VitD3 and medications that can reduce thyroid hormone absorption...

Houston Thyroid and Endocrine state vitD3 can significantly reduce absorption of thyroid hormone and advise taking it 4 hours away from thyroxine as advised with calcium and iron.

These are medications that reduce the absorption of thyroid hormone in the gastrointestinal system significantly. These medications/foods lead to erratic thyroid hormone levels in the blood. Generally they should not be taken within four hours of taking thyroid medication. It is strongly advised that you speak to your physician before changing medication frequency or dosages.

–Colestipol hydrochloride

–Sucralfate

–Ferrous sulfate

–Calcium Carbonate tablets (milk and dairy and almond milk are fine)

–Foods (soybean formula, walnuts, prunes)

–Aluminum hydroxide

–Cholestyramine

–Sodium polystyrene sulfonate

–Laxatives

–Orlistat (Alli)

- Vitamin D3

- Proton pump inhibitors for heart burn

Hope my sublingual D3 spray bypasses this problem then. Dr Midgely was talking yesterday about the 3 transport proteins inc TBG...

but if you're tested to need VitD please don't forget to take it - I was just reading some old news...

That's an interesting article, Spare. Scary about the epigenetics :o

It's not a problem to find a 4 hr window for vitD3 but I may have to forgo late night snacks of mixed nuts and dried fruit :(

perhaps they might invite Oliver Gillie to speak at the next conference :D

Aha! Always had a feeling nuts weren't good for me. Thanks. Now I have the best reason for avoiding them.

Gabkad, no let off, they're very good for you as long as you eat them four hours away from thyroxine and that doesn't mean you nibble thyroxine all day to avoid nuts ;)

Since when is selective information not useful? ;)

Thanks for putting this info on, I take my pills an hour before breakfast, it often includes walnuts in my muesli, and follow on with supplements that includes D3, so could explain my bad days. I had no idea it would affect my levels.

Fennel, came as a surprise to me too. I've always allowed 2 hours between food, supplements and thyroid replacement but will have to stretch it for some now.

This was linked in one of the comments in that article Spare posted up above: Dr. Grimes. Very interesting in regards to Vitamin D receptors, osteomalacia and crohn's disease (not in that order). The Crohn's stuff starts at 12 minutes. He says he gets 50% resolution with 20,000 IU D3 per week.

Weird eh? How did people survive?

Interesting about that woman who ate fish imported from Bangladesh 3 times per day and how it kept her vitamin D levels good.......I guess she ate the whole fish, liver and all....

They avoided guidelines, sun screen & TV/computers (there weren't any!)

Which ever way you need it, flower. Those 'Bad' sun lamps, dried fish and all (Dr Mercola) J x

No wonder people feel so good when they lie under those sunlamps. And this doctor didn't even tell the guy to stop.... over here it's a no no. I think unHealth Canada just wants everyone to need prescription drugs.

Crikey, I'm just eating my seed and nit back breakfast while eating this. Maybe that's why I'm taking more NDT than expected.

Does this apply if you take NDT sublingually?

I don't know, Hypopotamus, but I'd probably allow a four hour gap just in case.

Interesting - thanks Clutter. I had no idea prunes were to be avoided around thyroid meds too. I always have a glass of prune juice with my breakfast (helps the chronic constipation). Will have to change things around a bit.
