Forced break

Sitting watching my phone, glanced up at the tv & noticed a dark patch at the bottom left of my eye. Thought it would clear overnight but still there, so called 111. The upshot was I had a TIA & am now on assorted tablets for 4 weeks at least. The worst part was that I wasn't to do any vigorous exercise for 4 weeks. Well now it's 3 weeks & I thought it's time for a gentle run, so back to c25k, week 3 run 1. I didn't think I really liked running (plodding) but it was so good to get outside again in the sunshine.

Once it’s got you it’s got you. You may ‘sleep’ from running for a bit and then the running spirit decides enough is enough and before you know it, the trainers are laced and your feet are heading out of the door carrying a somewhat bemused body with them!

Best of luck with the TIA recovery and so pleased for you that you had sun waiting for you for your first recovery pootle

I've got to get back to 10k as I've entered a 10k in Benidorm in November!

Oh my goodness, that's scary, and sounds to me, at least, like the sort of thing you should listen to your doctor on, or at least get their clearance to run again. One more week is not much to wait.

None of us are doctors here, and are not qualified to give medical advice, I would hate for something to happen and we had all said "yes, go for it"

To clarify this, I recently had a very minor surgery and was told not to run for at least as week, I did what I was told. Sorry if this is not what you want to hear.

I was told not to take part in vigorous exercise but continue walking then gently increase the tempo. I don't have any follow up till June when I have an online consultation, but will be seeing the GP shortly.

Hi Jonwil. So sorry to hear about your health difficulties.

Can I encourage you to listen to the medical advice you’ve been given by your real-life medical professionals? They’re in the best place to advise you about your comeback. It’s worth taking things at the pace they suggest to give yourself the best chance of staying healthy and off the injury couch. That’s always the position we take here as admins. Many of us have had illness and injuries ourselves with all frustrations and setbacks they come with. We know how difficult it is to play safe and listen to the doctor/physio/whoever when we’re itching to run again. You’ll find a lot of sympathy here!

It’s worth it though. The runs will wait. Your heath is more important.

Sending lots of good wishes for your recovery ❤️‍🩹

To echo what MissUnderstanding says, it's really important to follow medical advice. Maybe you could speak to your GP and ask for more guidance on when it'll be safe to run again. My guess is they'll be delighted you actually want to exercise, so many health issues are made worse by being sedentary...but I'm not a doctor. They are the ones to advise you.Good luck with your recovery 😁

MissUnderstanding is absolutely correct. Please do, as we always advise, get the expert opinion on what you should, or should not be doing.

The guidelines they give you, are the one to be followed, to keep you safe and well.

As MissU says, to is very, frustrating to be on the IC, but at this early stage, before your next consultation, see your GP and have a really good chat...Gentle walks are one thing, running, even slowly is very different.

Better safe than sorry and... those runs are so, so patient. Until then...we would advise you not to run.

Do please, keep us posted. x

It is really frustrating when we can’t run but it’s best to follow Doctors orders so you come back strong!

I can’t do much at all at the moment due to an awful virus and perforated ear drums it’s like being incarcerated so I get where you are coming from plus the weather has been gorgeous !

Stay safe get well you can put off the run until next year x

An issue with medical communication here and them maybe not ensuring there's a shared understanding of exactly what is meant by 'no vigorous exercise for 4 weeks' or *why*... I say this because I wouldn't think of my own running as vigorous (and nor would anyone else if they saw me, or my stats)... but all running is 'high impact' and that might be the issue here.

Yes, that's a good point, and as far as my own small surgery went I was told nothing that would raise my blood pressure - no arm or leg swings, no squats, none of my usual gentle stretching etc
