Amitriptyline side effects causing Intrusive thoughts

I would be grateful if someone who has had a similar reaction could help. My husband who is 72 was given Amitriptyline to help as he was in pain with Osteoarthritis affecting his neck causing constant headaches, everything was fine for about 6 weeks and then just as the GP was going to issue more he was in a terrible mental state totally agitated and depressed caused by seeing in his mind over and over again a relationship he had at 22 years old where he felt he should have acted differently, this relationship only lasted a year and rarely thought of in all the time of our marriage (40 years) but it’s now quite serious and has been going on for nearly 6 months, he relives throughout the day constantly the images he remembers of the relationship but in a tormented way almost like grieving constantly, he’s now taking Mirtrazapine which helps him to eat and sleep better, GP tried Sertraline which also caused bad effects but nothing removes the images so he keeps working to try to stop it but now can’t relax without it coming back strongly. He is going next week to see a Mental Health Team but if they can’t help I don’t know how much longer he can go on like this. I would be grateful for any advice.

Thank you
