How old are you

higher ferritin is common after menopause

Updated reference ranges for top of ferritin range depending upon age

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

Thank you for your incredible patience while you have been awaiting the outcome of our ferritin reference range review. We conducted this with Inuvi lab, which has now changed the reference ranges to the following:

Females 18 ≤ age < 40. 30 to 180

Females 40 ≤ age < 50. 30 to 207

Females 50 ≤ age < 60. 30 to 264l

Females Age ≥ 60. 30 to 332

Males 18 ≤ age < 40 30 to 442

Males Age ≥ 40 30 to 518

The lower limits of 30 are by the NICE threshold of <30 for iron deficiency. Our review of Medichecks data has determined the upper limits. This retrospective study used a large dataset of blood test results from 25,425 healthy participants aged 18 to 97 over seven years. This is the most extensive study on ferritin reference ranges, and we hope to achieve journal publication so that these ranges can be applied more widely.

Hi slowDragon thanks for replying I'm 68 I take better you spray with vitamin k 3 sprays but no magnesium also b complex you recommended what magnesium would you recommend please

SlowDragon profile image
SlowDragonAdministrator in reply tomollyjo

Loads of different magnesium options

Calm vitality magnesium powder cheap and easy to use. Good if you suffer constipation as can help

Thorne magnesium citramate - large capsules - doesn’t affect bowel

can tip capsule out into cup of water

Any magnesium at least 4 hours away from Levothyroxine

Thanks. My recent blood test shows ferritin at 320ng/mL and has been flagged as outside range. However I'm female aged 85 so that explains it.

Vit D 63 50-250

how much vitamin D are you taking

GP will often only prescribe to bring vitamin D levels to 50nmol.

Some areas will prescribe to bring levels to 75nmol or even 80nmol

leedsformulary.nhs.uk/docs/...

GP should advise on self supplementing if over 50nmol, but under 75nmol (but they rarely do)

mm.wirral.nhs.uk/document_u...

But with Hashimoto’s, improving to around 80nmol or 100nmol by self supplementing may be better

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/218...

vitamindsociety.org/pdf/Vit...

Once you Improve level, very likely you will need on going maintenance dose to keep it there.

Test twice yearly when supplementing

Can test via NHS private testing service

Test done Monday morning 7.45am fasting

Was last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

How much levothyroxine are you taking

Do you always get same brand levothyroxine at each test

Free T4 (fT4) 17.4 pmol/L (12 - 22) 54.0%

Free T3 (fT3) 3.8 pmol/L (3.1 - 6.8) 18.9%

Shows you are not on high enough dose levothyroxine

Also poor conversion of Ft4 to Ft3

Request 25mcg dose increase in levothyroxine

Retest again in 2-3 months

If Ft3 remains low after this

Here’s link for how to request Thyroid U.K.list of private Doctors emailed to you, but within the email a link to download list of recommended thyroid specialist endocrinologists who will prescribe T3

Ideally choose an endocrinologist to see privately initially and who also does NHS consultations

I am not on any medication GP only tests TSH he insists I do not have a thyroid problem despite my symptoms, but has lectured me about trust between a doctor and patient and offered to send me to see a counceller. I take vitamins as recommended here.

Recommend getting ultrasound scan of thyroid

Privately if GP won’t

mollyjo profile image
mollyjo in reply toSlowDragon

Good morning GP examined for nodules and goiter said nothing there but I feel my neck does look swollen sometimes that's when I have most symptoms which I tried to explain, but because TSH is in range he insists it's not thyroid ! I was hoping my blood test would show signs of thyroid disease so I could go back to GP and show him. Do my results show anything at all I don't take any medication only the vitamins. My sister had graves disease she had RAI now 15 years later on thyroxine.

SlowDragon profile image
SlowDragonAdministrator in reply tomollyjo

You haven’t had an ultrasound scan done though?

Results show TSH is good, no thyroid antibodies, but Ft3 is on lower side

Improve vitamin D

Retest thyroid again in 2-3 months

mollyjo profile image
mollyjo in reply toSlowDragon

No ultra sound I think my GP thinks I'm neurotic he offered to send me to see a counceller but ignores my symptoms he said all my blood tests are normal except ferritin which he sent me for scan for. I have started on a flare up every evening I have hot flashes up my back lower back pain I feel niggley pain adrenal area and in bed my legs are hot and I'm hot, legs in and out of bed I feel it's my thyroid pumping ferritin out(I read about this if you have high ferritin and high inflammation your more than likely have overactive thyroid which i printed out and showed GP who stated your TSH is normal 🤷. Unless I can show him proof with a private blood test he won't budge it's the third GP in practice I have tried.

Your thyroid isn’t over active,

if anything it’s slightly struggling…..with low Ft3 your adrenals are working hard to compensate for low thyroid hormone levels

You can get ultrasound privately

So would I be hypothyroid do you think? Any idea why I would get metallic taste it would wake me in the middle of the night really strong to me that seems hormonal. Thanks for your help

Hi there, here’s a post I did when researching Magnesium if helpful in your own search for an option:

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

I will also say that I have been given advice (for my daughter) on this forum to improve some vitamins and then wait and test thyroid again in 6-8 weeks. My daughters numbers were far worse than yours, and yet still I was told to wait… (which is so hard, but absolutely the right decision)

Your thyroid numbers “look” normal to me too. T3 a little low, but great TSH and FT4!

Also, your thyroid never would pump ferritin out, further, you have no inflammation.

I won’t speculate as to what it might be, but regards to thyroid in a rare instance I agree with your doctors for the time being. Just a layman opinion : )

mollyjo profile image
mollyjo in reply toFallingInReverse

Thanks for advice. I have had this for 2 and half years I have been back and forth to GP for all this time I did have inflammation then 26 0-20 and ferritin was 330 20-200 hense for liver scan. I lost over a stone in weight in 6 weeks and had several symptoms of thyroid including red palm of hands, jitters untorelable to heat which IV still got those symptoms., plus I have now put 2 stone on and cholesterol has risen despite good diet.I now see ferritin has had its range changed since then, and I'm sorry but I have read that the thyroid can pump out ferritin and that if the thyroid is treated it, the ferritin will stop being produced.

FallingInReverse profile image
FallingInReverse in reply tomollyjo

I hear you. And appreciate the response knowing I’m just asking questions and sharing my experience.

Our health is like a puzzle isn’t it!

I think the interesting thing is that the symptoms you note for thyroid are more typically aligned to an overactive thyroid. But your bloods are not leaning in any way towards overactive. It’s just not what one typically sees, but that’s why we hang around this forum! For the eagle eyes of smart people who can see things our doctors can’t : )

Also - I would love to see the info you have on the thyroid pumping out ferritin. Probably semantics, as of course thyroid and ferritin are linked, but I’m always looking to understand more about iron/ferritin.

Can you share, I’d love to read up on it!

I will try but I'm not very technical I have had help off Charleyfarley I think before about replying to posts. We don't have an I pad at the moment it's faulty so would have to use my phone. My daughter would be able to help but she is very busy at the moment at work and is going away half term. I'll try and find info to send you a link if I can. And thank you for your help.

No problem! If you come across it, great otherwise no worries at all!

Good luck sorting everything out, I hope the forum can help : )

Are you using HRT? Also, high ferritin has symptoms. What about donating blood?

mollyjo profile image
mollyjo in reply togabkad

I don't use HRT the GP said I'm to old at 68 he also said high ferritin does not have any symptoms, but I think it does. I get back ache and heat travelling all up my back it's like an attack I get heat, backache, adrenal niggle red palms feeling unbearably hot sometimes it wakes me at 2 in the morning and sometimes I don't have it for a few days. Iv never donated blood I think I'm to old to start.

gabkad profile image
gabkad

There are women who do start HRT later. I've been reading up on the subject recently. The Guardian had three articles on menopause in the past three days. You could see a gynecologist who deals with menopausal issues and prescribes hormones and not rely on a GP. Recently I attended an appointment with a ob/gyn who had no problem whatsoever in prescribing testosterone. I've been on HRT for a long long time.

My ferritin was over range a number of years ago and I got it down by donating blood. It pops up but I stick with a low iron diet so it stays around 100. I looked it up how much ferritin goes down per each donation but I can't remember now. There is information on line.

I live in Canada. There is no age limit but I see that there is in the UK which is kind of stupid. If someone is healthy, there shouldn't be agism. Makes no sense. Ask your GP if blood can be removed and thrown out then. They do this with hemochromatosis when the ferritin is way over range.

mollyjo in reply togabkad

It's difficult to discuss anything with GP's I'm hoping sooner or later something shows up. Thank you for your help and everyone on here

Looks like your T3 can do with climbing up a bit. I know some specialist like tsh >1 anything above that can signal the body requires more T3. My T3 is at 5.1 and I feel a bit rough so I can't imagine how you're feeling 😞.

What negative symptoms are you experiencing?

mollyjo profile image
mollyjo in reply toMrthyroid

Hi I have had symptoms for months I seem ok few days then it starts hot sensation up back lower back pain(which I feel is from the high ferritin)red palms niggly adrenal, heat intolerance but sometimes I'm freezing and tired, other days I'm ok🤷 IV put weight on and cholesterol has risen despite good diet. I had a sensativity test which showed unbalanced niacin and t3 that's why I had blood test was hoping it showed something so I could go to GP with it. GP only tests TSH which he says is in range 1.31 in February and is normal he can't diagnose me with anything as bloods all good he says.
