Hi there I've just turned 17 and currently undergoing tests to find out wether I have PCOS. I'm still awaiting my third blood test which was testing for prolactin and testosterone but the blood test before thar said I had a high level of LH. And the doctor thinks it's PCOS. I got my period today for the first time in 7 months. I guess I'm just wondering wether or not I could still have PCOS or something else and wether this is normal?
First period in 7 months: Hi there I've... - PCOS UK (Verity)
First period in 7 months
Symptoms can vary but I often went 6 to 12 months between periods. If the testosterone comes back as high, you could be given an ultrasound to confirm pcos. You might want to start taking a contraceptive pill it's better to have regular bleeds. There's lots of information available now, and plenty of things you can do to manage the symptoms. When I was 17 the doctors didn't really care... but things are much better now. Don't stress xx
It could be pcos. It's very normal to have irregular periods with pcos, the longest I waited for a period was 92 days but I can be as regular as 32 days x
Make sure you have 4 periods a year to keep your uterus healthy, this is crucial so dont let them fob you off that you are lucky not to have them!! The combined contraceptive can control the symptoms pretty well (I went on it at 15 and am still on it today age 48 (on and off through that time) and generally my pcos symptoms are kept at bay. It is extremely rare not to conceive with pcos so don't let that niggle away at you if you do want a family in the future. Generally endocrinologists recommend staying on the combined pill until you want a family as when you come off it your body is less pcos so can make conceiving easier too.
There is no normal with pcos, some have no periods, or very rarely, some bleed often so there is no hard and fast rule with us ladies, some have lots of symptoms, some none and actually only find out when they are trying for a family.
Hi Elliss !
I was diagnosed at 13 years old with PCOS - this was in 2010. I went through a range of tests and my testosterone levels came back high , I was then sent for an ultrasound scan to see what was going on. At the ultrasound it was confirmed that I have a number of cysts on both ovaries. Since being diagnosed I've had irregular periods , but all of my problems have come around because of my choice of taking a contraceptive pill. I've tried 2 pills , the 1st one was an oestrogen only pill , this made me bleed heavily and pass large blood clots , not only was I doing that but it also made me feel really dizzy , so in the time I was taking that pill , I didn't leave the house very much. The 2nd pill I took was a combined pill - never again will I take that ! This pill made me feel OK in myself , but I used to hallucinate and it triggered the start of my OCD - I now suffer mentally every day because of this.
Because of my experience , I'll never take a contraceptive pill due to the symptoms I was having , but that's not to say the pill will affect you in the same way it affected me. The last thing I wanna do is put you off contraception as it's very important. But maybe you could try a different form of contraception ? Like the implant/injection ? I personally haven't tried those yet.
From reading your post it does sound like you may be experiencing signs of PCOS but please don't worry about it , millions of us are affected by this and you will continue to receive support if ever you are diagnosed.
Big hugs x
Hey, you should definitely request a scan if your test results are unusual and are experiencing other symptoms. Irregular periods are so annoying but it is great that you are getting it checked out
