W8R1 good run but now resting ankle 🙄

Did this run yesterday in thankfully cooler weather. Part way round I developed a niggle on the inside of my left ankle 🥴 Having read other posts I’ve carefully been alternating pavements so as not to always be running on the same camber. I had no trouble in finishing but was a bit concerned as there was a bit of puffiness, although no pain or discomfort to walk on. I’m lucky enough that No. 2 son is a physio. altho’ him in Cardiff and me in Toronto, not hugely helpful for hands on treatment 😂 So by the marvels of technology we had a socially distanced assessment, but I had to confess what I’ve been up to!! He was hugely supportive and diagnosed only some sort of soft tissue injury 🤞and told me I was doing all the right things... ibuprofen, ice pack etc.. but sooooo annoyingly instructed me not to run or even do my speedy day off walks until it’s no longer tender. So frustrating with only 5 runs to go but I know he’s right and I’ve read enough posts on here from those on the injury couch not to risk further damage. He thinks it’ll settle in a couple of days if I’m a good girl so hope to be out again very soon following a couple of days of RICE.

I knew it....it was because I wasn’t wearing my 🎄🩲 🙈😅

Good luck to all those graduating in a run or two, I can’t wait to read your posts 🎉 and to those at the end of W7/start of W8 I still hope to be heading over the finish line with you 🏃‍♀️🤞🙏

Oh no! Fellow runner 🏃‍♀️ that’s just flipping typical when you’re/we’re so close to the end of the programme.

I now know which pants you’re going to be wearing for the rest of your runs! 😂

Blooming good that your son’s a physio and you know to be sensible but that it’s nothing serious😊 Has your son still been sworn to secrecy so your husband doesn’t know?

Rest day for me today and probably tomorrow if the weather is going to be as bad as they say it is so I’m pretty sure we’ll still get to the finishing line around the same time 🥳

Keep up with the ice and rest. Week 8... can you believe it?!

Yup, sworn to secrecy 😂 he was so surprised but pleased I’m doing the programme. My husband keeps asking how on earth I’ve done it 🤷‍♀️ I truly can’t believe he hasn’t guessed 🙈

It’s definitely less puffy this morning so will be spending another day watching the French open tennis 👏 and continuing with the rest and ice. I feel so lazy though, especially not having even been out for a walk for a couple of days 🥴

Sorry the weather is going to be so horrid at home, hope you can get out again soon 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️

What rotten luck, but how handy to have a physio ‘on tap’...even it’s only a virtual one 😆

Defo should have worn those 🍀🎄🩲🤣

Rest up and hopefully you’ll be back at/after the weekend 🤞

Thanks Lottie, definitely quite a bit better this morning so hopefully will be able to resume in a day or two complete with 🎄🩲I think 😂 Good luck with your next one, we’re very close now 💪🏃‍♀️🎉

Yup 👍 it’s definitely improved this morning so will continue. Shan’t go out without 🎄🩲 🤣 I’m also going to take a leaf out of your book and be a bit more ‘thoughtless’ on my next run and just meander around our local roads!

You’re so close to finishing now so good luck with your last 2 and I really look forward to reading your graduation post 😊

Ohh, Cazza, what a pain in the bum. So sorry to read this. Don’t sweat it though, you’re doing the right thing with rest. As frustrating as it will feel, what’s a week or two in the grand scheme of things? You’re team mates won’t leave you behind, everyone will await your finish line crossing when you’re good and ready.

Sorry to hear you had to disclose your scheming! Is son keeping the secret safe for now or is it not really workable?

Thanks CC 😊 Yup, secret still safe 😂 Due to the time difference I can speak to those at home when Mr W is at work! Can’t believe he still doesn’t suspect, he thinks I’ve caused it by overdoing the fast walking, which, let’s face it is what my running is really 🐌🐢 😂

That’s great you get to finish your journey before you tell him! 🐒

Hi there Stumbled across your post having just completed W8R2 3 days ago and found my left ankle really troubled at the end of it :(

I've been icing, compressing etc but was horrible not to go for today's run.

Can I ask how long you waited before you ran again on yours?

Hope you got finished in the end

Hi and sorry to hear about your ankle problem, it’s so frustrating isn’t it 😣 I was so hacked off it was going to delay my graduation as until then it had all gone smoothly. Mine was tendonitis starting at the bottom inside of my ankle bone (medial malleollus) tracking upwards a few inches with swelling . I do have a history of overpronating and think having slopped around all summer in flat flip flops didn’t help. I was ok in my new supportive trainers for shorter runs but it became problematic once doing longer consistent distances. I did end up getting some special insoles to go in them. I initially left it about 3-4 days I think, then my physio son told me if I could jump up and down on it for a minute, and jump forward about a metre on it without problems to try again but to start with shorter distances. I think I went back to 15 then 20 mins initially then gradually increased again. I did have a couple of setbacks again when I needed to rest and ice it, then it settled and was fine with insoles and an ankle support. My son said that it’s an injury that will recover well if treated correctly early but will become majorly problematic if it becomes too bad. I put my sensible head on and decided that graduation would wait! I think in the end it only delayed me by a week or two. I was running 30 min. consolidation runs 3 times a week up to 3 weeks ago, but have been unwell (something else 🙄) and it’ll be a week or so more til I can get out again. Not sure how that’ll be, apparently you don’t lose much fitness in 2 weeks but it’ll be 4+ so I’ll just see what I can manage and increase as I feel able. The good thing is that the rest has completely sorted my ankle out! Did your injury come on out of the blue? Do you have proper trainers following gait analysis, if not I highly recommend it, as do most others on this forum.

Sorry, this is rather a long reply and maybe more than you wanted 😬

I hope your problem clears up soon. I do feel very strongly now that it’s definitely not worth risking a long term problem and an extended period on the injury couch for short term gain.

Once you’ve graduated the pressure seems to come off and following consolidation everyone’s running journey then becomes very different, some doing less runs, some shorter, some longer, some quicker or a mixture depending on your goals. There’s loads of great advice in Consolidation Club and suggestions on programmes. There’s Bridge to 10k too.

Good luck 😊 hope this had been helpful but apologies for wittering on 🥴

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply and a really brilliant helpful reply. Honestly I couldn't have asked for more! Mine is exactly in that spot. I ran W8R1 and my ankle felt iffy after then stupidly ran R2 and that was when I knew it was a problem needed sorting. Unbelievably frustrating as up to now it had gone really well running every other day.

I did graduate winter last year but crocked my knee - over extended it at work! - right at the end so didn't keep up the running but have walked loads in lockdown and enjoyed C25K so much more this time.

Thanks for all the advice - will read it carefully - I also realised I run the same route - a local lane - and Ione uphill / downhill section has a camber so that may not help.

Congratulations on your journey you've been really encouraging 🤗

Glad it was helpful and if you’ve done the programme before you’ll know more than me 😂 Hope things improve soon, would love to know how you progress. Good luck 😊
