Looking for peer reviewed studies about vitamins and Thyroid

There's a lot of talk on this forum about the importance of Vitamin B, Ferritin, Selenium and others in combating thyroid disease. Before I ask my Endo to test for the levels of vitamins in my blood, I'd like to be able to substantiate these claims with some research. He typically tests for TSH, T3, T4, Vitamin D, Calcium, Potassium and a lot of other things - the significance of which, I do not know. A cursory google search yielded a website of a "doctor" who talked of the important link between Vitamin B and T4, T3 conversion. But he has dubious credential (a chiropractor who sells products and consultations). I'd really like to see some solid studies. I'm not saying that if there haven't been studies - that there's no link - but telling my doctor I read about it on a forum is not very compelling.

Not sure how or if there's a way to edit a post. Just an FYI - my problem lately is T4, T3 conversion.

PubMed is where you can find almost everything!

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/

The search mechanism is pretty powerful but can take a while to understand.

To edit a post you have written, click on 'More ' on the same line as 'Reply' and you will get options to Edit or Delete or Copy reply link (not sure what that does!).

Copy reply link allows you to get a link (URL) which goes to the precise reply - not just to the thread you are on, or the link you used to get there.

Very helpful when you want to direct someone to a specific reply on a very long thread.

Such as:

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

Where it has added ?responses=148077131 to the basic link to the post - and that identifies your reply. (I know you won't see this extra bit in blue in this reply. But when you click on it, or hover over it, you should see.)

Great research, thanks. 😎

Wow - thanks for doing all this! I haven't dug in yet - but most most of these articles are about Thyroid disorders such as Hashimoto's (ie. people who still have a thyroid). I wonder if the same things apply just to someone taking thyroid replacement after thyroidectomy.

I think they probably would be relevant. Having too little thyroid hormone for any reason is likely to affect nutrients.

I think you're probably right.

I should point out that I'm not making any promises about the quality of these papers... But hopefully at least some of them will be useful.

important when you test TSH ....

researchgate.net/publicatio...

According to the current TSH reference interval, hypothyroidism was not diagnosed in about 50% of the cases in the afternoon.”

“Further analysis demonstrated inadequate compensation of hypothyroidism, which was defined in 45.5% of the morning samples and in 9% of the afternoon samples”

If delaying taking levothyroxine until after blood test, you likely want to not eat or drink anything apart from water before taking levothyroxine

It may (or may not) make a difference to TSH if fasting ….opinions differ

Iron, ferritin and thyroid

An article that explains why Low ferritin and low thyroid levels are often linked

Great in-depth article on low ferritin

This is interesting because I have noticed that many patients with Hashimoto’s disease and hypothyroidism, start to feel worse when their ferritin drops below 80 and usually there is hair loss when it drops below 50.

Thyroid disease is as much about optimising vitamins as thyroid hormones

Never supplement iron without doing full iron panel test for anaemia first and retest 3-4 times a year if self supplementing. It’s possible to have low ferritin but high iron

Thanks for this very thorough reply! I will print some of these articles out and arm myself with them when I talk to my endo on my next visit. I have to say, it is odd that I feel perfectly fine with high TSH. Had it not been for the tests, I'd have no idea there was anything wrong.
