I first noticed blood in the toilet December 2023.
I had my colonoscopy done June 2024, cleanest colon he's ever seen he said LOL. Yay for that!
It's now August 2024, and for the last 2-3 weeks, I have had bright red blood in the toilet again, only in the morning, which is also the only time I "go".
I was diagnosed with internal hemorrhoids, but can they make the toilet look like a mu*rder scene DAILY? I don't have constipation, so I'm not having to "push" anything out, so what gives?
I want to add that I am sugar-free, low carb, and anything sweet I eat is fake sugar, which can definitely be a culprit in the ease of me going every morning. If you know, you know.
I had also started taking a new digestive aid / enzymes, and I stopped those to see if maybe that was contributing to this, but I'm guessing not since I am still bleeding.
I have a tele-call with the Dr. that did my colonoscopy to ask him these same questions, but wondering if anyone has any experience with this. I went through Colonoscopy Assist (best thing ever for uninsured) so he's not "my" Dr., but I am super thankful he is willing to do a video call with me, and I'm hoping to get some answers.
If I look at the big picture, I have been bleeding since December 2023, off and on, but more recently it's been more on.
Feel fine health wise, but I *understandably* now have bathroom anxiety, and I know that doesn't help. I just "mind over matter" my days to get through them.
I guess I'm just wondering if it's possible that the sugar free crap I eat is the culprit, or if the Benadryl I take every night to help me sleep is causing this.
Anyone ever have a clear colonoscopy and then continued to bleed a mu*rder scene, and what was your outcome? I don't drink (QUIT July 2022 🎉), I don't take NSAID's or aspirin, I do vape and I am addicted to iced coffee.
Maybe it's my stomach. Maybe I need an endoscopy.

Hopefully your doctor will be able to help. I had colonoscopy and gastroscopy and small bowel capsule endoscopy. I have diverticulitis and gastritis and inflamed parts of the intestines, which maybe autoimmune related. Yes i still see blood and im also iron deficient and need iron tablets. None of the above really fully explains the red blood but maybe the diverticulitis in part. So im stuck with no further work up and I worry that the gastroenterologist missed something. This seems unlikely im told if the prep was good. At least your colonoscopy was good. Best wishes for your health.
I appreciate your response! I really hope he can too, because this makes no sense to me. How did you discover you were iron deficient, and was / is that due to losing so much blood every time you "go"?
No . It was by chance because I was getting heart pain and palpitations and then they checked ferretin which was just 16. Blood loss may play a part in my case I think, but there maybe other things going on.
Oh my goodness! I am losing *seemingly* a lot of blood every, single, morning but I know it doesn't take much to make it look really bad. To be honest, I don't even know if it's "in" my stool, or just coming out my backend in general. Ugh, so tired of this. I was walking on Cloud 9 with my colonoscopy results, and now feeling really scared. I'm going to see if he will order labs for me, I need to start somewhere.
Thanks for posting with us. Any time there is blood in the stool it needs to have a definitive answer and I see you on your way to getting just that. Don't stop until you do.
You may need an endoscopy. I was low iron and did a colonoscopy which was clean. The endoscopy showed a nasty ulcer in my stomach which was the culprit. I was 52 at the time.🤔
Keep after those answers. Please let us know what you find out. I hope you can put this behind you soon.❤️👍
Dmarie I’ve had polyps removed and 3 colonoscopies in the last 9 years.
The last one as my FIT came back positive for blood in stool. I have like you piles (hemorrhoids) I’ve got my next FIT through and I’m expecting that to be positive.
I eat healthily I haven’t lost a lot of weight and apart from the daily toll of work feel fine.
Sometimes and I’ve been there we look for things that aren’t there. Be aware of Dr Google, I think you’ll be fine and your doctor will confirm that. X
I spoke to the Dr. on Wednesday (9/4), however, felt like I didn't even need the appointment anymore because I believe I pinpointed what the issue was.
I had started taking a Magnesium Citrate supplement, 500mg every night since December of 2023 (when I first saw blood in the toilet). If you know anything about Mag Cit, you know that it helps with not only muscle relief and sleep, but also acts as a laxative. Makes sense, right, I would take it at night, and then potty every morning and LOTS of🩸 in the toilet. Ugly stools, the whole nine yards.
Last week, while still on my search for what could have been causing my issues, I saw that the daily recommended amount for Mag Cit is 100mg!!!!!! EPIPHANY!
I stopped taking the Mag Cit a week before my appointment and lo' and behold, each day, 🩸 was less and less and less and has completely STOPPED. Have had ZERO 🩸 for 5 days straight!
I also started taking Psyllium Husk (powder) every day to bulk up my stool, and I cannot tell you what a difference these changes have made overall, in my gut health.
I told the Dr. the changes I have made, and he told me "sounds like you figured it out!" He said he was not worried about me saying I was bleeding, because I had no polyps, no signs of any diverticulitis, no nothing at all and only the internal hemorrhoids. He also said that the Psyllium Husk is the best thing I could be taking and to keep that up. Oh, AND, I had NO IDEA that diarrhea could cause internal hemorrhoids to bleed, and always thought you had to be straining or constipated to irritate them. Nope, I had diarrhea every morning from eating the damn sugar-free chocolate covered peanuts every night! Which by the way, I tested that theory again recently, and the sugar alcohols are definitely not the culprit.
Also, if you think about the prep mix, mine was GaviLyte, which has the same properties as Magnesium Citrate saline in the bottle, that is also sometimes used for prep. By the end of my GaviLyte prep, I was excreting blood from my tail end (see graphic photo). It all makes sense now.
Whatever is in Magnesium Citrate does not agree with my body AT all.
GCCA-Survior, I wondered too if not my colon, then perhaps a stomach ulcer, but for the time being, I am ruling that out since all of these symptoms have completely stopped. ***Afterthought, I can't help but wonder though, if the Mag Cit was upsetting an ulcer maybe I already have and may get that checked out anyway to be on the safe side.
I don't know if my story will help the next person, but I would definitely say to look at what supplements you're taking, take Psyllium Husk if you can, get your fiber somehow, change your diet, look at your gut health. It's not the end-all be-all for sure, but for me, it appears it was, and I am so thankful I did research the effects of what I was putting in my body.
Hi Dmarie123 .. I’m glad to hear that the blood has stopped👏👏👏. As they say, you are your own best doctor. And that’s great information for a lot of people👍. These days there seems to be a supplement that can solve about anything🤔. It’s almost like you could quit eating and just take supplements all day long LOL😁😂.
Please know that you will definitely be helping out the “next person”.👍👏❤️ There is one thing I’m not understanding ... if the mag cit was causing the bleeding, where was the bleeding coming from? Perhaps there is something somewhere that is getting aggravated and thus bleeds. But again, there’s something that is bleeding🤔😲. It's great it has stopped, but it’s probably still there but in a happy condition😃. Not quite sure how to express that.🤔
What are your thoughts on that?
Also, It is great that you used colonoscopy assist. I would like to hear more about your experience with using that. Perhaps start a completely different“post” talking about colonoscopy assist when you don't have insurance. I love that program and it's great that you used it. I'm not sure how many people actually know about it?
You are so right that it seems like there is a supplement for everything, and you’re not far off that we could just stop eating altogether 😂 I do believe I need to find out what was not happy in my body that now appears to be happy by stopping the magnesium citrate. I am still completely normal, but it’s intriguing to know what the cause was. I recently got health insurance, so I’m on a mission to get everything sorted out. The word DEFINITELY needs to get out about colonoscopyassist.com! It was a financial LIFESAVER, as far as being able to pay out of pocket and put my mind at ease, since I was uninsured. One flat fee of $1275 covers the procedure, sedation, removal of polyps and pathology and a follow up appointment. I didn’t have any polyps, so I can’t expand on that part as far as what did it feel like, how was recovery, how long for results etc. but this program is open to all U.S. residents and the process was EASY. You just go to the website, type in your zip code, it brings up all Dr’s. in your area that participate in the program, and then you pick the one you want to go with. I researched each Dr. before landing with the one I went with. This isn’t an income based program, it is simply to make it more affordable for people that may be uninsured or maybe don’t want to file on their insurance. You can pay whatever amount toward it when you schedule the appointment and full balance is due 1 week prior to appointment. Very organized, they keep you up to date on everything, send reminders, and you’re dealing with humans lol. Best thing ever and I would be more than happy to expand on it and share it as another post! 🤗🤗🤗
That is soo Kool the way that works. I may try that. I usually have a $6k insurance deductible and between a CT scan and a colonoscopy, I meet that. Maybe I can stay under that next year?
Please keep us up to date with your"mission to get everything sorted out." It's interesting something disappeared and they can't determine what caused it in the first place.🤔
I may do a post about colonoscopy assist here in the US and also ask if there are such programs in other countries as well. Perhaps you can jump in on that one and expand on your experience. I wonder if I'd get flagged as having insurance and then be ineligible ?
So I haven’t been to see a Dr, because I’m scared, but I know for sure I have hemorrhoids and maybe a fissure. I just noticed when I would drink coffee, it would make me go 2-3 times a day and the bleeding was pretty heavy, so I started taking fiber and stopped the coffee for almost a month, in that month I didn’t bleed at all. I started drinking coffee again but not as much as I would before and my bleeding comes and goes. I just have to stop all together
