Hi there. I have been suffering with extremely painful periods for as long as I remember! I know now that it is because of my PCOS. Can I ask how people manage period pains? I also have a constantly aching back which I am not sure if this is a condition of PCOS or not?

back pain could be related to your period pains.... so I think it could be because of your pcos.... i get backache alot when I start my period. I normally have a hot water bottle or I sometimes put ibrophen gel where i get pain or take paracetamol and ibrophen tablets together.... give them ago see how you get on or if it to much go and see your gp and see if they can give you something.... it's not nice having pcos, I've just been diagnosed with it but I new in my head I've had it for years x

Pain is not a symptom that is associated with PCOS. The cysts caused by PCOS are called follicular or functional cysts eg eggs that have not completed their lifecycle by maturing and releasing or dying off and being absorbed back into the ovary. It is possible that you also experience Ovarian cysts which can cause pain, but they are a separate thing to PCOS.

Regardless of this if you are experiencing consistent disruptive pain then you should keep a symptom diary and speak to your GP to have it investigated further so they can help you treat and/or manage it depending on what it is.

Hi. I had an ultrasound a couple of years ago and they did find that I had cysts in my ovaries. I was under the impression that there was no treatment for these :(

PCOS cysts are one possible symptom of the condition and can come and go. You also don’t have to have the ‘cysts’ to be diagnosed - this is why we have a bad name for our condition.

The condition is actually an endocrine (hormone) disorder so if you work on managing that then you may find that this symptom becomes more manageable. Many do this with diet and lifestyle changes but some use certain medications to manage different symptoms.

Pain however is not a symptom of PCOS so should be investigated and treated accordingly.

I was about 15when I found out. But I suffer with horrible pains as well. I was prescribed mefenamic acid and tranexemic acid, for the pains and to reduce my period. They’ve helped me loads. Ive been on them 2 years ish now and they don’t disappoint.

Hope this helps.

P.s. sorry for the spelling of the medication.
