Went to the beach today.. Was a relaxin day.. Sittin on my chair and all of a sudden..BAM.. Get omg I'm anxious.. Thoughts going thru my head ..PANIC .. Thinking I'm getting a soar chest . I'm going to have a heart attack.. I stayed put instead of running home.. I let it pass.. Been her for a couple hours and I'm nice and relaxed.. That's what we all need to do people is let it pass and we will all see it's over as quickly as it comes.. And now I am embracing this relaxation time at the beach!!!! I know we all have it in us to break this terrible demon we all live with.. Let's not let it control us......

I have panic attacks bad like they last forever I also get scared that my heart rate is going to race for too long and cause a heart attack

detour13 in reply to apayett24

Yes I totally understand.. You know in your head that it's only a panic attack.. I tell myself that as well and I still get all worked up over it.. I do my breathing exercises and it does help to slow down my heart rate.. Unfortunately the only thing u can do is let come and then they pass.. It sucks you have for a really long time.. I had one that last a few hours the other night.. But when it passed I felt normal again.. U have to fight them.. They have ruined our life's.. I feel your pain.. And unless you have them.. No one knows what we go thru.. They will get better I promise. They will never completely go away.. We have to live with this demon.. Hang in there.. Find someone to talk or text .. It really helps me out a lot...

You will that a I promise you.. You need therapy.. You will see that they will get less and less,, I stayed home from work for 3 months when I first got them when I was 18.. I am 52 now and I still get them.. But I have learned to cope .. And also will you.. Baby steps..

You have to fight it... don't go backwards.. You need to go out.. Even to this day.. I still can't drive a long distance by myself fearing I will have a panic attack. Go out and stay out more and more everyday.. You have to..

Do you ever get pressure in ur chest and feel like ur heart is racing for hours on end that’s what’s happening right now and my mind keeps telling me I’m going to have a heart attack

Sadiesmile profile image
Sadiesmile in reply to apayett24

I am sorry to hear you are going through that. I experience it too. It helps me sometimes to do something to busy myself and take my mind off of the sensations. It usually helps me. I hope you are feeling better soon.

That’s great sounds like you got some great coping skills. Sometimes we need to accept what our body is doing and not fight against it. When you tense up more it makes you more anxious. You learned how letting go and allowing it to pass was the best thing you could have done. The more you resist the more it persists. I get anxiety out of nowhere all the time for no reason and hope it doesn’t turn into full blown panic attack at times. Great job!

detour13 profile image
detour13 in reply to Survivor4Ever

Omg one night on my way home.. Not stressed at all.. Have not had one for a really long and I get a big one .. I'm like WTF where that come from?? It's crazy the way the mind works.. I try but it still so mentally exhausting.. My problem is I wake up most mornings with a knot in my stomach.. That I can't figure out.. How long you been suffering?

Survivor4Ever profile image
Survivor4Ever in reply to detour13

For many years. It sucks! I could be making my bed or about to get on the road and all of the suddenly it hits me. And it’s like crap.. That’s when I have to tell myself I am not my thoughts I am not my feelings and try to separate the anxiety from me and tell myself or even I said “ So what!! “ out loud saying smelling essential oils even too

detour13 profile image
detour13

Yes that's great .. Keep that up.. I used to have a sticker on my dash board and I would say ' that's my weekend at the beach sticker.. Stress free weekend' and I would look at it and think how I went that whole weekend without any panic attacks and tell myself I can do it again...

Well said:) but don't say you live with the demon. Demon has no place in your body. So glad you are doing well

Sunnidayz1 profile image
Sunnidayz1

Im sorry but it's not a demon. I can understand where you are coming from: wholeheartedly. Our own mind brings these fears in our head. It's not a demon it's our own selves. It's a fear threshold that people, with an anxiety disorder, fight with everyday. If we trained our brain to stay in the analytical part of our brain the panic ends. It's all about prevention when it comes to the brain's adverse reactions to fear.

Knowledge is power.

TheloniousMonkey profile image

Good for you! Be proud of yourself. My wife would say to me “you get an ‘A’ for self-care!” (Sometimes I got an F, but nobody’s perfect.)

I’m also finding some success with not fighting anxiety, I try to look at it as just a part of me, that I can treat with compassion (from Thich Nhat Hanh). And it always passes.

How bad did your panic attacks used to be? I’m really struggling right now :(. My panick attacks increase my heart rate, I feel like I can’t breathe and lose the ability to talk . Sometimes it comes to seizures. I went to the hospital and stayed for an entire week under observation and they couldn’t see a trigger and I went to a psychiatrist. Since these happen once or twice a month, and didn’t mess with my everyday life, he didn’t think I needed to start medication. The worst part of it is that sometimes I don’t know what I’m anxious about and it comes out of nowhere. I don’t trust myself to drive.

For a long time I didn’t know it was a panic attack and have been trying to do my breathing exercises but when they come I feel like I’m suffocating. Any advice?

I’m also on a bento (ativan) which I take 3 times a day. It’s only .5 and it does not make me drowsy. Are you on any benzo?

detour13 profile image
detour13 in reply to Thistooshall

I take lorazapan. .5 every morning.. I don't think it does anything for me anymore.. I still get those panic attacks.. Lately I been on this stupid kick of having a heart attack and what's going to happen to my dog!! Crazy the way our minds work hey!!!

Thistooshall profile image
Thistooshall in reply to detour13

Lorazepam is generic for ativan. Same medication. I used to be on .5 but four months ago when I started working from home I became super anxious and had to take more. I’m still not 100 percent. But I get what you say about our minds. Sometimes they get stuck in a loop and it’s very challenging to change but with time it will happen. We have to be patient. For me, every day is a struggle in spite of being better than four months ago. I think the entire world is suffering very much since the pandemic. Are you on an antidepressant. I’m on lexapro.

detour13 profile image

Sorry to hear.. Well the 1st time I got them I was 18 and didnt leave the house for 3 months.. The last thing I thought of before bed and the 1st thing when I opened my eyes..is Panic attacks .. Therapy really helped me.. It's funny I am a sales manager in charge of used car operations.. I worked in some big stores .. The more work I have the less I think about panic attacks.. The driving OMG I had to learn to drive again.. I could only do a couple exits at a time fearing I was having a panic attack and wanted to run home.. That was my safe zone , home!!! ..( still today I can not drive by myself longer than a 40 min drive fearing I will have a panic attack) I just learned that once it comes let it come, do your breathing exercises , and we all know when its over you feel so much better..

As the seizures it's you body getting to worked up. You need to brace yourself.. Tell yourself ,, " it's a panic attack and it will pass .. It's mind over matter .. Easier said then done, trust me I know... but once you take this mentality you will find they will get easier.. Take a sticker and tape it to you dash board .. I used a smile face . And let sticker remind you of an event or a weekend where you were anxiety free.. And you will smile.. And also remember this affects a lot of people.. I used to feel alone.. I would pull over , get out of my car, walk a few feet and look at people driving by and think to myself .. I bet at least 2 or 3 off those 20 drivers that past me , also suffer from PA...

Survivor4Ever profile image
Survivor4Ever in reply to detour13

Oh yeah I had an experience I needed to get somewhere and was driving on the service road and needed to get on the freeway to get there all of suddenly BAM... I pulled over in a parking lot freaking out I sat there for a second and told my mind to Shut up for about about 2 minutes and that I needed to get somewhere. Somehow it shut up and I got on the freeway and got where I needed to get to

in reply to detour13

Thank you for replying. I’ve been trying to do that lately but it’s still a work in progress. I had two panic attacks yesterday. The first one wasn’t as intense and I was just breathing and let it pass. I was in the middle of cleaning my bathroom and felt it sneak up on me and tried to resist it saying that it was a panic attack and to get over it but it just got worse so I had to lie down and sleep :(.

I guess kind of like you said to just accept it and let it pass.

detour13 profile image
detour13

Good.. Did you feel better after you slept? You have to find things that will work for you.. I understand you just can't sleep if your out in public .. But you can always find a seat and let it pass.. I know it's embarrising if your out with people to tell them what's going on.. But you can say you been having vertigo lately and just need to sit down for a minute.. You have to find things that will make you feel better and let the PA pass and you can continue with you day.. My 1st thing was I wanted to run home ( my safe zone) the more I did that the worst I got.. I was just feeding the beast!!!!

in reply to detour13

Sleeping does help but I don’t think it’s sustainable. I still live with my family since it’s so unpredictable and have to go home and sleep which makes me miss classes etc. I think I just need to sit through it. Last year, it happened while I was in the middle of class and freaked out my classmates and professor. Lucky for me it didn’t last as long and was able to get up and speak in front of my classmates. I used to think this was a physical thing rather than a psychological thing. Now that I know I guess it’s a matter of practice. I’m hoping one day I can live on my own since I’m graduating soon and might need to find a job that could be far away.

detour13 profile image
detour13 in reply to

I recall my 1st attacks happening at grade 8.. I used to get really bad stomach aches .. And then at 18 I got them full out... you will be fine once you learn to cope with them.. Change can be hard and anxious but once you settle in and make your surroundings your own, you will fine, I had huge panic attacks getting married and moving out of my parents place, but you will be find the inner strength. Trust me you will..

in reply to detour13

I just wanted to get back to you so I could thank you. From your OP you were talking about letting the attack happen and pass and it’s been working so far for me. The feeling was coming and all I did was take a deep breath to accept it and it stops progressing. Mentally preparing myself saying ‘ok this is going to happen’ actually slowed my heart rate and therefore calming me down. Again. Thank you 😊❤️

I get really anxious driving a car now. I was in a bad car accident 2 years ago, I luckily didn't get hurt but it totalled the car. I'm sharing my mom's car with her now, and I try to drive but I am just not the same person I was before the accident. Cars pulling out in front of me and making left turns, my nerves are on high alert. Before the damn accident I considered myself to be a good driver, now my confidence is very low. I try to keep practicing driving, but I'm like a spooked horse or something like that. I do a lot of walking and biking to nearby stores. It's just not been easy to recover from what happened.

detour13 profile image
detour13

No it would not be the same.. You need time to get your confidence back.. Think of the positive your getting excersise and helping the environment.. But speaking of horses .. If you fall off you need to get on it.. By having this accident you will be more aware of what's going around you.. You had a tragic thing but your will eventually be back to normal .. Just give it time...

in reply to detour13

I appreciate you saying that. However, it's been over 2 years, I've given it time. And I'm still freaking out sometimes. I'm wondering if I should possibly pay to take drivers training again!!! I'm really serious!!! I happen to live in Michigan and I've really noticed there are more cars on the road than ever. And I live near 2 of the 3 worst intersections in the entire state, I found out from the news on television!!! God, my anxiety ramps up just telling you this. What do you think? I value your opinion. I'm okay when there aren't a lot of other cars around me. I know I have to get back to driving, but I'm too fearful especially with the rush hour traffic.

detour13 profile image
detour13 in reply to

" I'm ok when there are not a lot of cars around me". Think of what you said!!! You don't need driving lessons , you just need your confidence back.. Your still getting behind the wheel and driving.. What I would suggest is take a ride during rush hour .. Go to one of those busy intersections , and do a quick drive there and back around the block.. And when you get home process what you just did !! Yes your going to feel nervous and anxious , tell yourself that's just normal.. And get back to me how that felt... and BTW ,, thanks for the kind words. I'm here to help...

in reply to detour13

Thank you. I don't mean to keep going but, but, however, - this is a big thing I'm dealing with. Maybe I should seek professional therapy again- of course that costs money I don't really have. I just don't know what the answer really is here. Just too much fear to process I guess.

I will for everybody a solution was found for this Panic Attack disorder.. there seems to be a lot of people suffering with Anxiety Attacks. Such Vile experiences.

Yup , it's really not fair.. That's the hand we were delt .. U think they would have one magic pill?? And I look around at other unfortunate people , in wheelchairs and blind or born without an arm or a leg and I think it could be worse.. And then a good looking dude passing me in his Ferrari and think it could sure definitely be better!!! Lol
