when I was 16 I had my Thyroid removed. I’m on meds for that and was already on Effexor for anxiety. Now I’m 22 and take Effexor and klonopin which I hate having to take for generalized anxiety. Doc wanted to increase it but I won’t. I have a hard time driving and being by myself. I want to try magnesium or ashwaganda but need to make sure it won’t interfere with other meds. One time I took an iron supplement for a week and it stopped the absorption of the klonopin and I was a mess. Help

You may want to speak to your doctor about your concerns. Glad you realize that supplements, even if considered 'all natural ', may interfere with other medications.

Hi, my daughter - now aged 54, had an underactive thyroid, so I know how difficult finding the right medication to help keep the balance of the missing thyroid hormone. Please do not go down any route with medication until you have spoken with your doctor. It may be helpful - I see you are from U S A - to visit a Chinese herbalist and ask for advice - they are usually pretty good. I am from UK, but have travelled much of the world and used this type of herbalist in the past. If they are able to recommend something, don't buy it straight away, get the ingredients - then see your own doctor and compare. Keep us updated, we're here for you. x

I would definitely start by talking to your doctor. First, Effexor is an antidepressant, not an anti-anxiety agent. Second, there must be 15 or 20 alternatives four Klonopin and you may want to discuss with your doctor the idea of switching to a different antianxiety medication.

As a frequently do, I would recommend reading the book Feeling Great by David Burns. It will teach you a great deal about cognitive behavioral therapy and how to use it on your own to deal with your emotional distress. You may also want to consider meditation and mindfulness techniques. It is important that you, as the patient, take an active role in being your own advocate.
