Carnivores, Herbivores , omnivores and the list is endless....

(2) Whatever diet you follow -Be happy as long as you bring down your Hba1c below 6....

Along with your Hba1c, you must also check your weight from time to time - is it increasing or decreasing - Your Blood Pressure readings - Your lipid profile -kidney/ Liver function test, Thyroid , USG of whole abdomen, 2D Ecko , Tread mill test, Dexa for BMD, hsCRP, Vit B12 & Vit D. Blood insulin & C-Peptide Test is a must to see if your pancreas produces a reasonable amount of Insulin. Eye and Podiatry test once a year is recommended...

(3) To maintain a Healthy weight with a BMI of 21-24 Is considered Ideal for diabetes.... It helps for an obese diabete to reduce some weight and for a thin type diabete with BMI of 18-20, it would be helpful to put on some weight...In any case if a thin type diabete is rapidly losing weight , he would need immediate medical attention.....

(4) You need to take action if some of the above parameters as mentioned in 2 & 3 are out of range.... Don't hesitate to consult your physician or respective specialist / Endochrinolgist...

(5) And if you are not able to control your blood sugar in spite of best efforts with change in food habits, exercise and life style- don't get worried...but don't live with the problem and dont waste time and welcome diabetic complications...

Seek medical advice....

Your doctor has a lot of suggestions at his disposal to treat you ... ...he may first put you on Metformin ...and if required, he can add a sulfonylurea or Pioglitazine ... And then a DPP4 inhibitor..SGLT-2 inhibitor....

If all these fail, then of course, nowadays USFDA Approved GLP1 insulin injections once a week is available... the daily insulin is also very popular.... and people live with insulin for ages.....CGM ... Dexcom...

As a way forward, science has discovered islet transplant and the robotic pancreas transplant nowadays can be done with everyone who wants an insulin free life...

That is where institutes like UKPDS come in to picture who keep conducting studies/research and validate some of the newly invented/discovered treatments to make our life much easier....

But, the most important thing and main stay remains is the food we eat, life style and physical exercise. If we follow these things right, then medicines can be avoided or minimised..

Unfortunately, nutrition continues to remain a highly controversial subject... If you search Google....many times you would find conflicting reports, though it can definitely teach you some of the fundamentals...

HU has given us a nice platform to learn and share and exchange our views... Let us make best use of it by posting our own experience on food habits, life style change and how it helped in controlling the blood glucose and it's complications.

Very good post, This is because I had a look at some of the information the other day. I had a 12- lead stress test and an echo cardiogram, last week I had a 24-hour heart monitor, my GP felt it is better to go for a dynamic rather then a static PQRS waves..

It is imperative members do understand the basic and fundamentals of blood test measurements and unit of measurements. Hidden and free sugar in food and drinks. The amount of sugar in grain from carb!!!

Maths or any language we need to get to the basic to fully understand it, when I was small one of the boys sell breakfast before going to school, he had difficulty in collecting the correct money, as we lived near a railway track we used the stones from the railway tract to help him to understand the money collection. The same thing applies to any unit of measurements.

I had to Google to fully understand some of the terminology. Let us hope we have a good discussion and Q&A.

Thanks.

This is a fantastic and informative posting, namaha . Thank you for posting it.😀👍

Yes, using a CGM, can be extremely helpful for tighter blood sugar control. I’ve been using my CGM for 4.5 years and it’s helped me during the night hours since I tend to be lower while sleeping. It alarms when I’m under 80 mg/dl.
