B12 and iron results. Can anyone read and suggest good/affordable supplements?

Hi guys,

Had my bloods done and Thyroid panel is good (dr works with me on t3 results. Im on naturthroid). My vit D has increased and I have seen a difference in energy and mood for sure. I still have fatigue easily and can have some days with joint/ muscle aches. Can anyone help with the results. I think I just need a bit of tweaking! :)

Meds:

3 grains Nature Thyroid a day

10,000 iu Vit D a day

200g x Magnesium Glycinate a day

100mg K2 a day

Results:

Thyroglobulin antibodies: 67.7 (<20)

Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies: 1294 (0-60)

TSH: <0.05 (0.50-4.40)

FT4: 11.5 (10-20

FT3: 4.5 (3.5-6.5)

25 OH vit D: 104 (50-125)

Ferritin: 92 (6.9-282.5)

Serum Iron: 16.5 (9-30.4)

Transferrin: 2.5 (1.8-3.82)

Transferrin Saturation (calc): 26 (15-45)

TIBC (calculated): 63 (42-80)

vit b12: 623 (200-1100)

serum folate: 11.1 (3-14)

calcium: 2.29 (2.1-2.55)

magnesium: 0.79 (0.66-1.07)

Im not sure if I should first raise my vit d and magnesium a bit more before going on to b12 and iron supplements. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

What is affordable? If you mean cheap then the quality wont be there, there will be lots of fillers and maybe not the correct form of active ingredients. Quality comes at a price but you haven't given an indication of what is affordable for you.

25 OH vit D: 104 (50-125) 10,000 iu Vit D a day

If that is nmol/L (and not ng/ml) then as the Vit D Council, the Vit D Society and Grassroots Health all recommend a level of 100-150nmol/L, I would reduce your dose to 5000iu daily and retest in a couple of months.

As you have Hashi's, for best absorption you need an oral spray eg BetterYou. It is more expensive than softgels, but you should really use the oral spray. BetterYou comes in 3000iu sprays so you'd have to do 6000iu a day for 6 days a week for a couple of months.

100mg K2 a day You can get BetterYou combined D3/K2 spray. Otherwise go for something like Healthy Origins K2-MK7 softgels, excellent quality, no unnecessary ingredients, contains extra virgin olive oil to aid absorption.

magnesium: 0.79 (0.66-1.07) Easy, reasonably priced at 22p per serving at recommended dose with Natural Calm Original magnesium citrate powder with Amazon's cheapest seller amazon.co.uk/Natural-Vitali... If you don't need the citrate form to help bowels, I can't suggest anything as that's the one I use.

B12 doesn't need much help, I would take a good B Complex containing a decent amount of methylcobalamin. Have a look at Igennus Super B amazon.co.uk/Super-B-Comple...

Ferritin: 92 (6.9-282.5) Eating liver/liver pate/black pudding/iron rich foods will all help raise ferritin rather than taking a supplement. Liver is cheap. You're looking at half way through range to be optimal.

I would reduce your dose to 5000iu daily and retest in a couple of months.

If you have 10,000 iU dose Vitamin D supplements to use up, you could take 10,000 iU three times a week until you've used them up.

Im not looking to reduce my vit D. I'm not sure why we're going down that path?

humanbean in reply to KornishPiskie

I was responding to SeasideSusie's comment about your vitamin D. If you are already in the optimal range then taking 10,000 iU per day might keep on raising it.

At some point you are going to have to decide when your level is high enough and find the maintenance dose you need to keep it optimal, rather than allowing it to keep rising or allowing it to fall.

if you're happy with the way things are at the moment, then you shouldn't change anything. But do test your vitamin D every so often to make sure it isn't rising to toxic levels.

I wanted advice on B12 and Iron. I only included the other information to give a whole picture. I'm following a vit d protocol and keep a close eye on myself, as we all do.

Members tend to include the results they want comment on, not much point in including them if you don't.

well, I find that when I don't include people start to ask about them. So it's easier to put it up in the original or you end up posting them up anyway.

Hi humanbean,

Have a look at the link from vit D council vitamindcouncil.org/about-v...

I'm fine. I feel fine. I don't display any toxicity signs and the amount Im taking is fine too. I would always retest anyway (normally every 6 months).

I was deficient in Vit D (34 before I started supplementing). My mood and energy levels are better and anxiety reduced. So definitely happy where I am :)

Sorry Susie but I'm happy with my Vit D where it is. As Im in the range recommended by the Vit D council this is not an issue. I already take doctors best vit D, solaray magnesium and betteryou K2.

Yes I know you're within the range, but continue with 10,000iu daily and you'll be over range before very long and on the way to toxicity level. You're looking to move to a maintenance dose now.

I have followed the protocol from the Vitamin D deficiency UK group. If I drop my vit d dose my vit d will go down and toxicity is very rare

From what they are saying I'm fine as I am.

Hi can I ask what your T3 was when he decided to work on it? Thanks

Hi, when I started on NDT and luckily found a gp who has a good understanding of the thyroid! She treats me and my research with respect which is great.

It certainly seems like you have done your homework with the labs you had done and the supplements you take. Good job! Now your vitamin D is too high. You should back off of it totally for a couple of months, then resume with 5000 ius per day. Vitamin D should be around 50-60 to be within optimal range. You also need more Magnesium immediately. High dose vitamin D steals magnesium from everywhere in the body, so you will be deficient in Mag. I recommend taking 200 mg two to three x a day. Magnesium has a very short half-life, and leaves the body quickly. Anything not used by the body will be excreted in the urine, so no need to worry about overdosing. The Mag lab you had was serum Mag level. You want the RBC Magnesium, as it is much more accurate. You should be in the range of 6-6.5 to be optimal. The serum lab is highly inaccurate, as the blood will steal Mag throughout the body/organs (especially the heart) to make the blood have enough magnesium. Mag deficiency in the heart will lead eventually to arrhythmias (I know...I've been there, and it was caused by too much Vitamin D, so I switched to cod liver oil everyday instead of vitamin D supplementation). You can raise your B12 simply by consuming nutritional yeast. It has all the B vitamins within it, and B vitamins are better absorbed by taking them together. Your iron level is fine. You want to keep your ferritin below 100. No iron supplementation needed. That is a beaten horse by too many doctors. Just make sure you get some red meat once to twice per week, grass-fed, liver, etc. I am a nurse, and a board-certified holistic practitioner. Keep up the good work!

This is a link to Vitamin D supplementation and toxicity. Definitely worth a read. From what they're saying I am fine. You can probably tell from my thoroughness that I keep a close eye on myself for any changes in my health.

I was actually looking at engevita's nutritional yeast as I was thinking the same as you. I don't need much supplementation from the looks of my levels.

Dr. Mercola says about 50-60. Here is a link to the magnesium portion: drcarolyndean.com/2018/03/o...

Sorry, I forgot about the mag part. I can only tolerate 200mg of glycinate so have ordered some mag citrate (I know it's not the best but I just have to try a different form and see how I go with it).

different forms of magnesium do different things. Citrate will help with sleep, so take that one at night.
